Tentacular stained glass octopus chandelier would light up any room

If your dining room is in dire need of tentacles (and have several grand to spare), this stained glass chandelier is happy to oblige, with detachable limbs that can prop up candles or glow all on their own.

This fun lighting fixture was made by Mason Parker of Mason's Creations. Parker explains that each of the tentacles would be roughly 30-inches long if stretched out, and the lamp itself measure four feet across. The body and the tentacles can light up separately or all at once.

But a creation like this doesn't come cheap. He is willing to part with a glass octopus like this one for $18,000.

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Nikita delivers one last glorious fake-out

Last night's Nikita finale had a definite feeling of wrapping up everything at top speed, as the pieces fell into place really quickly. But for all that, it still managed to deliver one final insane fake-out, doing the last thing you ever expected.

Spoilers ahead...

After last week's too-good-to-be-true happy ending, the last thing any of us would have seen coing is another ridiculously perfect happy ending. And yet, that's what we got. The episode led us down the garden path, until we were expecting some kind of tragic ending in which Nikita was denied the happiness that was dangled in her face in the penultimate episode. I was primed for some kind of Blake's 7-esque thing with Michael and Nikita killing each other or something.

Instead, we were being played. By Nikita, and by Nikita.

In the finale, Nikita and Alex go rogue one last time, to wipe out the other members of the shadowy Group behind the Shop, and get hold of the list of the 54 mind-controlled duplicates i positions of power around the world. We think Nikita's throwing it all away, including her newfound forgiveness and acceptance, for a last stab at revenge over the death of Ryan. And that she's willing to unleash global chaos to get what she wants.

Instead, it's all a lot of theatrics, as Nikita pretends to kill the puppetmasters and fakes a giant rampage, all for Amanda's benefit, so she can lure Amanda into a trap. See the above clip.

Yes, it's rushed and a bit sloppy — but in a "we wish we had a dozen more episodes to tell this story" way, not so much in a "we were making this up as we were going along" way. I'm reminded of the final short season of Jericho, where events were suddenly happening at lightning speed purely because the writers only had six episodes to tell an epic tale.

And it works because it's rooted in character. Amanda thinks that Nikita is still the wild, destructive creature she met in the beginning — as illuminated by a flashback to a feral Nikita that reveals how Amanda still sees her. But Nikita has grown and changed over the course of five seasons, and she's no longer that person. She listens to her friends and weighs the consequences of her actions instead of just bulldozing everything in her path.

Amanda thinks that by killing Ryan, she's unleashed the old Nikita, and the monster is back. Nikita's victory comes from proving that she really has changed, for good, and that she's both smarter and better than she used to be. As a result, she traps Amanda, frees the originals of the 54 doubles, and

It's hard not to contrast the Nikita finale with Matt Smith's Doctor Who finale a few days earlier — both have great character moments, and the Who episode has more sparkly dialogue, but Nikita manages to pull off surprises that are the result of character development and careful narrative groundwork. The best clever twists are the ones that are based on character and story, not so much endless rabbits coming out of endless hats.

So everybody gets a happy ending — even Ryan, who gets recognized on the CIA Wall of Awesome. Alex and Sam go off and do human rights stuff, with Sam as Alex's right-hand man and boyfriend. Birkhoff releases the code for ShadowNet and gets to be a hacker hero, talking about Open-Source Anarchy to some impressionable journalist. And Nikita and Michael elope, before leaving their mojitos to go off and stop some war in Ecuador where child soldiers are being forced to pick up machine guns.

I half expected the cloyingly happy ending to be revealed as another fakeout, but I guess these characters have earned it. Right?

Gingerbread Kaiju might be the most delicious game ever made S

I can't imagine anyone disliking Rogue Genius' Gingerbread Kaiju, because even if you're not into city-stomping strategy games or somehow hate giant monsters, eating tasty gingerbread cookies and piles of candy are literally part of the game's rules.

