"My Friend woke up to this thing fighting his dogs." YIKES.

Redditor treemonkey18 posted this image with the simple quote: "My Friend woke up to this thing fighting his dogs (Yes i'm from Australia)." Welp. Looks like we're going to need to burn down Australia.

A few commenters are suggesting that this might be a very large Black Flying Fox, or that it's possibly fake. Either way it's got a bit of that POV camera angle thing going on so it might not be THAT huge, but it's still freaking huge. And now it's time to find the two dogs because it probably turned them into vampires.

This stunning animal looks like a glitch in reality's programming

It belongs to the genus Sapphirina, and its skin – which can flicker from brilliant blue to near-invisible in an instant – is something you truly need to see to believe.

Deep Sea News' Rebecca Helm calls it "the most beautiful animal you've never seen." The tiny marine crustaceans have shimmering, crystalline skin that derives its iridescence from a single layer of microscopic, hexagonal plates that reflect only certain wavelengths of light. Helm – who's been been lucky enough to encounter one in its natural environment – has more details on the animal she calls a "sea sapphire":

In the case of blue sea sapphires, these crystal layers are separated by only about four ten thousandths of a millimeter; about the same distance as a wavelength of blue light. When blue light bounces off these crystal layers, it is perfectly preserved and reflected. But for other colors of light, these small differences in distance interfere, causing the colors to cancel out. So while white light is composed of all colors, only blue light is reflected back. This type of coloration is known as structural coloration, and though resembling a gem in hue, a sea sapphire's color has more in common with an oil sheen than a pigmented jewel. Combine this nifty trick with the sea sapphire's impressively transparent body, and you have an animal as radiant as a star in one moment, and invisible in the next.

Seth Rogen's Congressional Alzheimer's Testimony Is Goddamn Delightful onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Seth Rogen's Congressional Alzheimer's Testimony Is Goddamn Delightful

Yesterday, Seth Rogen testified before a Senate subcommittee, pleading for more awareness of and support for Alzheimer's research. It was — like most things Rogen does — endearing as hell. But unlike the characters Rogen typically plays, it was also brave, altruistic, and kind of badass.

Rogen says during the testimony that before Alzheimer's affected him personally, he didn't really think about it. But that all changed when his then-girlfriend, actress Lauren Miller (she's now his wife; they've been together for 9 years which is so adorable) told him that her mother, in her mid-50's, was suffering from early onset Alzheimer's. The pair founded a charity that aims to raise awareness and reduce stigma of the disease, and now, here he is, just a regular old guy who looks like he doesn't know how to iron shirts charming the pants off of Senators with jokes about House of Cards and Taco Bell. What a country.

In fact, I found Rogen's testimony so compelling — passionate yet accessible, welcoming rather than alienating — that I started imagining him running for public office. Imagine Seth Rogen delivering a weekly Presidential address.

My fellow Americans: Um, hey guys. I... (fumbles with notes)... I can't believe I'm here today addressing the 30% of the country who actually voted for me. I had no idea I had that many relatives and people who owe me money. (takes drink of water during laugh break) As you can tell, this country's a little fucked up. And I don't know if I'm the guy to fix it, but I'm going to try. Or I'm going to blame my Vice President, who we all know is plotting something. Come on. A guy with ties that perfect has to be a cyborg. (shifts in seat, glances down shyly) Anyway. Keep on keepin' on, and thanks for being so cool to me.

But Rogen didn't stop with producing six of the most entertaining minutes about a debilitating brain disease ever aired on C-SPAN; today, he began shaming Senators who skipped his hearing, remarking on Twitter and on CNN that poor attendance from subcommittee members indicated that Alzheimer's research and support was a low priority. Only two Senators attended.

The labels on the back of your food are about to get an update. The big change? Making serving sizes that reflect how people actually eat.

A nutritional label that shows the serving sizes we're really eating S

The new label proposed today by the FDA has a couple new features on it: the print for the calorie counts and serving sizes is larger, nutrient totals are easier to find, and there's a new line item for any additional sugars that have been added.

But the biggest change by far is that no longer will a single-serving bottle of soda or a tiny bags of chips be divided up into multiple servings on the label — instead, single-serving sizes will get single-serving nutritional labels and larger sizes will also have portion sizes closer to the ones people tend to eat.

For reference, above is an FDA infographic of how serving sizes have changed over the years and what the new serving sizes would look like. And here's what the new label would look like, and what changes we would see:

So, do you find the new label and the more realistic serving sizes useful? Tell us what you think in the comments now!

