Those Star Trek Into Darkness deleted scenesdeleted scenes that were removed from the DVD/Blu-ray release in order to make you buy a second better (or decent) Collector's Edition release later are now available for your perusal. They fill more than a few of STiD's plotholes, including why Carol Marcus is suddenly British.

Personally, I kind of like Idina Menzel and Jimmy Fallon's all toy remix version of Frozen's "Let it Go" better than her Oscar performance.

Right around the 1.31 mark it all comes together and things start to sound like how I feel when I'm wine drunk. Which is wonderful. "Let It Go" all day, every day.

How to avoid (or embrace) arctic hysteria during this eternal winter

So it looks like if you live anywhere east of Nevada or north of Texas you will never see the sun again. Since you are now essentially living in the Arctic, you will need to get a new set of skills, especially if you want to avoid what's known as "arctic hysteria."

Arctic Hysteria

It seems that arctic hysteria is what happens to people in the American arctic during long winters. Another name for it is "piblokto" or "pibloktoq," but those two terms have for the most part been dropped. Explorers who first chronicled the madness said that "piblokto" was the local word for the outbursts, but no contemporary scholars can find any word like it, and most agree that it was either misheard or badly transcribed.

How to avoid (or embrace) arctic hysteria during this eternal winter

The disease is so creepy and dramatic that it's a wonder it hasn't made it to either the big or little screen. According to early sources it started out with soft singing and repeated clapping or striking of the hands to keep a beat. After a while the singing dissolved into crying, which spiraled up into screaming. The person affected tore off their own clothes, smashed everything indoors, and ran screaming into the snow. Eventually most sessions ended with a kind of seizure, followed by a near-catatonic state, after which the person nearly always recovered. If that sounds nice to you, be aware that some cases of arctic hysteria included coprophagia (i.e., poop-eating).

The Physical Causes

There are no recent cases of arctic hysteria, but so much has changed since the early 1800s that it's hard to pin down why. When looking for physical causes, most scientists turn to diet; vitamin C deficiency, vitamin D deficiency and calcium deficiency were tossed around as possible causes. While lack of vitamin C causes muscle spasms, and lack of calcium causes mood swings, neither causes screaming, the tearing of clothes, or running around. One study considered the idea that victims of arctic hysteria might have had an overdose of vitamin A. Liver, a main source of nutrition for those with plenty of meat, but little access to fruits or vegetables over the winter, can contain enough vitamin A to be toxic to humans. But, though an overdose of vitamin A yields a long list of symptoms, most of those symptoms are things like blurred vision, dizziness, and lethargy, which aren't likely to get someone to run around screaming. One symptom is irritability, which if it is meant to refer to the disease, is something of an understatement.

How to avoid (or embrace) arctic hysteria during this eternal winter S

Finally, there is simple hypothermia. Hypothermia makes people irrational. It leads to mood swings and, occasionally, violent behavior. The later stages of hypothermia make victims feel like they are burning with heat, even as they freeze. Many hypothermia victims are found stripped to their underwear, or completely naked. Any time people are exposed to the cold for long periods of time, hypothermia is a possibility.

Just to be safe, keep as warm as you can, eat a lot of produce, but stay away from liver.

The Psychological Causes

If the hysteria is psychological, rather than physical, there are discomfortingly few steps you can take. At first, doctors thought the arctic hysteria episodes were a cultural phenomenon; certainly, they were reactions to stress, but that reaction, just like our reactions, aren't entirely separated from the culture we live in. When explorers in the arctic also fell victim to arctic hysteria, things got more complicated. It's not unheard of for outsiders who have been exposed to a culture for a while to unconsciously adopt that culture's mentality. It does, however, imply that if you want to avoid running out into the snow naked, you would have been better off never reading this article.

How to avoid (or embrace) arctic hysteria during this eternal winter

One of the most intriguing analysis of the disease might explain why there is no word in any indigenous American language for what seems like a notable phenomenon. Arctic hysteria might not have started happening until enough explorers and Europeans made their way to the arctic and subarctic. Winters are never easy, and arctic hysteria might have been the reaction to a massive shift in circumstances. A culture that needed to marshal much of its resources and knowledge to get through a tough time was seeing those resources stripped away and that knowledge become irrelevant in a changing world. If that's the case, then probably the best way to stop yourself from succumbing to arctic hysteria is to stay away from the news, keep yourself from looking up anything that's trending on twitter, and just keep telling yourself the spring will come.

