The bacteria Staphylococcus aureus is a benign resident of the human microbiome. But in the last 15 years, a strain of it has evolved to become a major public health problem. To understand how everyday microbes can change so dramatically, laboratories are investigating how bacterial communities exchange genetic information in the environments we share.

Behold the Pertamina Energy Tower, a U.S.-designed building that's slated for construction in Jakarta, Indonesia. Reaching a height of a half-kilometer, the tower will harvest its own wind energy through an opening at its peak.

Once completed in 2020, the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill-designed building will be twice as high as Wisma 46, the tallest building currently in Indonesia. The completed tower will feature a "wind funnel" at the top that generates energy from prevailing air currents.

In addition, the tower will have a shape and orientation that's perfectly calibrated to Jakarta's proximity to the equator — a curved facade that will mitigate heat gain throughout the year.

The 99-story Pertamina Tower will accommodate 20,000 employees. Described as a "city within a city," the building will host a 2,000-seat auditorium, a mosque, and a central energy plant.

Why people's problems with a female Doctor Who are wrong, wrong, wrong onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

Why people's problems with a female Doctor Who are wrong, wrong, wrong S

Look, before we get started, let me assure you all that I know the character is called The Doctor, and not Doctor Who. But you can't just have an article headline, even on io9, that only mentions the Doctor, because many people won't realize you're referring to Doctor Who. The same is true in my time, but inevitably some Who-ligan will correct me. The show hasn't aired in 30 years, but these people feel it is super-fucking-important to make sure you know he's only called "The Doctor." It's like, we live in the post-apocalypse, people. Why don't we try to invent running water again before we stress about Doctor Who nomenclature.

By the way, this awesome cosplay in the pic above is by janey-jane. Check out more of her awesomeness over at her DeviantArt page.

Doctor's Orders

Fake Name:

Apocalyptic Postman,

I'm writing to you from late November 2013, at a time when the Doctor Who 50th anniversary celebration has just passed. Though I should be satisfied with the excellent productions cranked out in association with the program, particularly the centerpiece "Day of the Doctor," which only a curmudgeon could have found serious fault with.

Alas, despite the show's standing and worldwide popularity, I am filled with unease unto dread, plagued with the nagging vision of Doctor Who's impending apocalypse with every new regeneration since David Tennant's. At the heart of this vision is nearly-overwhelming fear: namely, the fear that someday the character of the Doctor will be played by a woman.

Now hear me out; this is no hyper-traditional, vaguely sexist off-the-cuff remark like the recent one by Peter Davison based on that's-the-way-it-always-has-been reasoning, I promise.

Here's my thought: Regardless of whether the producers of the show at that time have found *the* perfect choice for the first-ever female Doctor, regardless of her acceptance by fandom, regardless of how seamlessly this transition naturally flows from the plot line, the truth is the majority of mainstream viewership will simply see the move to a female Doctor as complete and utter jumping the shark. This would not be due to stupidity or some general lack of imagination, I believe, but rather because it would *look exactly like* complete and utter jumping of the shark.

In my vision, Helen Mirren or Olivia Colman or Billie Piper (gods help us) is revealed as the choice to play the Nth Doctor. Millions turn off (and turn off to) the program immediately upon the announcement. By the end of season one, episode one of the new Doctor's reign, lines otherwise thought merely pithy and/or throwaway will be found to be little more than cheap shots and/or evidence of the scriptwriter's lack of knowledge of women, thereby alienating another large portion of viewership. By the time this generation's Sylvester McCoy is called in a futile attempt to save a program universally judged as "camp" at best, the writing's on the wall. Soon, the program is exterminated more fully than any Dalek could have managed.

So tell me, please, Mr. Postman, in hopes that insomnia will not rule my nights when Peter Capaldi's contract is not reupped, tell us from your future vantage point: Will the Doctor someday be cast as a woman? And how much longer do we have after that?

Okay, first of all, I'm not using your real name as I suspect a few (thousand) people may (virulently) disagree with you. No need to let those people have your real name and Google-stalk you to tell you how wrong you are. Second, what?