Our heroes continue to get their werewolf asses kicked on Bitten

Question: What sucks worse — being a werewolf on Bitten, because you have no other powers than to occasionally turn into a slightly-larger-than-normal wolf, or being a member of the Danvers pack, since you are completely incapable of dealing with any kind of conflict?

(First off, a quick note: These Bitten recaps are going to get super-brief, but I didn't want them to disappear entirely... but they still might.)

So it turns out Santos is also involved in the Mutt uprising, making all his earlier plotting both incomprehensible and irritating. Santos et. al set up the world's most obvious ambush for the Danvers family, and thanks to the Pack's basic ineptitude, a bit of cellphone interference, and a guy with a knife, Antonio is killed and and Jeremy is wounded. Note: If you're a werewolf and can be taken out by a guy with a switchblade, you're kind of a shitty werewolf.

Meanwhile, everything in Toronto is horrible, all the people are horrible, and Logan inexplicably refuses to come home despite the fact his family is being continually murdered. These scenes are death incarnate. In fact, I'd put the acting in the scene with Elena's Dull Boyfriend and his Hacker Whiz Ex-Girlfriend to be The Room-level godawful. If Bitten cut this shit out and went down to 30 minutes, it would be a mercy.

Jeremy and the Pack decide now this time the Mutts have really gone to far, and this time they'll really get what's coming to them, like they've said pretty much every episode since #3, which results in Elena and Clay capturing Zachary Cain (played by Noah Danby, who is best known as Sukar the Klingon Space Jesus on Defiance, and the only non-Danvers character who can act). It's quite the retribution. Oh, and Jeremy is poisoned, which will give everybody more time to not deal with the conflict the audience is actually interested in. Grr.

This indie documentary follows Iceland's Phallological Museum's quest to get the final jewel of their collection: a human penis. And from what we're hearing, everyone loves this movie.

The Final Member is one museum curator's search for a human penis specimen for the only Phallological Museum on the planet. What starts off as a simple donation spirals into the strange when an American donor tries to cut the line to become the first. Here's the official premise:

Thirty miles from the Arctic Circle, in the northern Icelandic town of Husavik, stands the Icelandic Phallological Museum - the world's only Penis museum. Over 40 years, the founder and curator has collected every specimen from every mammal except for one elusive penis needed to complete his collection: The Human Specimen. The film follows the curator's incredible, sublimely comic, often shocking quest to complete his eccentric collection, and the two intrepid men who have raised their hands to be the first human donor.

Online critics are calling this short "side-splittingly funny" and "honestly amazing." So color us intrigued. The Final Member will be released in theaters and on VOD April 18th.

Walking Dead's Norman Reedus to star as an apocalyptic janitor in Air S

Everyone's favorite Walking Dead character is getting his own personal apocalypse movie. Set in an underground facility isolated from the destroyed future Earth, Norman Reedus is the caretaker for the only survivors left on the planet, who all happen to be frozen.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Djimon Hounsou and Reedus will be starring in the movie titled Air, which is also produced by Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. Christian Cantamessa (who co-wrote the script with Chris Pasetto) will make his directorial debut on this film. Here's the premise (it's kind of wacky):

The story is set in an underground cryogenic facility after a nuclear fall-out renders the atmosphere unbreathable. Air centers on its two custodial workers (Reedus, Hounsou) who take care of the cryogenically sleeping personnel that are to re-establish society but they struggle to preserve their own sanity and lives while maintaining the extremely fragile environment of the last livable place on earth.

Honestly, more Reedus is like more pizza — always good. So we're down. Fingers crossed for our boy Daryl and his wonderful poncho of many colors.

Who knew Benedict Cumberbatch was a master of the Peter Jackson mutter? In a wonderfully detailed interview, Smaug himself gives us an inside look at the slightly ridiculous art of playing a dragon.

The first of this series of "conversations" was hosted by Benedict Cumberbatch. The actor spoke at length about his stage work, going method for Khan, recreating real characters (including another response to Julian Assange's "hired gun" emails) and on his Otter likeness.

Thanks toThe Hollywood Reporter and BAFTA the entire conversation is now available, and it's absolutely worth a watch.

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Japan's insane Marvel Super Heroes anime/disk game is hilariously awful

We've told you about Marvel Super Heroes: Disk Wars, the anime series and about its Pokémon-esque, accompanying collectible disk game, that it's basically just a commercial for. But did you know the game itself is basically pogs?

Bandai has released this promo for the anime along with instructions on how the game, called Bachicombat, works, and hoo boy. Here's how Anime News Network explained it:

To start a game of Bachicombat, each player assembles one to three Smash DISKs and sets up four Defense DISKs on his or her side of the playing field. After deciding who should attack first, the battle starts. Player 1 chooses one of the Smash DISKs, calls out the DISK's character ("Smash with Iron Man's Tech Lv. 2!! D-Smash!!"), and throws down the DISK against Player 2's Defense DISKs.