Which TV series from today will stand the test of time?

We're living through a pretty great age for television right now, but of all that really great TV, probably only a few series will ever be watched by future generations. Today, we want to know which ones those will be.

Shows like Star Trek: TOS and The Twilight Zone still draw in viewers about 50 years after their original airdates, and we're wondering which current shows will do the same. Tell us in the comments (with a picture or a clip, too, please) which TV shows you think people 50 years from now will still be queuing up in their holographic DVD players.

The Next Batman Game Is Arkham Knight onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com The Next Batman Game Is Arkham Knight

The Next Batman Game Is Arkham Knight UPDATE (10:36am): It's official—WB has announced Arkham Knight via this month's Game Informer. The game will feature a big open-world Gotham (supposedly bigger than Arkham City's); familiar Batman villains Scarecrow, Penguin, Two-Face, and Harley Quinn; and a driveable Batmobile.

Arkham Knight will be out for PC, Xbox One, and PS4 later this year.

The Next Batman Game Is Arkham Knight

Original story follows:

An early GAME UK retail leak has spoiled today's big Batman reveal: it's Batman: Arkham Knight, the final game in the Arkham series, and it'll be out this year for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Last week, GameStop started receiving marketing materials for Arkham Knight, which match up with the box art above. This will be the third Batman game by Rocksteady, the studio behind Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Last year's Arkham Origins was developed by WB Montreal.

Looks like the Batmobile is driveable, and Scarecrow will be the main villain. Seems like there's no current-gen version, which is good news, as they won't have to scale down anything to fit into old hardware.

Rumors have swirled about Rocksteady's next Batman game for quite some time now, after Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy accidentally mentioned that he was working on an Arkham game that was not Origins.

The heroes of Bitten are also its most horrible villains onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com The heroes of Bitten are also its most horrible villains

The heroes of Bitten are also its most horrible villains S

Okay. Either Bitten is a very subtle look at how fascists justify their oppression of others, or the show just has no clue that having its secondary protagonist castrating a man to death for choosing love over the law is supremely, supremely fucked.

Quick recap: Jeremy is poisoned, Elena searches for Zachary Cain's human galpal, gets caught in another super-obvious trap, where Marsten actually just asks her to stay out of the upcoming battle; after breaking Killwolf's arm and discovering the poison he dosed Jeremy with, Elena leaves unharmed. Clay tortures Zachary Cain for a while, and it ends very badly (see below). Nick goes off to erase his father's death and have meaningless sex while the Pack is still in incredible danger and its leader lays dying. And last and most certainly least Dullfriend sees Elena's clothes in the Wolf Vodka video, which he believes means she was cavorting naked in the woods somewhere.

All this is crap. There are two massively important points in "Prisoner": 1) Elena talk with Cain's gal pal, who reveals she not only knows about werewolves, but that Cain refused to bite her because he loved her too much to risk losing her. Note this is EXACTLY opposite of what ostensible hero Clay did when he bit Elena immediately upon Jeremy telling Clay she simply had to leave when he first brought her home.

And on the subject of Clay perhaps not being a hero: 2) After Elena confronts Clay with the news that Zachary Cain loves his shitty Helena Bonham Carter knock-off more than Clay apparently ever loved Elena — that he trusted her enough to be honest with her about himself, but also loved her so much he couldn't bite her despite how much she begged — Clay confronts Cain. And Cain confirms it all; he does love HBC, and the only reason he joined this Mutt uprising is because Pack law says that if she knows about werewolves she has to die, but he also didn't want to lie to her. He practically has to overthrow the Pack if he wanted to be honest with the woman he loves and continue to live with her. Oh, and then Clay castrates Zachary Cain to death.

What the fuck? And that's just for the reveal that Zachary Cain is nobler, romance-wise, than Clay. What the fucking fuck is my reaction to Clay castrating a character.