I think your primary argument — which you have worded impressively poorly (which, hey, I have done on many an occasion, so my sympathies) — is that Doctor Who shouldn't have a female Doctor because 1) people won't like it, 2) the writers will use it as a platform for cheap jokes ("Now that's I'm a woman, maybe I should be called the Nurse!") and 3) the show will turn into camp.

Let's break this down.

1) People won't like it. Hey, I'm a pessimist, but even I think most people could handle a female Doctor. Sure, there will be fuddy-duddys like Peter Davison who feel otherwise, but I guarantee you he thinks every change to Doctor Who is a grievous error. Besides, this argument is based on your latter arguments — people are going to need reasons to dislike a female Doctor beyond just her having boobs, and I think your latter arguments are also incorrect.

2) The writers will make cheap jokes about it. This is plausible, but self-defeating. Lots of shows can't write decent female characters, but does that mean we should never feature shows with female characters? Obviously not. Likewise, we can't not have a female Doctor just because it might be shitty. And besides, I don't know that the current Doctor Who guys have given us any reason to believe they'll be any worse at writing female characters than anyone else. Amy Pond, River Song and Clara have all been pretty good. Sure, the show has other writing problems, but I've never considered the female characters to be one of them.

3) The show will turn into camp. Excuse me, have you seen Doctor Who before? The show with farting aliens, serial fez wearing, and "Fear Her"? Are you really telling me that a female Doctor is somehow worse for the series than the Slitheen? No. Just… no.

Coming from the future as I do, I can tell you that the Doctor swapping genders is something that definitely happens before the apocalypse, so you'd best make your peace with it. The female Doctor didn't add or subtract any problems from the show (other than, you know, the problem that the Doctor had always previously been played by white dudes). Although I will admit that someone did make a "The Doctor? More like The Nurse!" joke, but the Doctor immediately decked them, so it was all right.

P.S. — I find it exceedingly odd that you liked the 50th anniversary special but are vastly disturbed at the idea of a female Doctor. Perhaps because a female Doctor only has potential problems, while the 50th anniversary special had actual problems. Don't Doctor Who fans have enough to worry about right now without making up additional issues?

Sense of Wonder

Clay K.:

wonder woman needs a female director with no bs. there is only one person for this job:

kathryne bigelow.

thoughts?

I wouldn't necessarily say she's the only person for the job, but I don't know of anyone better suited. I'd say it's a moral necessity to have a woman direct a Wonder Woman film, lest we get Man of Steel But With Boobs, but I would doubt Warner Bros. feels the same, because having an actual woman direct Wonder Woman is a good idea and Warner Bros. doesn't seem to particularly care for those.

By the way, Charlie Jane is exactly right when detailing the potential horrors of Zack Snyder's Wonder Woman (that the dude who made Sucker Punch is the dude who is bringing WW to the big screen make me mildly nauseous). My only hope is that WB keeps Zack Snyder on the main DC movie-verse franchise, and hires someone else to direct a solo Wonder Woman movie. Although it will almost certainly be McG. "Hey, he directed the Charlie's Angels movies, he gets women!" a WB executive will shout triumphantly, his nose frosted with cocaine.

Magic Trick

Brian ?:

Is Marvel trying to be anti-magic/spiritual?

I mean in the first Thor movie everyone clearly stated they were gods and that they used magic. Then in Thor 2 everything is no longer magic just complex science, and Odin says that asgardians are just more powerful long lasting versions of mortals.

And in Agents of Shield a saint and mythical warrior turn out to be just a guy, and a portal to hell ended up just being another planet. Marvel has a Satan and Mephisto, but they didnt even toy with the idea of it being hell.

Isn't all this "all magic is just science" motif gonna be a problem since they are making a Black Panther and Dr. Strange movie, and both of those characters have a good understanding and usage of magic?

