Fresh off the outfit reveal yesterday, Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman were sighted filming in Cardiff's Queen Street earlier this morning - and damn, does he look good. Minor Spoilers beyond the cut!

It looks like The new Doctor and Clara aren't quite trusting of each other yet.

Clara looks especially distrusting. Also, is it odd how much I like the back of Peter Capaldi's outfit? He looks great standing there, cutting a fine silhouette.

But not for long! Clara embraces The Doctor, but he looks a little flustered at the sudden mood change.

Werewolves in the da' club leads to murder in da' club on Bitten S

Things have officially picked up on Bitten. Some major shit went down on the third episode of Syfy's "werewolves plus fucking" show, and with it some surprisingly real consequences. Plus, all the werewolves went to dance clubs!

We left the last episode with the pack finding a werewolf-mauled little boy right on their property. The hunters find them almost immediately and start a pissing match, I guess because the Stonehaven land is full of wolves (more specifically, wolf tracks), which leads the redneck hunters to believe the family are pro-child murder. After Elena freaks out one of the hunter's dogs and Clay gives a hunter a gentle pistol whip with his own gun, they back off. Jeremy calls the police.

Elena decides to stay, obviously, and Jeremy forms everyone's plan of attack: Elena and Clay will return to the city to hunt the Mutt, while Logan, Nick and Pete are sent to go find a Mutt named Karl Marsten, who supposedly is up-to-date on Mutt goings-ons (but more up-to-date than Elena's files?! Madness!). Later, Jeremy takes Elena aside to show her that her boring boyfriend, whose name I've forgotten and I can't even be bothered to look up, has sent her flowers, which Jeremy has hidden because Clay apparently can't handle knowing about them. But since Clay is a werewolf, he can smell them, and he can also overhear Elena's conversation with Dullard even though he's outside. It's actually a well-done scene, with no dialogue, where a clearly consternated Clay turns on his truck's radio really loud.

This is when all the werewolves hit the clubs. Elena and Clay, after randomly driving around town, find a flier for a club and decide to go there, and, of course, the evil Mutt is hanging out. Meanwhile, Nick, Pete and Logan head to Nick's club to meet Marsten, who is suspiciously easy to find (which, happily, was the show's intention and not just bad writing). Let's start here; basically, Marsten is supercilious and clearly hiding something, and he tells them he'd be glad to help as long as Jeremy thinks about letting him have some territory.

Meanwhile at the other nightclub, things quickly get more interesting. First of all, Elena and Clay hatch a plan where Elena enters the club and herds the Mutt through the back, where Clay will be waiting; this is neat because 1) it's a sensible plan and 2) it does give us some proof that Elena and Clay can be an effective team together.

Of course, this immediately goes to hell when Elena confronts the Mutt, the Mutt essentially tells her to fuck off, Elena refuses, the Mutt grabs her, and then Elena grabs the dude's heart with the help of some werewolf claws. She starts to threaten him, but before she really gets anywhere the sensation of having five sharp claws jammed into his chest makes the Mutt freak out a little, and he starts to transform — Elena barely manages to toss him in an office in the back before he wolfs out.

So while it's entirely Elena's fault for mismanaging the situation, this is a damned interesting conflict: Elena is charged with keeping werewolves secret, but now there's one transforming right behind her, and the only thing between it and a crowd of dancers is Elena and a none-too-sturdy door. Also, the Mutt is super-interested in killing people. Which, after bursting through the office's ceiling to get to the rafters and the balcony level, he does.

Werewolves in the da' club leads to murder in da' club on Bitten S

He mauls two victims before Elena and Clay chase him outside, where the cops have arrived. The sheriff shoots him a little, but then a truck hits him — I have no idea where it comes from, who was driving, or if it was even intentional — and splatters him everywhere. And then is when I learned werewolves in Bitten do not regenerate.

