"Thor is the New Superman" S

This column really captures the essential differences between the Marvel and DC movies.

Thor is fun, the way Superman should be; his cape is a bright, hopeful red and you want to hang out with him. The Superman in Man of Steel is a guy you want to keep your distance from, more coldly alien than the Asgardian who just arrived here. They're both immigrants to Earth, but even though the Man of Steel Superman was raised here, Thor feels more connected to humans in his movies, more their champion. More their Superman.

The tagline for the tumblr Fandom: Like Fine Wine is "Best left alone in the dark for a few years," which seems very apt. If you've ever tried in vain to explain something to your non-fannish friend/co-worker/parent/significant other and wished you had a visual aid, this is for you!

Everything is covered. Including the aforementioned "explaining fandom" experience. It's hard to pick favorites, but I'll go with the one that always makes me laugh:

"Penis captivus" is a real condition, and it sounds awful S

Can a penis really get stuck in a vagina? According to BBC Health Check, the answer is, unfortunately, yes. Like penile fracture, "penis captivus" (as the condition is known) is one of those things you desperately wish was a myth, but is surprisingly, frighteningly, disconcertingly real.

Dr. John Dean, Clinical Director of Gender and Sexual Medicine for Devon Partnership NHS Trust in southwest England, describes the physiological mechanism by which penis captivus can "certainly happen" in an interview with the BBC:

What... is likely to happen is that when the penis is within the vagina it becomes increasingly engorged. The muscles of the woman's pelvic floor contract rhythmically at orgasm... While those muscles contract, the penis becomes stuck and further engorged within [the vagina] until the muscles relax, blood can flow out... the penis... the penis starts to go down after orgasm and the man can withdraw. And whilst – I think the fascination is with the prospect of a couple struggling to separate themselves for many minutes, what actually happens is that they may find themselves in difficulty disengaging for maybe a few seconds – five seconds, ten seconds, and if you're in that situation that probably seems like an eternity rather than just five or ten seconds. Certainly I have heard this in my own practice, where it happens just for a few seconds.

Jim Benton used two things to make this two-panel comic work: a twist on the "expected" outcome of this situation and the fact that "It's me you want" has two meanings. It's simple and pitch perfect.

This remarkable sequence of images was photographed last month by photographer LeRoy Zimmerman. The images were captured last month over the (surprisingly long) course of thirty minutes, and depict roughly 500 kilometers of aurora unfurling across a 150-degree vertical stretch of subarctic firmament. Sez Zimmerman: "I have never seen an active aurora stay in one place for so long, ever!"

Top sequence featured by kind permission of LeRoy Zimmerman

Zimmerman describes capturing the display over at The World At Night:

It was a stunning and quick evening. It would have been very easy to miss this show if my timing getting out was off by just 15 minutes or so. Saw some aurora showing some pink on my LiveAurora iPhone app, so I decided I better get out and take a look. Luckily here is a shooting spot about 5 minutes from my cabin that I could get to quickly, and when I got there I saw an somewhat 'faint' band coming up from the western horizon and thinly spreading overhead. I took a color grab shot out to the horizon (just a quickie hand held shot to check color) and saw that faint band was really pink/red.

I immediately set up and started shooting out towards the horizon and noticed that is was starting to build and move overhead. Took the camera off the tripod (quick release) and took another color grab shot overhead, and saw that was red as well. I immediately pointed the camera straight up on the tripod and started shooting. And the aurora started putting on an overhead show!! So just kept shooting, and shooting, and shooting. Kept thinking it surely had to start winding down, or that the aurora band would move to another part of the sky, but the band did NOT move and the show did not stop, it just stayed in place and kept changing and changing. So I kept shooting the same aurora for 25 minutes, taking a photo every 3 seconds, before it finally quieted down and began to fade away. I have never seen an active aurora stay in one place for so long, ever! And that single arc was the ONLY aurora in the sky! Took 500 shots without ever moving the camera once! I could not believe what I had just seen and filmed! A priceless evening for sure.

Simply stunning. I've never had the good fortune to witness the Northern Lights in person, but it's images like these that invariably stoke the flames of my extreme-latitude wanderlust. A big thanks to LeRoy for allowing us to feature his work.