I understand your point, but I don't think it'll be much of a problem. Despite the "magic is science we don't understand yet" of Thor, there's still room for actual magic in the Marvel Universe, whether it be Dr. Strange, Scarlet Witch in Avengers 2, or… another character in the Marvel U. who uses magic that isn't Loki. It may be a bit jarring, after the "realism" of the Marvel movie-verse so far, but I think audiences can handle it, and if Marvel is going to make a Dr. Strange movie, and by all accounts and common sense they are, I'm reasonably sure they have a plan to do so that will gel with the rest of the movies.

What Marvel doesn't want to do is introduce the idea of divinity or religion into their movie-verse, because that can possibly do is piss certain people off. So no hell, no Mephisto, no gods Norse or otherwise — just crazy alien beings whose technology ls called magic and which looks for all intents and purposes like magic and who were also worshipped as gods by various humans in the past despite not really being gods. Marvel really doesn't want to say Thor is an actual god, because someone, somewhere, will immediately ask about Marvel's Jesus, and there's no right answer to that question.

I admit, though, I'm really curious if the Scarlet Witch will actually have her "hex powers" in Avengers 2. Hex powers sound like a pretty hard thing to show on screen, and the Marvel movie-verse isn't really prepared for magic yet. Introducing it with a lower-tier character in Avengers 2 doesn't exactly sound like the right way to do it. I'd think Marvel would need to introduce magic in, say, a Dr. Strange movie, establish the rules, get audiences used to it, and then introduce it into the movie-verse proper.

Weirdly, if Avengers 2 just says the Scarlet Witch has a power that affects probability and luck, then that might actually fly. She could theoretically be in a big fight scene, causing loose bricks to fall on evil robots, helping Hawkeye's arrows hit exactly the right place to shit them down, causing malfunctions, etc. It only gets weird if they call it magic. For now.

Free Enterprise

Ken P.:

I fear the Dr. Who 50th has put the Trek 50th in a Kobayashi Maru like scenario. Having multiple regenerations and being unbound by time and space means the Who 50th can cash in on 50 years of nostalgia without feeling overly contrived or cheesy, you know like Star Trek Generations.

However, there have been times where Star Trek can successfully appeal to nostalgia i.e. Spock and Scotty's appearances in TNG and the DS9 tribble episode. Personally, I would avoid screwing with continuity, aged actors, set and prop design and focus on making good Trek. But that's presumably what they do anyway with mixed success and don't you think the fans will revolt without somehow devising a way for all the Enterprises and Voyager to all dock at DS9 without seeming contrived?

Do you see an out for this no win scenario?

Yeah, don't worry about it, because all Paramount is going to do for Star Trek's 50th anniversary is re-release the shows on DVD and maybe — maybe release the third nu-Trek movie. There will be no anniversary special, especially not one set in the classic Trek universe (there may be a documentary-type special on TV, but I doubt it). There will be no official celebration, nothing that pulls together all the classic series, except maybe a commemorative poster or something. I imagine the closest thing we'll get to an on-screen acknowledgement of 50 years of Star Trek will be the third movie rehashing something from the original movies — probably space whales — but Paramount was almost certainly going to do that anyways, no matter the year.

Homicide Squad

Tim S.:

Dear Mr Postman

Finally watched Man of Steel. Did not have an issue with Superman Killing Zod.

Why?

Because Superman *would* kill in that situation!

He killed Doomsday. He killed Darkseid. If those were extenuating circumstances, this was too.

Thank you for your service

Yes, Superman has killed people in the comics. And Batman has used guns and Wonder Woman was the Justice League's secretary (see above) and Green Lantern killed an entire city of people and Captain America was a werewolf for a while.

In 70 years of comics, there have been a handful of comic writers who have decided to let Superman kill bad guys, but because it happened before doesn't make it right for the character. I'd say the millions of times Superman has not killed villains is a bit more indicative of his character. And I'd say if Batman refuses to kill people, which he does, then Superman should refuse to kill people even harder.