All that's left is for Clay to find the victim who was bitten but hasn't died, notice he's a heroin addict, and then smother him against his manly shoulder (it's a weird way to kill a grown man). Elena is upset, but Clay says he never would have survived the transformation process, and he just saved the dude days of agony. To its credit, Bitten makes the decision seem like it could go either way — Clay wanting to end the suffering of some poor dude, or Clay somewhat remorselessly keeping the Pack clean of ne'er-do-wells like heroin addicts.

All's well that ends well! Kind of! Because now that the crisis is over, Elena and Logan immediately book it for their home in Toronto, where they discover their significant others have arranged a dinner date for the four of them, which is super-boring but in which we learn members of the Pack are apparently horribly shitty liars — a drunk third-grader could have sounded more convincing than the two of them trying to get their story straight. Meanwhile, Pete heads off to join his band on tour again, and Nick and his dad Antonio decide to track Marsten and figure out what his deal is.

That leaves Jeremy and Clay, who are sad that Elena left; admittedly, Clay is more the brooding, shirtless, going for a wolf-run sad. Which is when Elena and Logan get a call telling them to come back. Because when Clay went on his sad run, he found Pete. Dead. It's ain't over. Which is sad for them, but great for us, because seriously, everything that happens in Toronto is boring as shit.

Werewolves in the da' club leads to murder in da' club on Bitten S

Assorted Musings:

• Everyone seems super-worried about the hunters being on their land, but they can control when they change into wolves and they can control what they do as wolves. They don't have to go out. What's the problem? Sure, it's kind of annoying, but it's not really a danger, is it?

• Elena and Clay knew where the Mutt lived. Is there a reason they didn't go back there and wait instead of wandering aimlessly around town and hitting random dance clubs?

• There's a scene somewhere in there of a dude meeting Dullard to have him make a presentation to convince his business partners to sell vodka. I assume this will lead to something somewhere down the line, but as it stands, it's the most useless, boring bit of television I've seen in some time. We're right in the middle of a werewolf murder investigation, on multiple fronts, and all of a sudden we switch to some personality-less dude who's asked to help make a Powerpoint or something.

• In my notes I had actually written "Nick, Pete and Logan make a good trio together." Oh well.

• I also liked the scene where Elena tells Clay he can't go in the club because he'll inevitably lose control and expose them, and Clay tells her off because it's completely unfair that she thinks he can't control himself. Not only is it a subtle indication of how much Elena still blames Clay for burning her into a werewolf, if Clay was going to be nothing but a perpetual hothead he was going to be almost as boring as Dullard (at least he turns into a wolf sometimes, though).

• "International Mutt of Mystery." I'm warming to you, Bitten. Don't fuck it up now.

• That said, Bitten, I'm very glad you had the dignity to have Elena say "It feels good to be home" during her reunion sex with Dullard, instead of the more obvious and more awful "It feels good to come home."

• Werewolf Shit We Learned: Any bite from a werewolf can turn you into a werewolf, as long as you aren't mauled so badly you die of your wounds naturally before you can turn. Although this will probably kill you anyways.

• Werewolf Shit I'm Still Confused About: I thought following the Pack rules made you a member of the Pack, but Marsten is clearly abiding by Wolf Law and yet is still considered a Mutt. Also, is the Pack the same as the family? Aren't there more law-abiding werewolves out there than just these guys? Because it sounds insane that there would be like six Official Werewolves all living in upstate New York, but the Bitten novel's Wikipedia page seems to indicate it's true.

• Philosophical question: If these guys can't turn into anthropomorphic wolf people can only turn into regular wolves, and can be killed by anything a wolf can be killed by, are these guys really werewolves, or just people who turn into wolves? Discuss.

Freedom Drop: The 1968 plan to nuke North Korea onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Freedom Drop: The 1968 plan to nuke North Korea

Freedom Drop: The 1968 plan to nuke North Korea S

When North Korea captured a U.S. Navy electronic surveillance ship, the USS Pueblo, in international waters in 1968, it was perhaps the worst security breach in U.S. history. One of the potential responses to North Korean aggression, drafted and approved by top military officials, was nuclear war.