At first glance, this heap of black fibers kind of reminded me of the iron filings we used to play with back in primary school, so it was with unguarded curiosity that I found myself watching Vine user paglo prod at the mass with his finger. Nothing could prepare me for what happened next. Just watch.

In short: he unleashed a nightmare horde of long-legged arachnids. My best guess on an ID is something from the order Opiliones (commonly known as Harvestment, or "Daddy Long Legs"), which means they're not actually spiders. As for the grouping behavior, an entry on Opiliones at Henderson State University has this to say:

Harvestmen often will aggregate into groups in which the legs seem to be twined together and the bodies close to each other. When disturbed, a single harvestman typically pushes its body up and down in a slow, vibrating motion. The large groups will perform the same behavior if disturbed, so the pulsating mass of harvestmen may be an even greater deterrent to potential predators.

The caption on paglo's Vine translates to: "Super living public hair of Bravo Valley," but we're pretty sure público is an auto-correction of púbico, which actually would make the caption "Super living pubic hair of Bravo Valley." This makes more sense, if you think about it, which you really shouldn't if you happen to enjoy restful sleep. Glutton for punishment? Here's more:

You know what sounds difficult? Castrating an unwilling two-ton animal. You know what sounds more difficult? Castrating an unwilling two-ton animal that can hide its testes inside its body, "where they can shift around and even retract away from a vet's grasping forceps during surgery."p

The ability to stash and reposition one's testicles is among the many enviable skills of the hippopotamus. According to ScienceNEWS' Lizzie Wade, it's an ability that has bedeviled zoo veterinarians (who regularly castrate hippos "in hopes of controlling the size of captive populations and reducing the number of fights between the males of this aggressive species") for close to 100 years. Now, a team of vets working in Europe and Israel have published an in-depth, "nearly foolproof" method for hippo castration in the latest issue of Theriogenology that uses sonogram and careful massage to overcome what they characterize as the "spatially dynamic nature of the common hippopotamus testis." Helpfully, they have included illustrations (see above). Wade has a good lay-description over at ScienceNEWS. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Teen Assassin Hailee Steinfeld's Toughest Mission: High School

This is shaping up to be the year of the lethal teenage girl, what with Vampire Academy and the third Hunger Games movie. And now add to that list Barely Lethal, a comedy in which True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld is an assassin trying to be a normal high-school girl.

Entertainment Weekly has your first images of this film from director Kyle Newman (Fanboys). Steinfeld plays a teen who was trained as a government agent by Samuel L. Jackson, who is probably more or less playing Nick Fury with slightly more hair and two eyes. She decides to drop out of being a super-agent and go to high school. Her former handler and current nemesis, played by Jessica Alba, wants to get her back — so she recruits another teen spy played by Sophie Turner (Sansa from Game of Thrones) to infiltrate the high school.

Says Newman, "She treats high school like a mission... Her briefing is Teen Vogue, Seventeen, and everything from Mean Girls to Clueless."

Check out another still from Barely Lethal, which comes out sometime this fall.

The animated Marvel film Big Hero 6 gets a new director

Big Hero 6, the manga-inspired animated movie set in the Marvel universe, is due to come out this November — but they're still tinkering with it, apparently. Chris Williams, co-director of Bolt, has come on board as co-director, and they've added a new producer, Ray Conli (Tangled).

This is probably nothing to freak out about — Disney's Frozen similarly added a new co-director, Jennifer Lee, just a year before the film came out. Williams is supplementing Big Hero 6's original director Don Hall, who previously directed 2011's Winnie the Pooh movie. Both Williams and Hall have a string of writing credits on animated movies — they both have story credits on Brother Bear and The Emperor's New Groove, for example.

It sounds as though Conli might be replacing Big Hero 6's original producer, Kristina Reed.

Big Hero 6 is based on a six-issue miniseries of the same name, written by X-Men scribe Chris Claremont and drawn by David Nakayama and Terry Pallot. In the movie version, robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada saves the city of San Fransokyo from a criminal scheme with the help of a robot named Baymax, plus four other heroes: "Gogo, Honey Lemon, sushi chef Wasabi and fanboy Fred."

The early designs for San Fransokyo look gorgeous, but you can also see why this might be a difficult concept to bring to life on the big screen, and why they might need some more pairs of hands to make it work. Here's the original concept trailer:

Behold the absolute mind-f*ckery of a knuckleball in flight

MLB pitcher R.A. Dickey* slings an erratic knuckleball pitch, posing a challenge for batter and catcher alike. The ball has been colorized to highlight its almost total lack of spin, which usually serves to stabilize the ball's trajectory.