Again, if you want to see the problem with Superman killing bad guys, go check out Injustice Vol. 1. It's based on the DC videogame from the Mortal Kombat guys, but it's one of my favorite superhero books of the year for this very reason (and it's good besides).

Plus, Reeves also released the news that the first ever Dawn trailer will be released on December 18th, which is soon! Until then, I think it's our duty to name these fellas. Clearly the second ape is Caesar, but I think the last guy should be named Noodles.

Scientists are close to solving one of 2013's greatest mysteries [UPDATING]

Earlier this year, graduate student Troy Alexander discovered an oddly intricate maypole-like structure in the Peruvian Amazon. Since then, nobody has been able to conclusively say what made it. Now, a team of biologists stationed in the Amazon says it's close to solving the mystery.

The first major update on the structures came yesterday evening from Phillip Torres and Lary Reeves, members of the research team devoted to identifying the bug (or spider, or fungus) responsible for these remarkable little creations:

The update was followed this morning by a Facebook post from Rainforest Expedition's Tambopata Research Center (where Alexander was stationed when he first encountered the mystery structure earlier this year) confirming that more of the structures had been discovered. A few minutes later, Torres shared the Research Center's post, adding that the mystery is being solved "by the hour" and that they would update their findings soon.

No word yet on why the researchers believe the answer is at hand. Are they waiting for something to hatch? Are they running tests on samples? We can't wait to find out. We'll keep you posted on any updates!

Norway is digitizing its whole library onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Norway is digitizing its whole library

In Norway, all library books must be digitized -- by law

A law in Norway has their National Library scanning all literature and then making it publicly available to anyone to anyone coming in under a Norwegian IP address. Pretty cool, if you're in Norway now or in the near-ish future. But it's also pretty awesome for the much more distant future.

Why? The Atlantic explains:

Imagine digital archaeologists coming across the remains of early 21st century civilization in an old data center on the warming tundra. They look around, find some scraps of Buzzfeed and The Atlantic, maybe some Encyclopaedia Britannicas, and then, gleaming in the data: a complete set of Norwegian literature.

The project has been going on since 2006 and they expect to be caught up in the next 20 years with a complete record of all literature that's been published in Norway.

So, what would be first on your list to digitize, both for current public usage and for posterity? And how does that compare to what is currently being digitized in your own locale right now? And folks out in Norway, tell us how its going so far — are you using your digital library yet?

Freakishly realistic telemarketing robots are denying they're robots S

This is how it starts, people. First we get our chatbots to sound and act realistic — and then we get them to convince everyone they're actually human. Listen to this crazy conversation between Time's Michael Scherer and a telemarketing robot who refuses to admit her true artificial nature.

Recently, Time Washington Bureau Chief Michael Scherer received a phone call from an apparently bright and engaging woman asking him if he wanted a deal on his health insurance. But he soon got the feeling something wasn't quite right.

After asking the telemarketer point blank if she was a real person or a computer-operated robot, she chuckled charmingly and insisted she was real. Looking to press the issue, Scherer asked her a series of questions, which she promptly failed. Such as, "What vegetable is found in tomato soup?" To which she responded by saying she didn't understand the question. When asked what day of the week it was yesterday, she complained of a bad connection (ah, the oldest trick in the book).

Here, listen for yourself:

Several Time reporters called her back.

Her name, she said, was "Samantha West." More from Time:

If you want, you can call her too. Her number is (484) 589-5611. This number, if you Google it, is the subject of much discussion online as other recipients of Samantha West calls complain on chat boards about the mysteriously persistent lady who keeps calling them. "A friendly sounded woman on the other end claimed I requested health insurance information," writes one mark. "She doggedly refused to deviate from her script."

After answering her questions, one Time reporter was transferred to an actual human who did not promptly end the call, as others had when asked about Samantha. Asked for the company's website, the real human on the other end of the line said it was premierhealthagency.com, the website of a Ft. Lauderdale company. "We're here to help. . . because we care," is the company motto on its homepage. A Time reporter called the company directly, identified himself and said Time was doing a story about the robot who calls people on the company's behalf. "We don't use robot calls, sir," said the person who answered the phone, before promptly hanging up the phone.