I'd mentioned before my confusion about Bitten's werewolf society, and someone mentioned that Mutts were just inherently less in control than Pack wolves. But how is that all mitigated by harassing every Mutt to prevent them settling down roots? How can they possibly be serene when the only true relationships the Pack allows are those within the Pack?

Sure, Cain and the Mutts have murdered people — Pete, Antonio, several innocents, and I'm not excusing that — but the Packs of the world apparently can kill Mutts for disobeying laws that they did not make, and cannot argue against. The Mutts here have killed a bunch of people, but have they killed more than Clay did in his job as enforcer?! And the enforcer before him, this Jimmy Koenig guy (who has been hired by the Mutts) was apparently much more violent than Clay. This sounds like fascism, plain and simple. "We're morally the best people in town, but we forbid you to love. Oh, and unless you follow all of our rules, we'll cast you out and prevent you from ever settling down, and if we see anybody breaking these rules we're going to kill you, and it'll be okay because we're in charge." Seriously, this is completely fucked up.

Even if you disagree about Pack vs. Mutt society, think about this: Zachary Cain, the ostensible bad guy, loved a woman so much that he was willing to die for her. Clay, the ostensible hero, loved a woman so much he was willing to kill her. Also, only one group is ripping people's dicks off. Honestly, of the two sides, I know which one I'd rather be on.

Back in 1880, astronomer Henry Draper required an entire 50 minutes to capture the first telescopic image of the Orion Nebula. Now, over 130 years later, Andrew Symes has accomplished the exact same thing using his iPhone — and he only needed a single second.

Canadian astrophotographer Andrew Symes does most of his photography through a telescope with his iPhone.

"[T]he quality of today's smartphone cameras makes it possible to take very respectable images of the Moon and planets through a telescope with your phone – but it takes some work," he writes at his blog.

You can check out his set-up and technique here, but in summary he uses an 8-inch telescope, the NightCap app for iPhone, a smartphone adapter, eyepiece filters, stacking and editing software, and whole lot of practice.

Of course, if you're NASA and you have the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) at your disposal, you can take pictures of the Orion Nebula that look a little like this:

Yes, beloved Japanese icon of kid-friendly cute Hello Kitty and legendary magazine of class, culture and nekkid ladies Playboy have teamed up to spawn an unholy merchandise mash-up. Assuming the complete cognitive dissonance hasn't caused you to pass out, here are a few of the items now available.

The Hello Kitty x Playboy line is available at Colette, the French clothing and accessories retailer, and according to Anime News Network includes "candy, mirrors, memo notes, lighters, mugs, Leica cameras, iPhone cases, socks, bowties, boxers, shirts, and more." They held a celebration for the line at the Crazy Horse cabaret in Paris, where the normally topless performers left their tops on during their pole-dancing routines, since, you know, Hello Kitty is a bit too kid-targeted to be associated with something so salacious as exposed breasts. EXCEPT FOR PLAYBOY, APPARENTLY.

Batman Vs. Superman

Talking to the Los Angeles Times, Zack Snyder raves about seeing the Batsuit and Superman suit together. And he defends this movie's controversial casting choices, like Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Ben Affleck as Batman, saying they fit with the way those characters are depicted in this movie's script:

There are two ways to think about it. We know the material. Unfortunately, the fans don't know the material. So, we're casting according to what's happening in the script. And we're hoping that leads to enough originality, enough perspective on what we're doing that you get something fresh and exciting. I understand the canon. I'm not crazy. I know what these characters need from a mythological standpoint. I think Jesse is going to be an amazing Lex.

And then he adds that he's aware of fan complaints, but that the fans aren't aware of what story he's trying to tell yet, because they haven't read the script. But more than that, he's trying to do something new and different:

[The movie] literally takes the "Man of Steel" and "Batman" universes and explodes them. You're not as tied to the mythology. In "Man of Steel," we had to create an origin story, a mythology, and there's a lot of energy into that, which we love doing. Don't get me wrong. But when you think about how fun it is too — now that you've got these characters — to now let 'em loose. That's fun!