Gingerbread Kaiju is a game about giant monsters fighting each other while destroying Tokyo. But the monsters are made of gingerbread, and the city is made of candy. How's that for an elevator pitch?

This is the first game I've ever reviewed that has a recipe in the appendix. As the game's creators note, character creation in Gingerbread Kaiju is a bit more involved and time-consuming than it is for most games, since you have to actually bake your character from scratch. Luckily, the gingerbread recipe they included is simple and makes some very yummy dough.

Gingerbread Kaiju might be the most delicious game ever made S

Don't think that this is just a gag game — some serious thought has gone into the rules, which are not only fun to play, they include tons of references to classic kaiju film tropes. There's a card called Tiny Singing Women, and one called Psychic Kid. You can even attack enemy monsters with maser tanks, and everyone knows it ain't a kaiju party until the masers show up.

Gingerbread Kaiju might be the most delicious game ever made S

(Yes, that's Mothra in both forms). To lay out the game board, you separate a regular deck of 54 cards (counting two jokers) into two piles, one with all the 10s, Jacks, Queens, Kings, and Aces, one with the rest of the cards. The face cards are shuffled and laid out face down in a five by four grid. This represents the city of Tokyo, and each card represents a "ward" or area of the city. As your monster stomps its way through Tokyo, you flip over a card and check a chart to see what it is, how many buildings, people, and equipment you find there, and any other effects the ward has.

Gingerbread Kaiju might be the most delicious game ever made S

All of these game elements are represented by candy. You can use whatever you like — in our case, we made waffle cone trees for buildings and used Rolos for equipment, with jellybeans acting as people. When a monster stomps a part of a city, it gains control of these resources, which it can then spend to play karma cards. The karma cards represent military attacks, the arrival of invading aliens (in their cookie UFOs) and other effects.

When monsters meet, they bite each other or use other special attacks. Damage to an enemy monster and you destroy some of the resources it's gathered, in which case you eat them. Do enough damage and you'll destroy one of the monster's body parts, which you also eat (and which eliminates any special powers attached to that body part).

Gingerbread Kaiju might be the most delicious game ever made S

The game includes templates for eight different gingerbread kaiju, plus their in-game stats. These were all funny parodies of well-known kaiju, but I ended up calling all of them by their "real" names. It's easy to create your own kaiju as well. We had some cookie cutters, so we made UltraGinger MegaBread Man, Mecha-Squirrel, and Atomo the Giant Teddy Bear. There's a menu of special powers you can give out.

Gingerbread Kaiju might be the most delicious game ever made S

Of course, a big part of the fun is baking and decorating the kaiju. This could be a really fun family holiday activity. You'll want a variety of candies and frostings to give your kaiju some expression, and to show off their weaponry (I'm pretty proud of my version of Jet Jaguar's candy-cane arm cannons).

Gingerbread Kaiju might be the most delicious game ever made S

Gingerbread Kaiju is available in pdf form at DriveThruRPG. I'd love to see a deluxe version some day, with print-and-play cards to represent the city and the karma cards.

Lilly and Leon have enlisted the aid of their baby Oscar, along with cardboard, paper bags, massive amounts of tape, and myriad other household objects for their Cardboard Box Office, in which they make homespun recreations of scenes from their favorite movies.

Lilly and Leon look like they are having tons of fun in all of these shots, but it's Oscar's bemused expression that elevates their cardboard creativity into giggle-worthy scenes. onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com How to Stop being a Completist

How to Stop being a Completist

How do you know when it's time to stop being a completist? For me, the moment came in the mid-1990s, when I saw the above Doctor Who underpants for sale in a London shop — marked "ONLY WORN ONCE, NEVER WASHED." But everybody hits a wall sooner or later. Here's how to let go of needing to have a complete set.

At its root, the completist impulse is about feeling as though there's no point in collecting something unless you have every single item. Whether it's records, books, comics, toys, memorabilia or something else, the collection isn't worth having unless you have every item that belongs in the set. A set of N-1 is as worthless as an empty set.