The objective of the game is to flip the other player's Defense DISKs. It is hard to flip a Defense DISK by striking its center, so the video advices players to aim for the corners. A player loses a DISK if it is flipped over. A player wins if his or her opponent has no more DISKs.

Literally the only differences between Bachicombat and pogs are that you don't stack Bachicombat disks before you start slamming them, and the discs are engineered to flip a bit easier than if they were just cardboard.

So it's clear that Marvel Super Heroes: Disk Wars is for little kids, but I don't know — I have a hard time imagining that even four-year-olds in this day and age are going to be too excited about playing a game whose pieces look like they weren't good enough to be the prize in a box of cereal.

Computer models show how Tatooine-like planets with two suns form S

Over the past several years, astronomers have discovered a number of planets within so-called circumbinary systems, including Kepler-34(AB)b — a planet reminiscent of Star Wars' Tatooine. Now, using computer models, scientists have finally figured out how these planets can form in such gravitationally hostile environments.

Planetary formation in a single-star system is a relatively straight forward process. After a new sun flickers to life, its gravitationally bound debris forms into an accretion disc, which in turn coagulates into various celestial objects, like terrestrial planets and gas giants.

Computer models show how Tatooine-like planets with two suns form

But binary systems are much more complicated. When you've got two stars, powerful gravitational disturbances create destructive collisions that grind down the planetary building blocks. In this environment, impact velocities increase, as do orbital crossings, resulting in frequent high-energy collisions that thwart the growth of aspiring planets. Consequently, the standard accretion disc model fails to explain how planets form in binary star systems.

But by using a computer model, and focusing solely on the Kepler-34 system, Zoe Leinhardt and colleagues were able to calculate the effect of gravity and physical conditions on and between about a million simulated planetary building blocks. The models showed that planetary formation in a circumbinary system is indeed possible — but the planets have to form far away from the central binary stars (about a distance of 1.5 AU) and then migrate inwards towards their current location.

"Our simulations show that the circumbinary disk is a hostile environment even for large, gravitationally strong objects," noted Leinhardt in a statement. "Taking into account data on collisions as well as the physical growth rate of planets, we found that Kepler 34(AB)b would have struggled to grow where we find it now."

Looking at Kepler-34 specifically, it seems likely that all currently known circumbinary planets also drifted significantly inwards from their formation locations (with the possible exception of Kepler-47 (AB)c which is further away from its two parent stars than any other examples).

"Circumbinary planets have captured the imagination of many science-fiction writers and film-makers — our research shows just how remarkable such planets are," said lead researchers Stefan Lines. "Understanding more about where they form will assist future exoplanet discovery missions in the hunt for earth-like planets in binary star systems."

Read the entire study at Astrophysical Letters: "Forming circumbinary planets: N-body simulations of Kepler-34."

'A Disturbing Gift For Fans Of Adventure Games.' S

Anger can destroy you. It can make a bad situation worse. But last fall, Agustín Cordes and a group of other people took their anger, their hurt and their frustration and did something with it: they teamed up to make a video game.

The video game they made is called Serena. It just came out, and it's free on PC.

Ostensibly, Serena is an adventure game about a man in a log cabin who is struggling to remember his missing wife.

The real story is that Serena is the game that Cordes and a far-flung group of fellow adventure game creators and fans created together—in just a handful of weeks—in order to deal with upheaval in the adventure game community. That a scene of people had been hoping for a revival of a once-glorious gaming genre thanks to a slew of successful adventure game Kickstarters, including the one that made this whole Kickstarter thing a big deal. They began to fear that in-fighting might mar that comeback.

The drama centered on the entrepreneur Paul Trowe, a long-time adventure game fan himself whose Replay Games helped bring the Leisure Suit Larry back after a successful half-million-dollar 2012 Kickstarter and who has supported other adventure game comebacks.

Trowe is far from the most genteel online raconteur and angered many adventure game fans when, Cordes and others say, he began to criticize others in the scene, airing grievances about a Kickstarter here or a former business partner there. Call him a troll, rude or maybe simply a concerned adventure game fan and gamemaker with a blunt way of expressing his qualms about various upstart adventure game revivals; he hurt feelings in a scene of gamers abuzz with the optimism of a comeback. His style of online sparring climaxed in November when, in an exchange on Twitter, Trowe identified Serena Nelson, a former Larry volunteer who had been critical of Trowe, as being transsexual. She acknowledged that this hadn't been a secret to everyone but was still furious, as were many friends and peers who considered it an outing. Later, Trowe publicly apologized to Nelson, expressing regret. (Trowe declined to comment for this article.)