There's already been a lot of debate over what Snyder means by taking these characters' universes and "exploding" them — and it seems like he's just saying that this movie is free to go in a new direction, because it's not retelling the origins of Superman or Batman and thus establishing the mythos. Rather, it's taking them as established heroes and then trying to put them in a brand new situation that "explodes" their universes. [Los Angeles Times via Slashfilm]

300: Rise of an Empire

Here's a video that goes into the background of the new characters in this "sidequel":

Fantastic Four

Writer Simon Kinberg tells Empire Magazine that it's at least possible the FF could cross over with the X-Men, the other characters which Fox also owns the rights to: "It's something we are interested in creating. If its possible for the movies to inform each other in ways that make the experience of each film more satisfying." [Comic Book Movie]

The Walking Dead

Norman Reedus commented on the possibility of a romance between Daryl and Beth:

Everyone pairs Beth up with Carl in this weird way and she's much older than Carl. He's looking for comics and she's looking for food. They're definitely not the same age. I can't tell you if there's going to be a romantic thing; we're not allowed to talk about that stuff. But never say never! She's a cute girl in the zombie apocalypse and Daryl could do much worse.

He also hinted that at least some of the characters would reunite soon:

That spoon [marked Washington D.C.] might be some sort of foreshadowing; you never know! Could they cross paths [with Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita]? Never say never. It's interesting to watch everybody lost. If you watch this episode and last week's closely, Daryl and Beth walk by that log and there's the bunnies and that's where Lizzie was killing a bunny. As we walk, there are little clues that they're not as far from everyone as they think they are. Carl leaves a candy wrapper; there are little things on the ground that show you that they're zigzagging without knowing they're zigzagging.

[The Hollywood Reporter]

Here are a promo and a sneak peek at episode 4.13, "Alone." [Coming Soon]

Game of Thrones

Here's a teaser for the next featurette, which is a look back at season three but also seems like it'll include some teases for where the characters are ending up.

Agents of SHIELD

Executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen describe Bill Paxton's character, Agent John Garrett:

Whedon: We can say that his character's a lot of fun. In just initially talking about the character, his name came up of dream choices to play someone with this sort of attitude about S.H.I.E.L.D., as a contrast to Coulson. Coulson's always been the company man with a dry sense of humor, whereas Garrett's a guy who never wanted to wear the tie, never wanted to be behind a desk. He's in the field because he likes being in the field. He likes blowing things up.

Tancharoen: He likes getting his hands dirty.

Whedon: Their friendship and back-and-forth has been a real pleasure to write, and seeing Paxton do it every day — we're having a blast.

They also hinted at the new characters that they're looking to use:

Tancharoen: If they're excited about Deathlok, then they should be excited about the things to come.

Whedon: We're in a weird spot, because if the character is big and cool enough, then they're probably planning a movie. [Laughs] We have a fairly large list of characters that we have at our disposal, and we plan on exploring all of them.

More at the link. [Comic Book Resources]

The Flash

A tweet from executive producer Andrew Kreisberg on Sunday revealed that the show's begun filming:

Wieder was gelernt: Vor zehn Jahren hat die NASA Schallwellen aus einem Schwarzen Loch im Perseus Cluster entdeckt. Der Sound des Schwarzen Lochs ist eine Billiarde mal tiefer, als es das menschliche Ohr wahrnehmen könnte. Galactic Subwoofer much.

Astronomers using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory have found, for the first time, sound waves from a supermassive black hole. The “note” is the deepest ever detected from any object in our Universe. The tremendous amounts of energy carried by these sound waves may solve a longstanding problem in astrophysics. […]

In musical terms, the pitch of the sound generated by the black hole translates into the note of B flat. But, a human would have no chance of hearing this cosmic performance because the note is 57 octaves lower than middle-C. For comparison, a typical piano contains only about seven octaves. At a frequency over a million billion times deeper than the limits of human hearing, this is the deepest note ever detected from an object in the Universe.

Lenticularization of an image allows the viewer to be presented with additional visual information within the same space, dependent on angle. Striped of lenticular sheets, we see that information altogether, almost theoretically identical to the Cubist idea of relativity presented as one. This project aims to appreciate the encrypted information as it is as well as decoded with additional media. Also, it aims to highlight and hopefully inspire the idea that there is more that can be done with the GIF medium – new tricks and methods can be applied to animation making, whether it is ‘flipping’ from one image to another, or added depth … Gif making can have additional visual narratives.