Which is patently untrue — but also increasingly impossible to maintain. Even in the 1990s, you couldn't really hope to own every piece of Doctor Who memorabilia, including all of the 1960s flood of Dalek toys and the massive number of police boxes. And good luck keeping up with the massive surge in Who tcotchkes since the show came back in 2005.

But even if your form of completism consists of "owning every issue of a particular comic," or "owning the complete run of Philip K. Dick paperback first editions," you're still looking at major challenges of both storage space and expenditure. At some point, you start to run out of places to put everything, and the last stray bits are always the most expensive.

And with anything toy-related, it's always the worst — because there are always variant figures, and you have to keep them in the box, and they take up insane amounts of space.

So assuming you want to stop being a completist, how do you pull this off?

The main thing, it seems to me, is to answer the question: Is it worth collecting something if you don't have the complete set? And that, in turn, means finding other reasons why you might be collecting something beyond merely achieving some metaphysical sense of completion because you have all of the kinds.

There are plenty of reasons you would collect stuff. You could collect toys because you want to play with them — or because you like displaying them in a cool way. Likewise, you could keep the books that you've read and enjoyed the most, or maintain a stash of the most important comics.

One approach is to be selective, rather than comprehensive — collect only the things that are meaningful to you, personally. Instead of having every X-Men figure, collect the figures of your favorite X-character. Have a wall of Kitty Prydes. Pick the five or six action figures that express your personality, and display them on your mantelpiece.

Which reminds me — you can also treat it like interior décor. When I pared my action figures down to just a tiny handful, I suddenly gained the freedom to place them in cool poses on my desk, instead of having boxes and boxes. Even if you want to keep them in their original packaging, you can display them in awesome ways if each piece is individually meaningful or awesome.

And that's really the bottom line of not being a completist — it means doing more to cherish each individual piece in your collection, instead of only prizing the collection as a whole. That Gorn figure can be like a friendly totem, a boon companion in your hours of toil.

If anything, rejecting the completist impulse might make your collection more meaningful, not less. Because if you're always waiting for the far-off day when you finally have every single item in a category, you won't be spending as much time enjoying the collection you actually have. And a collection that's flawed (in the sense of not having everything) opens up more possibilities for enjoyment than one you have to keep pristine.

So don't fall prey to the need to own that one pair of previously worn, never washed Tom Baker trunks. You can cherish your collection even more if it's incomplete.

Fan comic Itty Bitty Orphan Black is Orphan Black's answer to Tiny Titans, imagining the early adventures of Sarah, her fellow clones, and their friends at Dyad Preschool, with plenty of cheeky references to the TV show (and spoilers).

There's only one issue of the comic up so far, but it sounds like there are more in the works. The creator has followed up the initial adventures of the clone children with illustrations of each character holding her favorite toy. Sarah, appropriately, gets a monkey:

Haven asks: Can you solve one curse with a complementary curse? S

As we get closer to discovering Audrey's proto-personality, Haven is hit by a Trouble that can't be solved with one of Audrey's classic pep talks. In fact, the only way to resolve the Trouble may be to give a Trouble to someone else.

If there was any question of William's utter indifference to humanity, this episode resolved it as William delivered the mutated form of a particularly deadly Trouble to a baby. The Harkers cause people to die whenever they cry, and even had a silver plate minted to commemorate their curse. Incidentally, we know that the Troubles aren't strictly patrilineal, but it does seem that certain curses are closely connected with family names. I know Haven isn't always consistent in its world building, but things like the Harker plate and the notion that certain families serve as guardians of Haven's Troubled make me feel that genealogy should be an enormous obsession in Haven, and I wish we saw more of it. Although we did get a nice familial reveal this episode. More on that later.