The USS Pueblo was positioned in international waters (this is disputed by North Korea, of course) in January of 1968, using electronic means to intercept North Korean signals and messages. On January 23rd, North Korean ships opened fire on the Pueblo, which tried and failed to flee. The captain surrendered, and both the crew and ship were captured.

Freedom Drop: The 1968 plan to nuke North Korea S

That the crew were held (and tortured) for a year was bad enough, but the ship held an enormous amount of U.S. intelligence data. Worst of all, it held several devices used to decode encrypted U.S. military messages. Much later, the Navy would learn that the loss of the devices was compounded by the fact that the infamous Walker Spy ring was at the time already selling codes and other information to the Soviets.

The result of all this was a tense period during which the U.S. tried to figure out what the North Koreans were up to, the extent to which the U.S.S.R. and China were involved, and whether North Korea was planning an invasion of South Korea. During this same period, North Korean commandos were crossing the DMZ to attack targets in the south, including an attempted attack on the South Korean president's house. It wasn't quite Cuban Missile Crisis tense, but there were some white knuckles in the war room to be sure.

Diplomacy won out, with the U.S. basically waiting out the crisis until the Koreans released the prisoners, with some diplomatic help from the Soviets. Military aid to South Korea was increased, and the practice of leaving spy ships unarmed and alone while monitoring potentially hostile targets was brought into question. Today the USS Pueblo is a floating museum in Pyongyang – they gave back the crew but not the ship.

Recently declassified documents reveal the U.S.'s contingency plans, both for dealing with the capture of the Pueblo and for responding to a hypothetical North Korean invasion. The military's view of the situation was somewhat less diplomatic (which is their job, after all). They wanted to send a bunch of ships to Wŏnsan to flex their muscles and intimidate the North Koreans, but U.S. forces were a bit preoccupied in 1968, what with the Vietnam War and all. No ships were sent.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff then considered invading North Korea, bombing the living hell out of them with B-52s until their air force was simply nonexistent. Then the land troops would move in. Analysis showed that China and the U.S.S.R. were very likely to intervene in some way. The plan accounted for this. However, this plan would have required the U.S. to pull out of Vietnam almost entirely (it required 12 divisions of troops and 40 tactical bomber squadrons). In all they developed five military plans to deal with the situation, varying in timing and specific troop disposition. These plans were called Fresh Storm.

Freedom Drop: The 1968 plan to nuke North Korea

Then there was the nuclear plan, called Freedom Drop. It was developed by CINCPAC, the commander of the Pacific Fleet, who at the time was Admiral Ulysses S. Grant Sharp (Sharp was succeeded later in 1968 by Admiral John S. McCain, Jr., father of Senator John McCain). The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff approved the plan, so the potential responses included all-out nuclear war against tactical military targets – the Joint Chiefs delayed informing Sharp of the approval, however.

The warheads in such a situation would be delivered by Honest John rockets and Sergeant missiles, each with a maximum yield of 70 kilotons (very roughly five times the yield of the Hiroshima bomb). It would not have been a happy ending for anyone on the Korean peninsula.

You can see the documents themselves at the National Security Archive, hosted by George Washington University. Tip of the hat to Mark Strauss of Smithsonian Magazine, whose tweet this morning pointed me to the documents. The documents were uncovered by Jack Cheevers in researching his book Act of War.

On a somewhat related aside, the general of U.S. forces in South Korea at the time was a Rhodes Scholar who wore a patch over one eye. His name? General Charles H. Bonesteel III.

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com What's in your bag right now?

What's in your bag right now?

Empty out your backpacks, totes, and purses and tell us what's inside — though some researchers say that you may be revealing much more than you mean to.