A baseball's seams make it an imperfect sphere, which can lead to some screwy flight behavior when there's no spin to steady things out. Ivan R. Dee provides a good explanation of knuckleball dynamics in chapter 1 of The Knucklebook:

In the action of the knuckleball... some stitches are moving toward the flow of air in the front, and others are moving away, at a slow speed. The stitches move around the ball in quire a complex curve on a knuckleball, and the ball may rotate at different rates in different ways. This causes the swirls of air to change size and direction, form and disappear, and move location on the ball, thus producing changing locations of low pressure that really can't be predicted. The wake behind a single knuckleball at various points in flight may look like this:

Behold the absolute mind-f*ckery of a knuckleball in flight S

Last year, Reuters made a video deconstructing the knuckleball with the help of University of Illinois physics professor Alan Nathan, who studies the dynamics of the little-used pitching technique:

Celebrating Ten Years on Mars with NASA's Spirit Rover S

Friday, Jan. 3, marked the 10th anniversary since the safe landing of NASA's renowned Spirit rover on the plains of Mars on Jan. 3, 2004.

Spirit comprises one half of NASA's now legendary pair of Mars Exploration Rovers (MER). Opportunity, her twin sister landed, on the opposite side of the Red Planet three weeks later – on Jan. 24, 2004. The goal was to "follow the water" as a potential enabler for past Martian microbes if they ever existed.

Together, the long-lived, golf cart sized robots proved that early Mars was warm and wet, billions of years ago – a key finding in the search for habitats conducive to life beyond Earth.

Exactly a decade ago, the famous robot survived the scorching atmospheric heating of the 6 minute plunge through the thin Martian atmosphere, bounced some two dozen times cocooned inside cushioning airbags, and gradually rolled to a stop inside 100 mile wide Gusev Crater. It was known as the "6 minutes of Terror".

The three petaled landing pad opened and Spirit was dramatically born in a milestone event that will be forever remembered in the annuls of history because of the groundbreaking scientific discoveries that ensued and the unbelievable longevity of the twins.

Before they were launched atop Delta II rockets in the summer of 2003 from Cape Canaveral, the dynamic, solar powered robo duo were expected to last a mere three months – with a 'warranty' of 90 Martian days (Sols).

Either dust accumulation on the life giving solar panels, an engineering issue or the extremely harsh Martian environment was expected to somehow terminate them mercilessly.

In reality, both robots enormously exceeded expectations and accumulated a vast bonus time of exploration and discovery in numerous extended mission phases.

Celebrating Ten Years on Mars with NASA's Spirit Rover S

This beautiful scene reveals a tremendous amount of detail in Spirit's surroundings at a place called "Winter Haven," where the rover spent many months parked on a north-facing slope in order to keep its solar panels pointed toward the sun for the winter. During this time, it captured several images to create this high resolution panorama. During that time, while the rover spent the daylight hours conducting as much scientific research as possible, science team members assigned informal names to rock outcrops, boulders, and patches of soil commemorating exploration sites in Antarctica and the southernmost islands of South America. Antarctic bases are places where researchers, like the rovers on Mars, hunker down for the winter in subzero temperatures. During the past Martian winter, Spirit endured temperatures lower than minus 100 degrees Celsius (minus 148 degrees Fahrenheit). Credit: NASA/JPL/Cornell

No one foresaw that Martian winds would occasionally clean the solar panels to give them a new lease on life or that the components would miraculously continue functioning.

Spirit endured the utterly extreme Red Planet climate for more than six years.

Opportunity is still roving Mars today, and doing so in rather good condition!

Altogether, Spirit drove 4.8 miles (7.73 kilometers),that's about 12 times more than the original goal set for the mission.

She transmitted over 124,000 images.

After landing in the dusty plains, she headed for the nearby Columbia Hills some 2 miles away and ultimately became the first Martian mountaineer, when she scaled Husband Hill and found evidence for the flow of liquid water at the Hillary outcrop.