Take a wild trip to our nearest stellar neighbor in Proxima S

Set centuries from now on a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, Stephen Baxter's Proxima is an epic hard scifi story with no shortage of futuristic and cosmic wonders.

Often considered as the closest successor of Arthur C. Clarke, Baxter is a master of unabashedly hard science fiction, focused on epic visions of scientific wonders in a vast universe. Baxter is one of my top favorite science fiction writers (Clarke has always been the top one).

Take a wild trip to our nearest stellar neighbor in Proxima

"The universe is full of wonder," writes Baxter in a tribute to Clarke. "[T]hrough the nuts-and-bolts technologies of spacecraft and radio telescopes we reach out for such wonder. Many authors have struggled to express these great and contradictory perspectives. But none, surely, have succeeded so well as Arthur Clarke."

Like Clarke, Baxter is often accused of preferring cold, imaginative Big Ideas to warm, fuzzy human emotions, or something like that, you know, "male reductionist SF" and all that pathetic nonsense. I don't think Big Ideas are cold – on the contrary, the visions of Clarke and Baxter give me beautiful, powerful "cosmic" emotions, and this is the main reason why I read science fiction. I know today's people in this world already, and I read science fiction because I want to know future people and alien things in other worlds. I don't think Baxter's human characters are cold or under-developed. Rather, they are not over-developed – their inner emotions don't take the focus away from the momentous unfolding of planetary and cosmic events, and they stick to their role of tiny motes in a vast, mysterious, awesome universe. But aren't we all?

Proxima published in September 2013, is one of Baxter's best novel so far. It will be followed by a sequel, Ultima.

The Earth and the solar system are in a permanent state of cold war, divided in zones of UN and Chinese influence. The inner solar system, within the orbit of the Earth, is controlled by the UN, while the outer solar system, besides some run down UN colonies on Mars, is controlled by China. The UN political system is "benevolently authoritarian" (whatever that means – I don't think benevolent and authoritarian are compatible). The world is recovering, or so they say, from the excesses of the free-wheeling, wasteful "Heroic Generation" of the 21-22th centuries.

Apparently, the Heroic Generation damaged the environment with unchecked energy consumption and ambitious planetary engineering schemes, and started to develop artificial intelligences too smart to be safe. In the oh-so-benevolent society of the following century, where order is kept by armed thugs in uniform (they are called "Peacekeepers"), the sons are often punished for the sins of their fathers.

The Chinese political system is probably equally authoritarian, but they are philosophical about it. A Chinese officer explains:

We have philosophers exploring ways of ensuring individual freedom within a tightly constrained collective system… [instead] of excessive individual freedom kept in check by excessive policing.

An important difference between Baxter and Clarke is that Baxter's outlook is less optimistic. Both authors develop super technologies and take humanity to the stars, but while Clarke's future is essentially a linear progression, Baxter's future is much more troubled, with major roadblocks and setbacks, suffering and catastrophic events. I am afraid that Baxter's future seems more plausible.

Yuri, a refugee from the time of the Heroic Generation, was cryonically frozen by his parents in the late 21th century. Apparently his parents – we don't learn much about them, but there are hints that they may have been powerful persons – wanted to ship their young son to the future to protect him from some kind of retribution. But the scheme doesn't work out too well: when Yuri wakes up in the 22th century, he is first sent to an outpost of the UN on Mars, halfway between a bare-bone colony and a prison, and then placed with other involuntary colonists on a starship en route to the red dwarf Proxima Centauri, the closest star.

The "Ad Astra" starship is powered by "kernels," mysterious objects recently discovered by the UN's International Space Fleet (ISF) buried in the rock of Mercury, perhaps the products of alien technology. The kernels, programmable wormholes, can extract energy from remote places – for example from high-energy astrophysical events – and take the starship to Proxima Centauri in only a few years at near-light speed.