Disturbing, no? This is a problem that's only set to get worse. And just wait until these things are smart enough to start scamming unsuspecting victims.

Japan Reacts to the Godzilla Trailer

Finally! The world gets its first trailer for Hollywood's upcoming Godzilla film. What did you think? You might have an opinion. I might. Japan definitely does.

Internet users on Japan's largest bulletin board 2ch have chimed in with their opinions regarding the teaser. This isn't the first time Japanese net users have given their two cents for the new 'Zilla. Earlier this fall, 2ch commenters also chimed in on art for the film.

Below, you can see selected 2ch quotes from two threads (here and here) on the trailer. I tried to pull a good mix of quotes from various commenters, showing the range of reactions in Japan. Embedded links were added for clarification.

"I can look forward to this more than that tuna-eating Godzilla from before."

"This seems good. Along with Pacific Rim, it really seems that more than the Japanese film industry, the American movie industry is in full swing with kaiju movies."

"This looks like a rental."

"Just looking at the poster gives it that Godzilla feeling of the original."

"Is this CG? A man in a suit?"

"I cracked up when I saw Ken Watanabe was in another Hollywood film. But I thought it looked pretty interesting."

"A Godzilla without tokusatsu effects is not Godzilla."

"This isn't another pseudo-lizard, is it?"

"Godzilla is huge."

"Don't you wonder why there are skydivers?"

"Jean Reno, sadness."

"There were complaints about the lizard Godzilla, but I think America doing America's interpretation is fine."

"Put Mothra in it."

"Why is there a Godzilla movie now?"

"I wonder what Ken Watanabe's role is."

"I saw the previous Hollywood version, and it was somewhat interesting. I'll probably go see this."

"Enormous."

"The last one felt like Jurassic Park. This one seems like Cloverfield."

"But it eats tuna, right?"

"Woah, Godzilla looks like Godzilla."

"They'll probably say Godzilla was created from Fukushima's radioactive effects."

"Personally, I liked the previous lizard Godzilla. But I didn't have much love for Godzilla in the first place..."

"I'm looking forward to this. I'm just happy to see a new Godzilla movie. Japan ain't making them."

"Gipsy Danger is huge. Godzilla wouldn't win."

"Hollywood's lapdog: Ken Watanabe."

"This seems kinda interesting. But who's the director?"

"This is nothing but the typical Yankee notion that Godzilla is a cruel destroyer."

"I guess they're paying to use Godzilla's likeness."

"It appears once again, the U.S. military is going to kill it at the end."

"Since Godzilla looks like Godzilla, I can look forward to this."

"This stinks of Cloverfield."

"As usually, I haven't seen it, so I can't say anything."

Previously, director Gareth Edwards promised our colleagues at io9 that his film will stay true to the Japanese original—something that Ken Watanabe also promised in a recent interview.

And in case you missed it, here are io9's impressions of this summer's Godzilla footage.

Star Wars

The latest actor to join the ever-evolving list of possible cast members of Star Wars is Jack O'Connell. He was previously in seasons three and four of Skins and will be seen in next years 300: Rise of an Empire and Angelina Jolie's Unbroken. Bleeding Cool says they have two "very dependable voices" putting O'Connell in the running for a "key role," and that he's already met with J.J. Abrams. As usual, nothing's confirmed, and O'Connell's just the latest name. [Slashfilm]

Amazing Spider-Man Sequels

Even though Sony's announced plans to do Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4, Andrew Garfield's only committed to do the third. And he's recently hinted that he may not be in the fourth:

I mean I'm under contract for another one after this… as far as a fourth one? That's not anything to do with me. But yeah, I think what we're doing here is we've established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world.

He also discussed what he liked about doing Amazing Spider-Man 2:

I think there was something missing in the first one because our focus wasn't on character as much we were trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air – How can we reintroduce the character? How do we not upset this guy or this guy? That was a tough wasteland we had to move through. Now we could say, 'who is this guy?' How can we best serve Spider-Man?'