Celebrating Ten Years on Mars with NASA's Spirit Rover S

Spirit acquired this mosaic on Sol 1202 (May 21, 2007), while investigating the area east of the elevated plateau known as "Home Plate" in the "Columbia Hills." The mosaic shows an area of disturbed soil, nicknamed "Gertrude Weise" by scientists, made by Spirit's stuck right front wheel. The trench exposed a patch of nearly pure silica, with the composition of opal. It could have come from either a hot-spring environment or an environment called a fumarole, in which acidic, volcanic steam rises through cracks. Either way, its formation involved water, and on Earth, both of these types of settings teem with microbial life. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Cornell

The rovers were not designed to climb hills. But eventually she scaled 30 degree inclines.

The rover was equipped with a rock grinder named the Rock Abrasion Tool (RAT) built by Honeybee Robotics.

Spirit ground the surfaces off 15 rock targets and scoured 92 targets with a brush to prepare the targets for inspection with spectrometers and a microscopic imager, according to NASA.

Eventually she drove back down the hill and made even greater scientific discoveries in the area known as 'Home Plate'.

Spirit survived three harsh Martian winters and only succumbed to the Antarctic-like temperatures when she unexpectedly became mired in an unseen sand trap driving beside an ancient volcanic feature named 'Home Plate' that prevented the solar arrays from generating life giving power to safeguard critical electronic and computer components.

In 2007, Spirit made one of the key discoveries of the mission at 'Home Plate' when her stuck right front wheel churned up a trench of bright Martian soil that exposed a patch of nearly pure silica, which was formed in a watery hot spring or volcanic environment.

Spirit was heading towards another pair of volcanic objects named 'von Braun' and 'Goddard' and came within just a few hundred feet when she died in the sand trap.

Celebrating Ten Years on Mars with NASA's Spirit Rover S

Spirit's last panorama from Gusev Crater was taken during February 2010 before her death from extremely low temperatures during her 4th Martian winter. Spirit was just 500 feet from her next science target – dubbed Von Braun – at center, with Columbia Hills as backdrop. Mosaic Credit: Marco Di Lorenzo/ Kenneth Kremer/ NASA/JPL/Cornell University. Mosaic featured on Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) on 30 May 2011 – http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110530....

Here's how the rovers' principal investigator, Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., described some of the key findings in a NASA statement, starting with what Spirit found after driving from the crater floor where it landed into the Columbia hills to the east:

"In the Columbia Hills, we discovered compelling evidence of an ancient Mars that was a hot, wet, violent place, with volcanic explosions, hydrothermal activity, steam vents — nothing like Mars today.

"At Opportunity's landing site, we found evidence of an early Mars that had acidic groundwater that sometimes reached the surface and evaporated away, leaving salts behind. It was an environment with liquid water, but very different from the environment that Spirit told us about.

"When Opportunity got to the rim of Endeavour Crater, we began a whole new mission. We found gypsum veins and a rich concentration of clay minerals. The clay minerals tell us about water chemistry that was neutral, instead of acidic — more favorable for microbial life, if any ever began on Mars."

"Because of the rovers' longevity, we essentially got four different landing sites for the price of two."

Celebrating Ten Years on Mars with NASA's Spirit Rover S

Meanwhile, NASA's new Curiosity rover just celebrated 500 Sols on Mars and is speeding towards Mount Sharp from inside Gale Crater – which is about the same size as Gusev crater.

And a pair of newly launched orbiters are streaking to the Red Planet; NASA's MAVEN and India's MOM.

And China's new Yutu lunar rover and Chang'e-3 lander are napping through the lunar night until mid-January.

Dracula tangles with dancing lunatics and diabolical lesbians

Sure, "dancing lunatics and diabolical lesbians" sounds exciting, but if you've been watching NBC's Dracula, you know that this is a pretty chill Friday night for the titular vampire.

So Van Helsing has got his "let Dracula stay in the sun" machine working pretty well — so well, in fact, that Dracula declares he's not going to drink people's blood anymore. Van Helsing points out this is a horrible idea, but Dracula is determined to be human, to defeat the curse the Order of the Dragon placed on him. Most of all, he wants to hang out with Mina in the park and take a walk in the sun, where she complains about how listless all the lunatics in her father's insane asylum are. Grayson suggests she hold a dance to liven their spirits. Mina loves the idea, and asks to borrow Grayson's phonograph for the occasion. Of course he says yes, and starts devising a way to turn this into building sexual good will.