The damage had been done. Nelson, through her advocacy for numerous adventure game Kickstarters, had come to be known as the "Hero of the Adventure Game Revival Movement." For Cordes and others, Trowe's words and the debate around them were painful.

Cordes: "My reasoning was 'OK, let's do something together to counterbalance such awfulness.'"

Cordes says he was a bystander to all of this. It upset him. "I saw many people hurt by Trowe and [sensed] a general feeling of discomfort in the adventure game community," he told me over e-mail. "The genre was enjoying a much-needed revival, with successful Kickstarters, lots of excitement, positive feelings, and yet Trowe was somehow ruining all that with his vitriol and bullying."

Cordes said it wasn't personal. "I never had dealings with Trowe, I haven't been wronged by him in any way," he said. "I just really felt that something had to be done. My reasoning was 'OK, let's do something together to counterbalance such awfulness.'"

The "something" that Cordes decided to do was to make Serena, the game. And, yes, the game is named after Serena Nelson.

Serena (the game) doesn't feature Serena Nelson or Paul Trowe or go into any of what happened last year. Players won't be aware of any of last year's drama. They'll simply get to play what is intended to be a positive reaction to a negative situation. That response is an adventure game that lasts about an hour and helps Cordes himself get back into the adventure-game making.

Like adventure games themselves, Cordes had been keeping a low profile for a while, priming himself for a comeback. His previous adventure game was a well-received horror adventure called Scratches. It came out in 2006. Four years later, he announced Asylum, a game he and his team at Senscape aren't quite done with yet. (They will be done this year, he maintains.)

Asylum uses a new game engine called Dagon that Cordes wanted to release to everyone, open source. Cordes also wanted to eventually release a tutorial for the engine in the form of a short game. He figured he'd get to that eventually, after finishing Asylum. He had a rough idea about what it would be: an Edgar-Allen-Poe-style short story of a game. He had a name for it: Helena. "I needed a name that evoked mystery and haunting memories," he recalled.

He had these ideas, but he was going to wait. Asylum, first.

Then came last fall's drama. And then came an idea. Cordes decided that the best thing to do to cheer the community up would be to rally people in the adventure gaming scene to do something positive. He invited them to work with him on Helena, to put that game on the front burner. He decided to change the game's name. Helena became Serena.

"Not only is 'Serena' a much better name," Cordes said, "But it also represents a lot: a nod to the real Serena, a wonderful friend and staunch supporter of adventure games, who in turn has brought many fans of the adventure genre together."

Mandel: "Agustín's 'Serena' project was, to my mind, simply the greatest gesture any game designer could make towards a fan."

On December 2, Cordes crafted a design document for the Serena game. He started reaching out to people who had stuck up for Serena Nelson. Cordes is based in Argentina, but he aimed to make this game a global effort. "I created a Dropbox folder, a private forum, and began inviting people to work on the game," he said. "At first we were four people, basically the writers, and all very close friends with Serena. Little by little, someone else was brought on board: someone who would do programming, another one who would contribute with hand-painted art, a musician, and so on."

Some contributed their names as authors on the game's bookshelf. They could give their books any title, Cordes said, so long as they weren't attacks on Trowe or anyone else.

'A Disturbing Gift For Fans Of Adventure Games.' S

Cordes managed to recruit more than 40 people to contribute to the project. That includes ex-volunteers from the Leisure Suit Larry remake project. It includes Scott Murphy, co-creator of the Space Quest series and New York-based independent game developer Josh Mandel, who, among other things, originally voiced King Graham in the King's Quest series. Mandel used to work with Trowe as part of Replay but left last year some time after the Larry revival came out.

"It haunts me that a project that began with such good intentions could end up so ugly by the end, and create so much negativity," Mandel wrote to me in an e-mail. "Agustín's 'Serena' project was, to my mind, simply the greatest gesture any game designer could make towards a fan, and so I wanted to support those efforts in any way I possibly could." He referred to the Serena game as "the most enormous love-and-condolences note in adventure gaming history."

Nelson: "In the end I feel that the positives far outshine the negativity surrounding what happened."

Serena Nelson herself didn't know about the game until a few weeks ago. Cordes wanted it to be somewhat of a surprise. She's given him the okay to use her name and likeness in the game and, recently, she played it. "I couldn't be happier with how it all turned out," she told me. "I hope that everyone who plays the game leaves as satisfied as I have."