Anyhow, this crying Trouble is supposed to manifest in puberty, but William tweaks it so that Baby Harker picks it up in infancy, and short of cutting the kid's vocal cords, there is no way to keep a baby from ever crying. It seems that cutting the vocal cords wouldn't even do that much good here, since William is just going to keep passing the Harker Trouble on to the next youngest kid until he gets what he wants or all the pre-pubescent Harkers are dead or mute. And what William wants is for Audrey to give someone a brand-new Trouble. If Baby Harker's Trouble comes from the sound of his voice, William reasons, Audrey just needs to give someone a Trouble that will place the kid in a cone of silence.

Haven asks: Can you solve one curse with a complementary curse? S

Naturally, Duke and Nathan disagree about whether Audrey should go ahead and create this silence Trouble. Duke understands that William wants to chip away at the Audrey personality and let proto-Audrey come out to play. Plus, Duke understands what it's like to have a terrible power that can overwhelm you with terrible, wonderful feelings. Nathan, on the other hand, has a blind spot a mile wide when it comes to Audrey, and is sure she'll retain her personality no matter what Trouble-related sins she commits. (Odd given that Audrey vanished into Lexie for a few episodes this season, but okay.) As for Audrey, she can't see any other alternative, and so the Troubleshooters go searching for a good candidate for a silence Trouble.

I have to agree with Serenada that Haven ME Gloria Verrano has been a standout character this season, offering a refreshingly no-nonsense attitude in the face of the town's weirdness. And this episode we learn that she's a beneficiary of the Crocker Curse, living an unTroubled life because one of Duke's ancestors killed someone way up her family tree. She also happens to be Baby Harker's step-grandma, and she's got a beau (BSG's Michael Hogan!) who happens to be hard of hearing, which the Troubleshooters figure makes him the perfect candidate for a silence Trouble. When I watched this, I suspected that they got it backwards, that the silence Trouble would be better suited to someone who hates sound, and in fact, it appears that they did. Michael Hogan consents to taking on the Trouble, and instead of creating a cone of silence, he creates a horrible, cacophonous racket. More significantly, though, Audrey feels her primal self momentarily emerge when she delivers the Trouble, and she admits to Duke that she enjoyed that feeling of raw evil coursing through her. That means that the Troubleshooters will likely be facing off against Evil Audrey in the season finale.

Ben Harker, Baby Harker's father, is the second person this season to volunteer himself as a familial sacrifice to the Crocker Curse. The problem is, of course, that Duke no longer possesses the Crocker Curse. However, he does have Audrey and Audrey has six balls of Trouble-causing goo courtesy of William. I suspected that when Duke lost the Crocker Curse earlier in the season that he would have the opportunity to voluntarily reclaim it, and we end the episode with him standing bare-chested, ready for Audrey to re-Trouble him, an act that might well push her over the evil edge.

Haven asks: Can you solve one curse with a complementary curse? S

While the other Troubleshooters have been dealing with the killer crying baby, Jennifer has been on her own quest to discover the heart of Haven. In the process, we learn a little bit more about the Teagues (finally!). Vince's Guard tattoo is a birthmark, signaling him as a protector of Haven, and he can usually control its appearance and disappearance. And Dave, well, Dave is adopted, like Jennifer, adding yet another genealogical mystery to the pile. What does it mean that Dave was adopted by a family that protects Haven? It seems unlikely that any adoption in Haven is without significance. Anyway, using Vince's birthmark as a compass, the three discover the heart of Haven, a guard symbol carved into the basement floor beneath the lighthouse. The symbol includes the figures of four people at the points of the compass, indicating that four people are needed to summon the door that can expel William from Haven. The question is: Which four people can open the door? And what will they sacrifice when they do?

What If Katniss Didn't Have to Choose Between Peeta and Gale? onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com What If Katniss Didn't Have to Choose Between Peeta and Gale?

What If Katniss Didn't Have to Choose Between Peeta and Gale? S

NPR's Linda Holmes wrote a great article about the gender dynamics in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and concluded, "…you could argue that Katniss' conflict between Peeta and Gale is effectively a choice between a traditional Movie Girlfriend and a traditional Movie Boyfriend." I do love the way Holmes puts this. Gender, it seems, is not what one is, but what one does. Different characteristics we associate with masculinity and femininity are available to everyone, and when Peeta embodies some characteristics we usually see only in women's roles, Peeta becomes the Movie Girlfriend despite being a boy.