Harker, on the other hand, isn't faring so well with Grayson. After learning the bookkeeper who told him Captain Shaw was a war profiteer was a mere actress, Harker announces his mistake to Grayson and wants to fix it. Grayson declines, and Harker pieces together that Grayson was behind the plot — but it can never be proven. Harker is less than pleased, but is still willing to send out invites to the Grayson Geomagnetic Electricity shindig that evening, where Grayson will debut (for the second time, I guess?) his magic free electricity generator.

Meanwhile, Lucy is heartbroken about Mina rebuffing her girl-on-girl action advances, and Lady Jane consoles her. Mina is the bitch for turning her down and not being a lesbian, Lady Jane says, and the distraught Lucy accepts this tenuous logic. Jane tells her to steal Harker away from Mina to hurt her like she hurt Lucy, which, sure. Later, Lucy helps Harker get his suit for the wedding, and takes on the onerous task of measuring Harker's inseam with care and presumably a little ball-cupping.

Also meanwhile, Dracula/Grayson sends Xaro Xhaon Renfield to Budapest to buy the Dresden Triptych, where Renfield outbids the winner by about a zillion dollars, accounting for inflation. Unfortunately, Renfield then immediately abandons the Triptych in his hotel room, where it is easily stolen by agents of Lord Davenport, who opens the triptych to reveal… several paintings of Dracula's wife from the 1400s, a.k.a. Jessica De Gouw, a.k.a The Huntress, a.k.a. Mina Murray. "THAT BITCH GONNA DIE" Davenport shrieks (I may be paraphrasing), still reeling from his son's suicide.

When the hour of Mina's Dance of the Lunatics arrives, she's shocked/delighted to discover Grayson has replaced his phonogram with a full orchestra, and even grabs an first inmate for the first dance. This is weird on about 90 different levels, as Dracula and Mina dance with a variety of smiling madmen as if it's all the most normal, pleasant thing in the world. Alas, Dracula's hunger is getting to him, and he has to leave the dance. Mina follows him, and, buoyed by Grayson's generosity and kindness, as well as the fact that Harker didn't manage to show up even after he promised to, she grabs Grayson and begins the Victorian equivalent of dirty dancing (it's basically a waltz, but with orgiastic expression on both dancers' faces). Dracula loves it until the hunger kicks in again, and he starts fantasizing about turning Mina's neck into a Big Gulp, but he barely manages to tear himself away from her and flees.

Which is probably for the best, because his big crazy free electricity event has already started, and I say I say "already started" I mean "it's been shut down by the police for being a danger by making local people sick, even though the people are sick because the Order of the Dragon hired the local police captain to poison a milkman's delivery tank which made everyone start bazooka-barfing." The police burst in and force everyone out before it even starts; Dracula only arrives as the crowd is dispersing, and is understandably upset.

Oh, the reason Harker didn't make it to the Headbanger's Ball is because he was kidnapped by the Order of the Dragon, who want to recruit him, because even if Grayson isn't Dracula, Grayson's crazy hippie free electricity business needs to be stopped. With all the other members In shadow, Patrick from Coupling announces that the Order is in a holy war, and the Ottomans are sitting on the world's largest pool of the 20th century's greatest resource, oil. Harker points out that if the Order is worried about energy, isn't Grayson's free electricity stuff a good thing? Patrick from Coupling mutters something about Grayson's tech being fake, and Harker more or less has no reason not to join up, especially after the Shaw incident.

The episode ends with Grayson/Dracula going out of his way to kill the police captain's driver, grab his uniform, sit on his coach with his coat perfectly set as to hide his face in shadows, wait until the police captain gets in his carriage, and then pull the dude out and drinks him. He wanders back into his domicile, covered in blood. "You're the monster," he hisses at Van Helsing, "for giving me hope I could be human. And one day I will kill you for that." I'm paraphrasing again, but I'm pretty close. And after what is admittedly a pretty low-key episode for Dracula, it's pretty powerful stuff. Will Dracula actually face off against Van Helsing in this? Is Dracula even evil? How in god's name will this insanity end? Tune in next week, same Dracula-time, some Dracula-channel.