Nelson says the incidents of last fall "really hit me hard. But it was the friendship and love that I got from friends and others in the community that helped me to pull through. I believe that there's always a silver lining in even the darkest of clouds, and in the end I feel that the positives far outshine the negativity surrounding what happened."

So what exactly is Serena? It's a short adventure game. It takes about an hour to play. It's free. And it's got a surprise, so, mostly, mum's the word. Most obviously, it's a first-person point-and-click game about a man who is trying to figure out why he can't remember much about his wife. He's in the log cabin that he used to share with Serena, his wife. There are various accoutrements of their lives for him to check out, one mouse click at a time.

'A Disturbing Gift For Fans Of Adventure Games.' S

Serena is essentially a one-room game, though its one room is designed to be clicked on a lot. Click on the bed or the hairbrush or the rug multiple times and you'll hear different things from the husband, whose 500-some lines are all voiced by Mandel. Play further along, have the story advance and click on those things and you'll hear even more about those objects. The narrator's thoughts have changed. Cordes hopes that feels like a breakthrough.

"This is something that always bothered me in adventures, how feedback feels so 'static,'" Cordes said.

"You click on one item, you get one response, and that's it. Click again and the response is repeated. This breaks immersion and hurts the storytelling, so what we did for Serena is create a huge deal of feedback and thoughts for the protagonist—every item has its own stream of thoughts, nearly a whole separate story about the relationship. As the game evolves, these stories also evolve and become more grim and sad. They're complemented by the more general thoughts ('unrequested feedback' as I like to call them) that do not depend on actions by players."

Cordes promises a similar approach with the much grander Asylum, which he is back to focusing on.

Cordes doesn't want people to get the wrong idea about Serena. The game may have come from a trauma to the adventure game community, but he insists it's not about that. He doesn't want people to see it as an attack on anyone but, rather, as a "happier conclusion."

He understands that it might even seem a bit odd to make a creepy little game as a tribute to a community that already had some dark clouds over it. But he thinks it works. "I have a twisted sense of humor," he said, "So I love seeing this as a disturbing gift for fans of adventure games."

'A Disturbing Gift For Fans Of Adventure Games.' S

Ultimately, Serena is unusual in that, even if it isn't an attack, it's a reaction. It's hard to think of many other games that are forged from the fires of events in one autumn that are already finished and playable the following winter.

Cordes and his team have used their chosen medium as a way to respond to a personal situation, a path only possible thanks to the increased ease of disaggregated web-connected game development these days. What's more is that a game can be used not just to react, he's proven, but to respond.

"I can't stress enough how powerful games can be," Cordes says, "especially as vehicles to tell interactive stories that challenge you like no other medium does. Ultimately, our statement with Serena is 'we stand united'—also, 'we really love adventure games and its community, and we can't wait to collaborate on another project again.'"

Serena is available now, for zero dollars, on Steam for Windows, Mac and Linux. It also will be open sourced shortly after release.

How Nintendo Plans on Tackling Its Toughest Year S

Last night was the night that Nintendo told investors—and the world—how they're going to meet the challenges they're facing.

People have been talking about Nintendo a lot lately, mostly because of worse-than-expected Wii U sales and a lackluster mobile phone presence. In an investor meeting last night, company president Satoru Iwata outlined the vision for Nintendo's hardware and services moving forward. Some of his statements confirms elements of rumors from the past few weeks, while another part of his remarks offer up some surprises.

Putting Nintendo Stuff on Smartphones

How Nintendo Plans on Tackling Its Toughest Year

Getting 'Mario on the App Store' has been pitched ad nauseam as a panacea for what ails modern-day Nintendo. That's not going to happen, Iwata said. But what will happen is that they'll be making apps for mobile devices, with the aim of pulling users of those devices into Nintendo's ecosytem. Iwata's words, with emphasis added:

Therefore, we would like to, instead of directly expanding our business on smart devices, focus on achieving greater ties with our consumers on smart devices and expanding our platform business.

We will use a small, select team of developers to achieve it. Also, we recognize that attracting consumers' attention among the myriads of mobile applications is not easy, and as I said before, we feel that simply releasing our games just as they are on smart devices would not provide the best entertainment for smart devices, so we are not going to take any approach of this nature. Having said that, however, in the current environment surrounding smart devices, we feel that we will not be able to gain the support of many consumers unless we are able to provide something truly valuable that is unique to Nintendo. Accordingly, I have not given any restrictions to the development team, even not ruling out the possibility of making games or using our game characters. However, if you report that we will release Mario on smart devices, it would be a completely misleading statement. It is our intention to release some application on smart devices this year that is capable of attracting consumer attention and communicating the value of our entertainment offerings, so I would encourage you to see how our approach yields results.