Another starship en route to Proxima, launched a few years before "Ad Astra" by a light sail, has a crew of one – Angelia, an advanced artificial intelligence running on a programmable matter substrate. These things are kind of illegal, but of course the state doesn't have to follow its own rules. At launch, Angelia assumes the shape of a sail, hundred kilometers wide with a thickness of only a few microns. In interstellar space, Angelia reconfigures herself as a long thin needle pointing to Proxima, to reduce the chance of high-speed collision, and as an extra safety measure she splits her consciousness into a myriad of small programmable matter droplets distributed along the needle. But she doesn't know that the mission plan requires the sacrifice of most copies of herself for communications and deceleration. The treatment of Angelia seems very ruthless, but the rights of AIs are not high on anyone's agenda.

Before launch, in a Mercury facility dedicated to kernel physics and interstellar launches, Angelia assumed the shape of a young woman and became a friend of 11 years old Stephanie (she prefers Stef), the daughter of a project scientist, a typically "cold" Baxter heroine (needless to say, I totally love Stef) who will dedicate her life to studying the kernels.

Stef wasn't too clear what a 'kernel' was. But she was interested in it all, the different kinds of ships, the experimental engineering she'd glimpsed at her father's laboratories back home on the outskirts of Seattle, the rumours of these energy-rich kernels being brought up from deep mines on Mercury… she'd heard hints that these kernels they'd found on Mercury, and which were going to power the I-One, were actually much more exotic than anything her father was working on.

The novel alternates between the story of Yuri and his fellow involuntary colonists marooned on the habitable planet Proxima C (they will call it "Per Ardua") under the dim light of Proxima Centauri, and a cold war solar system with a growing tension between the UN, excluded from the resources of the outer system, and China, without access to the kernels.

Stef, now a top kernel physics researcher in a laboratory run by the ISF on the far side of the Moon, becomes involved in interplanetary intrigue as a science adviser to UN politicians and powerful movers and shakers – billionaire Sir Michael King and Earthshine, an advanced artificial intelligence emerged at the time of the Heroic Generation, now too influential and powerful to be contained by the state. Earthshine is unique among the three "Core AIs," because he originated as a human mind upload.

There was concern that the AIs, being non-human after all and running on an entirely different substrate, would not share humanity's concern for its own well-being, and would pursue different agendas. So a new approach to emulating human-level AI was tried out. Volunteers were sought – or rather, the hyper-rich of the Heroic Generation competed for places… They opened up my head and modelled the hundred billion neurones, the quadrillion synapses, in a vast software suite that was itself state-of-the-art. It was done by nanoprobes crawling through my skull… On some level I remain human enough.

Though Earthshine is actually a combination of nine different human uploads, he feels partly human and retains part of the self of his main original. There are hints, missed by other reviews that I have seen, that the identity of Earthshine's original may be very relevant to the story, and I look forward to finding out in Ultima.

Meanwhile among the stars, Yuri and the other colonists learn how to survive on the alien Per Ardua world, under the perpetual light of Proxima Centauri (the planet is tidally locked to the star), surrounded by strange, photosynthetic, intelligent life forms halfway between plants and animals. Once the colonists are left on the planet in scattered little groups, internal fights and murders start immediately, a Lord of the Flies drama among the stars. Yuri's group is assisted by a "colonisation unit" (ColU), a rover-like "swiss knife" sentient robot and one of the nicest characters in the story. The colonists are supposed to reproduce and populate the planet before the Chinese come in force. Yuri and Mardina, the only other survivor in their group, grudgingly comply and give birth to a baby girl, Beth, before finding and joining other groups of colonists.

The epic struggle of the colonists, the vivid and unforgettable scenery of Per Ardua, both on the day-side of the planet and under the stars on the frozen night-side, and the strange native life and intelligent aliens, are top class science fiction that would fill a dedicated book. In Proxima they share a relatively compact novel with equally compelling visions of a – too believable – future solar system, and super science. I am sure many readers will impatiently wait for the sequel Ultima – I certainly do.

Back in the solar system, Stef is sent to Mercury to study a recently discovered alien device, buried hundreds of kilometres deep. The strange, impossible "Hatch," powered by mysterious space-time engineering, seems able to open conduits to other places, other times, and alternate realities.