Dracula tangles with dancing lunatics and diabolical lesbians

Assorted Musings:

  • So I understand Lady Jane messing with Lucy when she thought Lucy was into Mina and Mina was into Harker and Harker was serving Grayson who might be a vampire. But after a vigorous fucking in the sun, Lady Jane's suspicions have been sated (cough). So what the hell is she doing by fucking with Lucy? Other than being a dick?

  • Xaro Xhaon Renfield paying $1 million for the Dresden Tryptich and this storing it behind his hotel dresser was easily the stupidest thing that has ever happened in Dracula.

  • To the best of my knowledge, the Dresden Triptych does not contain any pictures of Jessica De Gouw in them.

  • I would have given much to read the thought balloon of the old tailor whom Lucy forced to sit down so she could measure Harker's inseam. He just looked so unconcerned. "Yep, that lady sure wants to cop a feel. Kids these days! Whaddya gonna do?"

What do you get when you load a SuperSoaker with boiling water and fire it into the beyond-frigid air of Northern Ontario? Cloudhappy funtime, that's what.

Writes YouTuber chrisgsauce:

Woke up to a balmy -41C [Ed. note: that's -41.8°F, for reference] this morning in South Porcupine, ON. Thought I'd share what happens when you mix boiling water and a water gun and take it outside for a few shots.

Fun to watch online, but we're guessing not-so-fun to witness firsthand. It's as cold in Canada right now as it is on Mars (or, at least, certain regions of Mars.) The thought of Fahrenheit and Celsius agreeing with one another just terrifies us. No thank you.

Grimm breaks all its own rules and is so much better for it S

My biggest problem with Grimm has always been how formulaic it is. But the excellent "Red Menace" managed to shake things up without actually shaking things up, and is my new vote for best episode of the season.

Let me explain. In another world, this could have been an easy Wesen-o'-the-Week installment. Wesen shows up in the cold open, does something weird, someone dies. Nick and Hank show up and Wu describes exactly what the viewers saw in the cold open, in detail, although not everything so that Nick and Hank have stuff to do to eventually catch up. Nick and Hank are baffled until a second victim appears and they finally believe a Wesen might be responsible. They confer with Munroe and/or Rosalee, there's some padding, Nick fights the Wesen, the end.

But "Red Menace" starts with Nick, doing his best Barry Allen impression in the park, but not sweating thanks to his new undead Grimm powers. It's a small, simple change, but it sets the tone for the rest of this unique episode. Then the Wesen appears — but he's healing someone. The Russians (there's a big Russian population in Portland in reality, so good on Grimm for bringing some of the city's personality to the show) have a big-ass party to celebrate their healer Boris, Boris flirts with the young ladies ostentatiously in front of his wife, and when he heads to the bathroom a waiter tries to kill him. Except Boris grabs the dude and throws him out the window instead.

Nick and Hank are called to the scene… because a body has been found. But not the dude's! It's the waiter the dude killed and stuffed in the freezer so he could get close enough to try to assassinate Boris! Thanks to the restaurant's eerily comprehensive security footage, Nick et. al realize the dude killed the waiter, put on his uniform, and then attacked Boris. So the initial murder — which didn't even happen onscreen — and was actually a human killed by another human — is solved instantly.

But the PPB are curious about Boris tossing a dude who tried to murder him out a window, and then immediately returning to the party like nothing happened. Nick, Hank and Renard (who speaks Russian, because Renard is boss) find Boris, and Nick sees the healer's magical healing powers in action and the green glow they emit (no one else can). Nick tells Renard, and Renard instantly knows it's a Koschei. Wesen solved! No 10 minutes of playing "Guess the Wesen" with Munroe! Now, Nick still needs to do research, so he and Munroe head to the trailer, but since Grimm has gotten the Wesen out of the way so quickly, we can actually get some Grimm history — specifically that Rasputin was a Koschei, and the British government coincidentally hired a Grimm to assassinate the mad monk (why the British ordered Rasputin's death is best left a mystery). But this is infinitely cooler and more fun than Grimm's normal m.o., which is taking five minutes for Munroe to find and then list the characteristics of a Wesen that we, the audience, have already seen for ourselves.

Only now does the mysterious Wesen-caused murder victim appear! As it turns out, the Koschei can harm people as well as heal them, and by harm I mean "pump full of horrible radiation." They find the faux-waiter-turned-assassin dude in a hotel tub, basically looking like a plague victim (lots of pus-filled boils. The yellow tinged bathwater he's been soaking in is a nice/horrible touch). But then this guy pops up and hugs Hank! He's not even dead! So the dude gets sent to the hospital while Nick, Hank and Wu take a group shower and get decontaminated. It's a weird but completely welcome non-sequitur, and gives this episode even more personality.