Carefully-arranged photographs of the entire contents of the bags we carry, much like the selfie, have become a pretty common spin on the self-portrait (while not being an actual portrait at all). Pacific Standard has a look at some of these photos, and at Dominique Boullier, the anthropologist who studies them. She says that by looking at the similarities seen across the photos, we can get important clues about what's happening in a society:

Another bottle of hand sanitizer, another MacBook Air—there's rarely anything new to see. The images are clearly staged; the voyeuristic pleasures pretty minimal. Yet the content of the bags is still "anthropologically meaningful," says Dominique Boullier, a French sociologist who has studied these photos with a team of researchers at Sciences Po. While the images might not tell us too much about an individual (save whether she favors Macs or PCs), "they do reflect the environment he or she inhabits" . . . Bag-sharing has also emerged against the backdrop of large-scale online data collection and public surveillance, Boullier notes: "The bag traditionally is designed to hide your personal activities—but now you display it because you know that no matter what you do, everyone will know who you are, what you're doing, where you live."

So tell us what's in your bag right now (through either words or pictures), and what it would tell someone about you, where you live, and what you do.

Star Wars: Rebels unveils a new character. Marc Webb says Amazing Spider-Man 2 is actually about Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy's "delicate" relationship. A new Walking Dead photo features a fierce Michonne. And Jed Whedon claims that absolutely everything in Agents of SHIELD will pay off in the second half of the first season. Spoilers now!

Amazing Spider-Man 2

Director Marc Webb says that, while the sequel's visual effects are impressive, it's the relationship between Gwen and Peter that really shines in the sequel. Speaking with Total Film, Webb said:

It's huge. We're pushing the levels of effects, the level of action and the emotional capacity of this kid. It's an aggressive step forward. We throw around the term 'operatic' because of the spectacle and the theatre involved, which is pretty epic.

. . . There are enormous sets and great set-pieces. But really it's a very intimate song – this relationship between Peter and Gwen is very delicate and beautiful.

Arrow

Jessica de Gouw's returning as the Huntress. Not only that, but she's going to tangle with Caity Lotz's Canary. And yes, the episode is going to be titled "Birds of Prey." In it, Helena Bertinelli/Huntress will come back to Starling City in order to get revenge on her father. In order to do that, she'll battle Oliver and Sarah Lance. Said executive producer Marc Guggenheim:

We consider Jessica a member of the Arrow family and we're looking forward to having her back for an episode everyone will be talking about after.

[TV Guide]

Star Wars: Rebels

Speaking with MoviePilot.de, executive producer Dave Filoni explained that the goal of Rebels is to recapture the glory of the original trilogy:

We will see many things that are famous to Star Wars, but have not appeared on screen in a while. Star Destroyers, TIE Fighters, and Stormtroopers - basically the Empire is back and that is a big change, since, for many years, we have only seen the Republic in action. The tone of the series is also different. The Clone Wars got very dark as we headed towards the end of the war and the downfall of the Jedi. Star Wars Rebels brings back the banter and faster pace that the original films were famous for.

He also described the primary setting of the show, the planet Lothal:

Rebels takes place in the Outer Rim. The audience typically thinks of Tatooine as the place where Luke Skywalker grew up, when the Outer Rim is mentioned. We are on a more civilized planet, and one that profited from the Empire's existence in the beginning. Most of the stories take place on the planet Lothal, which is a grass planet with large monolithic stones on the surface. The look comes from some Ralph McQuarrie concept paintings that were done for the original Star Wars films. We tried to make Lothal look and feel like a planet that would have been in the original film trilogy. It's alien, but you feel like it's someplace that you could visit on Earth geographically. Hoth, Tatooine, and Endor are all like this, so we think it fits in well.