Though I find this compelling, I want to take a moment to focus on the other part of this sentence… the part when Holmes frames Katniss' relationship to Peeta and Gale as a "conflict between" and a "choice." I think that, in some ways, the requirement to choose one or the other forces Katniss' to, not only "choose" a boyfriend, but also to choose gender—for herself.

Depending on whether she's relating to Peeta or Gale, she is either someone who takes charge, is competent in survival, and protects her partner (traditionally the masculine role) or someone who lets another lead and nurtures instead of protects (the feminine role). As Candace West and Don Zimmerman suggested many years ago in their article "Doing Gender," we do gender in relationship to other people. It's a conversation or volley in which we're expected to play the part to the way others are doing gender.

When Katniss is with Peeta, she does a form of masculinity in relationship and reaction to his behavior and vice versa. Because Peeta "calls out" protection, Katniss steps up. When Gale calls out nurturing, she plays the part. In other words, not only is gender a "doing" rather than a "being," it is also an interactive process. Because Katniss is in relationship to both Peeta and Gale, and because each embodies and calls out different ways of doing gender, Katniss oscillates between being the "movie boyfriend" sometimes and the "movie girlfriend" other times and, it seems, she's facile and takes pleasure in doing all of it. If Katniss has to "choose" Peeta or Gale, she will have to give up doing gender in this splendid, and, dare I say, feminist and queer way in order to "fit" into her and her "girlfriend's" or "boyfriend's" relationship.

Now imagine a world in which Katniss wouldn't have to choose.

What if she could be in a relationship with Peeta and get her needs for being understood, nurtured, and protective while also getting her girl on with Gale? In other words, imagine a world without compulsory monogamy where having two or more boyfriends or girlfriends was possible.

I'm currently working on a book on monogamy and the queer potential for open and polyamorous relationships. I'm writing about the ways in which compulsory monogamy fits nicely into and perpetuates cultural ideas about masculinity and femininity and how different forms of non-monogamy might open up alternative ways of doing, not just relationships, but also gender.

Forcing Katniss to choose is forcing Katniss into monogamy, and as I suggested above, into doing gender to complement her partner. Victoria Robinson points out in her article, "My Baby Just Cares for Me," that monogamy compels women to invest too much time, energy, and resources into an individual man and limits their autonomy and relationships with others. What Robinson doesn't talk about is how it also limits women's range of how they might do gender in relationship to others.

It also limits men's range of doing gender in relationships. Wouldn't it be nice if Peeta and Gale never felt the pressure to be something they are not? Imagine how Peeta's and Gale's masculinities would have to be reconfigured to accommodate and accept each other?

Elisabeth Sheff, in her groundbreaking research on polyamorous people, found that both women and men in polyamorous relationships say that the men have to rethink their masculinities to be less possessive, women have room to be more assertive about their needs and desires, and men are more accommodating.

What this suggests is that monogamy doesn't just limit WHO you can do; it also limits WHAT you can do in terms of gender. Might I suggest that Katniss is such a well-rounded woman character precisely because she is polyamorous? She's not just the phallic girl with the gun… or bow in this case… or the damsel in distress. She's strong, vulnerable, capable, nurturing, and loyal, and we get to see all of it because she does gender differently with her boyfriends. And therein, I believe, is one way that polyamory has a queer and feminist potential. It can open up the field of doing gender within the context of relationships.

I don't know how her story ends, but I for one, am hoping that, if there is a happily-ever-after for Katniss, it's not because girl gets boy; its because girl gets both boys.

Mimi Schippers, PhD is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Tulane University. She is working on a book on the radical gender potential of polyamory. Her first book was Rockin' Out of the Box: Gender Maneuvering in Alternative Hard Rock. You can follow her at Marx in Drag.