Again, instead of slowly uncovering clues about what's going, Renard calls a buddy in Russia and figures out the deal — Boris the Koschei used to be a freelance assassin who killed a lot of people, and thus likely had a lot of enemies. When questioned, Boris says he's become a healer to make up for his past, although he still knows he's going to hell — it's the first Wesen-o'-the-week I think I've ever seen that's not painted as completely good or evil. Since every time Boris heals someone he hurts himself, and is near death anyways, he's accepted all of this.

The plague dude had a phone on him with one number on it; Hank calls it only to find it's disconnected. "Looks like his partner isn't an idiot," Hank announces, and I swear to god I almost cheered. When plague dude awakes, he whispers something about a "her" to Renard, who deduces (deduces!) that the dude's accomplice is very possibly in the house with Boris.

Indeed she is, and, despite the show trying to make you think that Boris' wife Olga wants her husband dead (see below) it's really the sexy Russian maid he's been banging on the side. See, this is the sister of the waiter/assassin dude, and Boris killed their dad back in the day. With her brother dead, she has nothing to lose, so she poisons a bottle of vodka, makes Boris drink all of it, and then freaks out when he doesn't die (Koschei can heal themselves, making them difficult to kill, a la Rasputin). This is when Nick and Renard burst in.

Boris is poisoned, the Russian maid is freaked, Nick and Renard wave their guns about confusedly, and Boris' wife Olga pops and in turns into what is basically a saber-toothed tiger Wesen (called a Malin Fatal) and tears the maid's throat out. But Boris, poisoned, crawls to her and uses the last of his lifeforce to heal the sexy maid. Maybe he'll go to heaven after all.

See, this episode wasn't flashy, it didn't have a ton of mythology, but by changing up the infinitely overused formula, this is definitely my favorite episode of the season. I don't know who was willing to shake Grimm out of its normal routine or why, but it was most welcome, sir or madam.

Assorted Musings:

  • One more thing: There was a B-story, involving Juliette… that looks like it's going to be the main plot of next week's episode. I can't tell you how excited I am about this. Grimm almost exclusively sticks to 1) single episode stories or 2) stories that stretch over half or an entire season, so this thing about Juliette's friend Ali — who is a Wesen, because of course she is — running away from her abusive husband is a small enough part of this episode that I'll actually be kind of interesting if it becomes the major story next week. It's simple but effective! Admittedly, watching Juliette kick the shit out of the abusive husband/Wesen in the "On next week's episode" clip didn't hurt.

  • There was still some bullshit that didn't really matter: Hank hitting on his physical therapist Zuri; Renard finally confronting Adalind in Austria and saying the same vague/portentous crap about the Royal Family and "shifting allegiances" he always does.

  • Seriously, at one point Renard is actually going to explain what the fuck is happening with the royal family, what they're trying to do, what these allegiances are actually all about, and how Adalind's half (or quarter)-royal baby will figure into all this shit specifically, and Grimm will instantly become twice as good.

  • So was anyone else confused about the plague guy calling someone to say he failed to kill Boris, and then the hard cut to Boris' wife Olga? Was this an actual feint on Grimm's part? Because there are literally no clues that indicate Olga isn't part of the plot until the show ends and she just isn't.

  • Renard holding the maid's gushing throat was ridiculous. "I don't think she's going to make it!" he yells, as five gallons of blood spray from her neck-hole like a garden hose attachment.

Bug-eating is a great idea and we should all be doing more of it S

Entomophagy – the practice of consuming bugs – is one of the greatest ideas humans ever stole from other animals. Insects, after all, are an abundant, nutrient rich resource. We used to eat them all the time (close to 30% of the world's population still does*) – so why do so many of us regard them as disgusting?

In this newly released TED-Ed video, narrated by Addison Anderson, educator Emma Bryce joins forces with animators at NEIGHBOR to urge all of us to eat more bugs. Why wait for the post-apocalypse when entomophagy holds so much promise for food security and environmental stability RIGHT NOW?

*This percentage is even higher if you count food additives.