[Coming Soon]

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Wondering why Legolas is going to be in this film, when he's nowhere in the book? Here's Peter Jackson's answer:

People always ask about Evangeline's character Tauriel and why we felt the need to create her. But in The Hobbit novel, [the dwarves] are captured by the elves and they escape in the barrels. And it's a memorable part of the book but the Elf King is not even named. He doesn't have a name. And it was only later on that Tolkien decided it should be Thranduil and he also decided he should have a son when Lord of the Rings was written 18-19 years later. He created the character of the son of the king.

So you've got material there but you can't have a scene in a film that's a memorable scene with just one person as the Elf. We wanted three Elven characters. That's the thing too, to create characters and have conflict with each other and they have different agendas. Thranduil, Legolas and Tauriel are all on different flight paths which makes it much more interesting ability for Fran [Walsh] and I to tell the narrative through their eyes.

Remember when Peter Jackson said he wanted to direct an episode of Doctor Who? Well, he's now saying that the discussions about it are "actually kind of serious." He went on to say:

I would be very happy to. I'd love to try my hand at television, because I've never had the discipline of having to shoot for those impossibly tiny schedules. I think I could do it okay now.

The Walking Dead

Following the midseason finale, Robert Kirkman spoke with Comic Book Resources about what's to come when the show returns and how the rest of this season will play off the comic. He gave this roundabout answer to the question about Baby Judith's ambiguous fate:

It's certainly shot in a way that facilitates what comes next. Unfortunately, I can't reveal what that "next" is. It's entirely possible that that baby is dead, and it's entirely possible that that baby isn't. We'll just have to wait and see. What I will say is that whatever changes we've made to that storyline is done to initiate some really cool stuff moving forward. There's always a reason to why things have been changed or kept the same, but that's a really tough one to answer. We are keeping things a little bit ambiguous on purpose [regarding] Judith's well being or lack thereof. We'll just have to see, but we definitely have a plan.

He also explained that, if it's not clear that a major character's gone for good, they're planning a return:

It really all comes down to planning. Yeah, it's a little bit more difficult to do on television, but we never really lose track of a character without knowing exactly when we're going to pick them back up. That's really the key. Even before we had written Carol's exit from the show, we knew how and when she was going to return. With a character like that, we're not ever really going to have it be, "That's the last we'll see of them," without having it be set up as the definitive last time we'll see them. When we leave it hanging, it's with a return in mind. That's something work out in advance with characters like Merle, Carol and Morgan, but it's really all about planning. I'm happy to say that with Scott Gimple and everyone else we work with on the show, it's an idea we work hard at.

He also explained what the show's going look like when it comes back:

Coming into the back half of Season 4, we've stripped all of that away and put the characters back into the mode of, "I've got to hide and find food. Let's keep moving. I don't know where my friends are or if they're alive or dead." It's really that we're going to be coming back to the show in a time when characters are at their most vulnerable. That lets us do some really interesting things. Having it all stripped away and getting back to the core of survival in this world asks, "Will they rebuild again? Do they find another place? Are they going to find each other or stay separate for an indefinite amount of time?" These are all questions that are going to be driving the back half of the season and, I think, keep things very fresh and very interesting.

Tomorrow People

In advance of tonight's episode, Mark Pellegrino spoke about Jedikiah's intentions for the captured John:

It's an interesting thing that Jedikiah's captured John. I'm just speaking from an interpretive point of view here. It's true, canonically speaking, but it feels like it was accidental almost. Like, "I wish it didn't have to happen, but it happened." It happened just because he brought me to the surface and they were tracking me and they got to him. But it's a regretful thing. And now that John is in the clutches of Ultra, Jedikiah's got to negotiate some very strange territory. It's not just him at Ultra now; there's The Founder looking over his shoulder. So even if he wanted to protect John, he can't. And then there's the further complication of me loving somebody who's a Tomorrow Person, who's a possible chip in the game that Jedikiah's caught in between the Tomorrow People and Ultra.