Getting More of Their Awesome Back-Catalog on Current Hardware

How Nintendo Plans on Tackling Its Toughest Year

Like the 3DS, the DS was yet another device that went from a head-scratching enigma to heavyweight champion. Lots of great games on there, too, but many of them haven't been available on the newer hardware that followed. That's going to change, with a stream of DS games promised for the Wii U Virtual Console. Here's Iwata, with our bolding:

We are now sure that we can solve the technical problem of displaying Virtual Console software from Nintendo DS on the GamePad.

The dual-screen Nintendo DS, one of which is a touch screen, has a very strong software lineup, and so we plan to add the Virtual Console titles from Nintendo DS software to the future Virtual Console lineup for Wii U.

Making the Wii U Work Better

Right now, you turn the Wii U on and you wait. Then you navigate through a bunch of menus that, really, you shouldn't have to. A new system update due out this summer will make it so you can get to playing games a lot faster. Straight from Nintendo's top guy, with our emphasis:

Unfortunately, however, after starting up Wii U, there is a wait of over 20 seconds before we can select a video game title, and hence it is not an ideal situation for users now.

To solve this problem, a quick start menu for the GamePad will become a reality after a future system update planned for early summer.

This new function is currently under development, and although we cannot show a demo with a real machine, we have made a video to show you what the function can do, so please take a look.

Focus on What Makes the Wii U Different: The GamePad

How Nintendo Plans on Tackling Its Toughest Year S

The Wii U has one thing that no other dedicated gaming system has: a controller that combines stick-and-button inputs with a touchscreen. What the system needs, Iwata said, are more games that showcase the strengths of the hybrid interface. Emphasis ours.

In order to do this, it is obvious that Our top priority task this year is to offer software titles that are made possible because of the GamePad. We have managed to offer several of such software titles for occasions when many people gather in one place to play, but we have not been able to offer a decisive software title that enriches the user's gameplay experience when playing alone with the GamePad. This will be one of the top priorities of Mr. Miyamoto's software development department this year.

They're Going to Check Your Heartbeat

How Nintendo Plans on Tackling Its Toughest Year S

Portable gaming, perfecting 3D game design, motion control… Nintendo's key to success in the past has been finding areas of game-based interaction that its competitors haven't. Now, they think that health and wellness might be one of these shark-free 'blue oceans.'

The theme of "health." Of course, defining a new entertainment business that seeks to improve QOL creates various possibilities for the future such as "learning" and "lifestyle," but it is our intention to take "health" as our first step.

Please note, however, that rather than simply setting health as our theme, Nintendo will also try to expand it in a new blue ocean.

When we use "health" as the keyword, some may inevitably think about "Wii Fit." However, we are considering themes that we have not incorporated to games for our existing platforms. Including the hardware that will enable such an idea, we will aim to establish a blue ocean.

As those who are already suffering from illness can seek medical care, our new business domain would be providing preventive measures which would require us to enable people to monitor their health and offer them appropriate propositions.

Very Special Guest Stars

How Nintendo Plans on Tackling Its Toughest Year S

When Nintendo characters show up in games that aren't made by the House of Mario, it's a big deal. Expect that to some evolution on that front, Iwata said. Emphasis ours.

Also, we are planning to utilize Nintendo's abundance of character IP more actively. I think the reason that Nintendo is now considered to have this "abundance of character IP" is perhaps because of our passive approach toward the character IP licensing business, which tends to have a high risk of damaging the value of the character. In other words, we think that spending time to develop our approach of having our characters appear mainly in our carefully selected games has created our current fortunate circumstances. However, we are going to change our policy going forward.

To be more precise, we will actively expand our character licensing business, including proactively finding appropriate partners. In fact, we have been actively selling character merchandise for about a year in the U.S.

Also, we will be flexible about forming licensing relationships in areas we did not license in the past, such as digital fields, provided we are not in direct competition and we can form win-win relationships.

By moving forward with such activities globally, we aim to increase consumer exposure to Nintendo characters by making them appear in places other than on video game platforms.

Flexible Pricing Might Be a Way to Expand Nintendo's Reach

How Nintendo Plans on Tackling Its Toughest Year S

Getting somebody to jump on board the Nintendo bandwagon might be easier if the cost of entry was a little lower. Iwata's remarks on that:

Needless to say, there are core users in new markets who buy our hardware and software at the same price as in the existing markets and we really appreciate these consumers. For a large majority of consumers in the new markets, however, the current prices of hardware and software in the existing markets are generally difficult to accept.

