JS Carter posted these images on her Tumblr blog, explaining that when she was 10, she wrote to Lemony Snicket and received a form letter in response. It was seven years before she noticed that the missing letters in this missive spelled out a coded message.
That hidden message explains why the writer had to be so terse in his reply.