. . . Jedikiah's shown himself to be a person of very strong will. In his life, he's acted against his emotions over and over and over again to do the thing that he thinks is right. I think he does have the strength to do something like [kill John], as much as it would break his heart. But he could, if it was for the greater good.

He also said that we will get a look at how deep Jedikiah's feelings for Morgan go:

You're going to see later on. You're going to see how deep his feelings are for her and how far they'll go. You may find it a bit… scary. [Laughs] It can change at a moment's notice. Jedikiah's willing to do a lot of things for love, for family and for what he thinks is right.

Daniel Henney (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will be in three episodes in January. Henney will play Peter Garner, and the only information about that character is showrunner Eric Kripke's description of him as "handsome, charming and incredibly intelligent." [The Hollywood Reporter via SpoilerTV]

And there we go: Die Bombe unter dem Arsch der Pornostreamingabmahner fängt an, ganz langsam in juristischer SuperSlowMotion zu explodieren:

There you go.)

Catt built an algorithm that scans The Guardian’s API, stripping away blog posts, multimedia, and other pieces in favor of articles over a certain length. Here’s a good explanation:

We plundered those tools for data and wrote our own little “robot” (a bunch of algorithms) to surface what we hoped would be good, interesting, sometimes funny, sometimes long articles. Just before I throw together a new issue of this paper I can head off to our dashboard that presents me with about 30 “top” articles, about 1% of all articles originally published by the Guardian.

The robot does the legwork, leaving an editor to pick and choose what stories work for the edition before handing the process off to a different robot. In this case, it’s The Newspaper Club’s ARTHR tool, a layout program that lets people feed in content from different sources, either links or individual text and images. Tom Taylor, head of engineering for The Newspaper Club, said they use a semi-automated version of ARTHR for The Long Good Read, which allows an editor to enter story links and lets the program develop the layout on its own.

Ich habe grade die Petition von über 500 Autoren gegen digitale Überwachung unterzeichnet, and you should too.

Telemarketing-Robot denies, she’s a Robot onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Telemarketing-Robot denies, she’s a Robot

When Scherer asked point blank if she was a real person, or a computer-operated robot voice, she replied enthusiastically that she was real, with a charming laugh. But then she failed several other tests. When asked “What vegetable is found in tomato soup?” she said she did not understand the question. When asked multiple times what day of the week it was yesterday, she complained repeatedly of a bad connection.

Over the course of the next hour, several TIME reporters called her back, working to uncover the mystery of her bona fides. Her name, she said, was Samantha West, and she was definitely a robot, given the pitch perfect repetition of her answers.

NSA is watching you with Google Cookies onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com NSA is watching you with Google Cookies

According to the documents, the NSA and its British counterpart, GCHQ, are using the small tracking files or “cookies” that advertising networks place on computers to identify people browsing the Internet. The intelligence agencies have found particular use for a part of a Google-specific tracking mechanism known as the “PREF” cookie. These cookies typically don’t contain personal information, such as someone’s name or e-mail address, but they do contain numeric codes that enable Web sites to uniquely identify a person’s browser.

In addition to tracking Web visits, this cookie allows NSA to single out an individual’s communications among the sea of Internet data in order to send out software that can hack that person’s computer. The slides say the cookies are used to “enable remote exploitation,” although the specific attacks used by the NSA against targets are not addressed in these documents.

MindGeek, the parent company of RedTube, denied allegations Monday that it divulged user information to third parties as outlined in a story reported by Die Welt. The adult entertainment conglomerate also said that it has no affiliation with the German law firm of Urmann and Collegen, which, according to Die Welt’s article, sent hundreds of warning letters to surfers “who have allegedly seen several pirated porn [movies] on the portal.” […]

MindGeek emphasized Monday that even IP addresses of users were never forwarded to any third parties at any time. “Our security measures and user privacy has always been a top priority for RedYube,” RedTube Vice President Alex Taylor said.