To leverage Nintendo's strength as an integrated hardware-software business, we will not rule out the idea of offering our own hardware for new markets, but for dramatic expansion of the consumer base there, we require a product family of hardware and software with an entirely different price structure from that of the developed markets.

Once we can establish such a connection with consumers in these nations, we will be able to use smart devices to share our information as well as important content distribution infrastructure. We plan to take significant steps toward such a new market approach in the year 2015.

Buy More, Pay Less

How Nintendo Plans on Tackling Its Toughest Year S

If your love of Nintendo runs deep, you might be getting a reward better than the coolest Club Nintendo swag: less pain on your wallet.

For example, until now it has been taken for granted that software is offered to users at the same price regardless of how many titles they purchase in a year, be it one, five or even ten titles. Based on our account system, if we can offer flexible price points to consumers who meet certain conditions, we can create a situation where these consumers can enjoy our software at cheaper price points when they purchase more.

If we can achieve such a sales mechanism, we can expect to increase the number of players per title, and the players will play our games with more friends. This can help maintain the high usage ratio of a platform. When one platform maintains a high active use ratio, the software titles which run on it have a higher potential to be noticed by many, which leads to more people playing with more titles. When we see our overall consumers, they generally play two or three titles per year. We aim to establish a new sales mechanism that will be beneficial to both consumers and software creators by encouraging our consumers to play more titles and increasing a platform's active use ratio without largely increasing our consumers' expenditures.

One Username, All of Nintendo

How Nintendo Plans on Tackling Its Toughest Year

A feature that users have been requesting for a while now—a unified Nintendo Network ID—could be on its way to becoming a reality.

On Wii U, we launched Nintendo Network IDs, which are abbreviated as NNIDs. This is the first step of our efforts to transform customer relationship management from device-based to account-based, namely, consumer-based, through which we aim to establish long-term relationships with individual consumers, unaffected by the lifespans of our systems. Our future platform will connect with our consumers based on accounts, not devices.

Of course, when we do launch new hardware in the future, rather than re-creating an installed base from scratch as we did in the past, we wish to build on our existing connections with our consumers through NNIDs and continue to maintain them. Another very important point that we need to consider is how we will incorporate smart devices into Nintendo platforms, which were composed solely of Nintendo hardware in the past.

The Lego Movie is funny. Like really funny. Don't believe us? Check out these nine clips. If you don't (at least) chuckle, you're dead inside. Also, they introduce the greatest character ever made — Princess Uni-Kitty!

Big props to directors Phil Lord, Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) and Chris McKay for actually turning The Lego Movie into something other than a giant add for Lego. This movie is front loaded with 1,001 jokes, and continues to blast the audience with sheer creative joy. These clips are an excellent example of why you should probably check this film out.

Loving Vincent, the First Ever Feature-Length Painted Animation

Imagine, if you will, a feature-length animation about the life and death of post-Impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh. Now imagine that the animation is made entirely from paintings created in Van Gogh's iconic style, and you're beginning to understand why we're so excited about Loving Vincent.

The movie is currently in production at Oscar-winning studio BreakThru Films, and will be the first feature-length film animated entirely through hand-painted canvases. Remember the 35-minute version of Blade Runner that was created in 12,597 watercolor paintings? Loving Vincent is a little like that, but more labor intensive. BreakThru describes the project on its Kickstarter page, where the studio is raising money to bring the project to fruition:

Every film you see is actually a collection of still images, played back at a speed that makes it appear to be moving. In our film about Vincent Van Gogh, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE individual images will be a painting in the style of Van Gogh. That means our 40 painters (which we will be able to train thanks to YOUR support) will create 56,800 PAINTINGS to make this film!! To make this possible OUR WONDERFUL TEAM created PAWS (Painted Animation Work Stations) that allows us to make the demanding process of stop-motion painting as efficient as possible, by allowing our artists to focus on the painting as opposed to the animation. In fact, over the past 18 months of R&D we've managed to halve the painting time of each frame, while maintaining the individuality of the painters.

And here's what the PAWS look like in person:

Loving Vincent, the First Ever Feature-Length Painted Animation S

Pretty incredible, no? We hesitate to call Loving Vincent a more daunting undertaking than this 35-minute version of Blade Runner, which was animated with 12,597 watercolor paintings, seeing as it will ultimately represent the work of significantly more people (although Loving Vincent will also involve more paintings, of arguably greater detail); but we think you'll agree it looks impressive. We can't wait to see where this project goes.