Revealed was another new character, the droid Chopper. Photos of him are below. [Coming Soon]

Agents of SHIELD

Executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen said that the recently announced news that Deathlok would be on the show was something that they'd been wanting to do since they started the show:

Deathlok had been on our radar from the beginning. He was at the top of our list of Marvel characters that we could bring in. It seems like a nice progression for Mike Peterson — when he becomes Deathlok, you're always going to root for the Mike Peterson that's still in there somewhere.

Fellow executive producer Jed Whedon hinted that even the standalone episodes are going to start paying off, now that we've hit the back end of the season:

These standalone episodes actually have a payoff, planting a seed in our universe that will then pay off. You start to see that [Ian] Quinn's involved with the Clairvoyant and Centipede; all these things are pieces of a whole that we try to build in a way that was respectful to the films, but can pay off. Now, we're excited to get to the point in the season where it does pay off.

You don't need to sleep. You just need to believe you've slept. onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com You don't need to sleep. You just need to believe you've slept.

You don't need to sleep. You just need to believe you've slept. S

A new study suggests that there's such a thing as the "sleep placebo" effect. Just believing you've gotten a good night's sleep is enough to help you perform better on tests and feel more energetic.

Apparently, people who think they've slept well behave like people who have slept well too. Especially if an authority figure like a psychologist tells them that their sleep has been scientifically measured, and found to be the right kind.

Julie Beck sums up the study over at The Atlantic:

Participating undergrads first reported how deeply they'd slept the night before, on a scale of one to 10. The researchers then gave the participants a quick, five-minute lesson about sleep's effect on cognitive function, telling them it was just background information for the study. During the lesson, they said that adults normally spend between 20 and 25 percent of their sleep time in REM sleep, and that getting less REM sleep than that tends to cause lower performance on learning tests. They also said that those who spend more than 25 percent of their sleep time in REM sleep usually perform better on such tests.

Then participants were hooked up to equipment that they were told would read their pulse, heartrate, and brainwave frequency, though it actually just measured their brainwave frequency. They were told that these measurements would allow the researchers to tell how much REM sleep they'd gotten the night before . . .

Then one of the experimenters pretended to calculate that each participant got either 16.2 percent REM sleep or 28.7 percent REM sleep the previous evening. After getting their reading, participants took a test that measures "auditory attention and speed of processing, skills most affected by sleep deprivation," according to the study . . . Participants who were told they had above-average REM sleep performed better on the test, and those who were told their REM sleep was below average performed worse, even when researchers controlled for the subjects' self-reported sleep quality.

Obviously this wouldn't work if the students had actually been sleep deprived. Basically, it was a test of how your opinions on whether you'd slept "well" could influence your actual performance. It sounds like a study whose results are similar to those in tests of stereotype priming, where people who are told that they will succeed at a certain task tend to perform better at it than people who have been told they will fail.

As Beck notes, however, it's also a lesson in perspective. If you've gotten some sleep but focus on how tired you still feel, you may undermine your performance at work, on tests, or elsewhere.

Warner Bros. wants to make a six-movie saga about King Arthur S

That's... that's a lot of King Arthur. According to Deadline, the WB is hoping to lure Guy Ritchie into helming a new franchise on Arthur, his knights, and their circular table. It's a plan that's as ambitious as it is... actually, it's just super-ambitious.

Hell, even Disney doesn't have plans to make six Star Wars movies yet, and that's an already established franchise. Even knowing how rich Arthurian myth is, I have a hard time imagining how the WB would translate it into six movies without padding it out or making shit up — because they're not going to give the knights their own movies to chronicle their quests; Arthur would need to star in all of them. Here's how I see it going down:

• King Arthur Episode 1: The Sword in the Stone

• King Arthur Ep. 2: The Might of Merlin

• King Arthur Ep. 3: Dude, Where's My Round Table?

• King Arthur Ep. 4: Lancelot and Guinevere's Fantastic Fuck Fest

• King Arthur Ep. 5: King Arthur Meets Frankenstein

• King Arthur Ep. 6: Serf Nazis Must Die

I eagerly await your suggestions in the comments.