It's officially that point in the year where I start salivating for any and all tidbits of information regarding the new season of Game of Thrones; if you're like me, than you'll appreciate even the brief glimpses this new behind-the-scenes featurette gives us of the next round of the game.

Besides all the talking heads of the cast and crew, all of whom praise the gigantic scope of the show in general and season 4 in particular, we get a view of: Tywin sitting on the Iron Throne, with Oberyn Martell and Mace Tyrell sitting next to him; Mark Gatiss as the Braavosi banker Tycho Nestoris (shown talking briefly to Stannis and Davos); Styr, the Magnar of Thenn (the super-bald guy chatting with D.G. Weiss); more of the Wildlings' attack on the wall; some Arya badassery prep, and more. Is it April 6th yet? Sigh.

New Survey Supports the Theory that the Universe Is Infinite S

New measurements from the Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) study have charted the shape and size of our universe to within 1% accuracy. Above, David Schlegl, a physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and research team member, describes the flat, and probably infinite, Universe that the findings suggest.

Via Brookhaven National Laboratory:

New Survey Supports the Theory that the Universe Is Infinite S

The gray spheres [in the artist's conception above] show the pattern of the "baryon acoustic oscillations" from the early Universe. Galaxies today have a slight tendency to align on the spheres (the alignment is greatly exaggerated in this illustration). By comparing the size of the spheres (the white line) to the predicted value, astronomers can determine to one-percent accuracy how far away the galaxies are.

Combined with recent measures of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) and supernova measures of accelerating expansion, the BOSS results suggest that dark energy — the force thought to be driving universal expansion — is a cosmological constant whose strength does not vary in space or time. This finding doesn't quite line up with Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, and researchers say that "understanding the physical cause of the accelerated expansion remains one of the most interesting problems in modern physics."

The BOSS data "also provides one of the best-ever determinations of the curvature of space. The answer is, it's not curved much. One of the reasons we care is that a flat universe has implications for whether the universe is infinite," says [Schlegel.]

WB may shoot Justice League immediately after Batman Vs. Superman S

Please head to your nearest salt dispensary and grab a choice-looking grain first, but the rumor mill says WB/DC will be shooting a Justice League movie back-to-back with Batman Vs. Superman, turning them into one extended shoot, but truth be told this rumor makes a lot of sense.

As Latino Review points out, there are several reasons that point to a double-shoot: 1) the schedules of the stars involved, especially Ben Affleck, who it will be much easier to keep rather than try to schedule back for filming next year; 2) the multitude of heroes being cast, which seem more reasonable if they'll be introduced in two movies instead of just one; 3) there's also a rumor that Batman Vs. Superman will end have a cliffhanger ending, which WB/DC might theoretically feel safer doing if a sequel was ensured to be coming out the following year, but this is two rumors trying to support each other, so it's kind of tenuous.

So, yeah. If true, I think this is a very smart decision on WB's part. Feels weird typing it out like that.

Peter Parker is coming back to prove Amazing Spider-Man > Superior

Not a hoax! Not an imaginary story! Writer Dan Slott is finally bringing Peter Parker back to the Marvel universe this April and putting him back inside his own body as god/Stan Lee and Jack Kirby intended. The days of the Superior Spider-Man are numbered — but Peter's resurrection isn't coming without a price.

It's the way he comes back that's the issue, apparently. From the press release:

However, the question on everyone's mind has not been the "when", but the "how" Peter Parker returns from the dead and Slott is quick to tease just that. "In a strange and terrifying way. And... possibly... at a very great cost. Remember, nothing is ever easy for Peter Parker. It's one of the reasons he's a true hero," says Slott.

Peter will return in The Amazing Spider-Man #1, due out this April. I'm curious to know what's happening to Doc Ock's consciousness... if it's actually going anywhere at all. I can easily see Doc Ock sticking around Peter's head for a while, playing the role of the world's crappiest conscience.

HOLY cow Jessica Chastain looks astoundingly similar to Disney Princess Merida. Disney fairy tale photographer Annie Leibovitz created a pretty compelling recreation of Merida, thanks to Jessica Chastain and a gigantic ginger wig. The similarity is striking — she even has the same smirk!

WHERE YOUR DESTINY AWAITS — In a new image by acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz unveiled today by Disney Parks, Jessica Chastain stars as the adventurous princess, Merida, from 'Brave.' The newest 'Disney Dream Portrait' from Leibovitz was commissioned by Disney Parks for their ongoing celebrity advertising campaign which debuted in 2007. The image, which will appear in the February issue of 'O – The Oprah Magazine,' is entitled, 'Where your destiny awaits.' (Annie Leibovitz for Disney Parks).