Evidently we are dealing with some distortion of space and time. There may be some kind of machinery in the mouth of the pit – exotic matter of some kind, perhaps, or a tremendous gravitational engine.

The discovery is momentous, but the solar system is on the brink of war. On Earth, the Moon, Mercury, the awesome Obelisk city, capital of the Chinese Mars, Ceres, the hub of China's space development in the asteroid belt, and aboard spaceships, UN and Chinese scientists and diplomats assisted by Earthshine and the Core AIs work frantically to avoid war, while the military prepare for the worst.

When another Hatch is found on Per Ardua, a stellar gateway between the solar system and Proxima Centauri is open. It permits to travel back and forth at the speed of light, but also to export to the stars the upcoming war in the solar system. There are indication that immensely old and powerful cosmic intelligences – masters of space and time – may be involved. For this, and many other deliberately loose ends, we will have to wait for the sequel Ultima. I can't wait!

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com First trailer for Harmontown shows the making of Dan Harmon's podcast

After Dan Harmon was fired off of the show that he created, Community, he created the podcast Harmontown. And soon enough, this wacky bunch of excessively honest podcasters went on the road. Thank goodness someone was smart enough to film it.

Here's what happened on the road with Dan Harmon, back when he had little to nothing to lose. It's kind of intense, but we're glad Harmontown exists. The full-length documentary will premiere this year at SXSW.

The Star Trek Into Darkness Deleted Scenes You Didn't See on the DVD S

You might recall that the Star Trek Into Darkness DVD/Blu-ray release was somewhat... umm, feature-light. Among other things, it didn't include any deleted scenes — but now those scenes have turned up, and you can read descriptions of them.

According to Trekcore, If you purchased copies of Star Trek Into Darkness through the xBox video store, then you can use the xBox SmartGlass second-screen app to view a ton of deleted scenes that were prepared for the DVD/Blu-ray release. (And then removed from the DVD, in an apparent effort to get you to buy the film more than once.)

Trekcore doesn't have the actual clips of those deleted scenes — and they appear not to be online anywhere else, either — but they've posted incredibly detailed descriptions of the deleted scenes here and here.

Among other things, there's a longer version of Kirk's discussion with Pike after Kirk is reprimanded. Carol Marcus explains the reason for her random British accent. Uhura has a much longer conversation with the Klingons. There's a longer fight scene on Kronos. There's also a sequence which we glimpsed in one trailer, where Kirk falsifies his log of the mission at the start of the film, in front of his bridge crew. Kirk watches Pike die. And at the end of the film, Kirk meets the little girl who was saved by Khan's blood — and they share a moment, seemingly indicating that they have a bond in common.

Also, there's a scene from the start of the movie where "John Harrison" calls Admiral Marcus with a message: "He said you'd know why he did this." And according to the film's editors, Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey, on the commentary track, the sequence was cut to keep the Admiral's involvement more of a secret.

And for everyone who felt that Scotty got aboard the Killerprise too easily, there's a whole sequence where he talks himself on board:

SCOTTY

This is... shuttle Copernicus. I have the...

He thinks hard, clearly not used to this kind of improvisation.

SCOTTY

...hull plating and the coffee cells for the food synthesizers.

His face bunches up in anticipation for getting caught.

STATION COMM

Shuttle Copernicus, we do not have you on our registry.

He regroups, and tries a more direct attack.

SCOTTY

What the hell do you think I'm doin' here? Huh? You think I just happened upon an enormous box and thought I'd take a wee look? No! I've got a job to do! I can go back, if you like. Just give me your name, I'll tell 'em who sent me.

A long pause. He's sure the game is up.

STATION COMM

Supply shuttles, you're clear to enter. You too, Copernicus.

Scientists just revived a 30,000 year-old frozen virus in Siberia S

In what's either the beginning of a Michael Crichton movie or a scientific breakthrough, researchers have successfully revived a 30,000-year-old virus buried deep in the permafrosts of Siberia, the largest virus ever discovered.

The virus, known as Pithovirus sibericum, was revived from samples from ancient permafrost, which the researchers used to infect amoebas in their lab. Fortunately, they say that the virus is not infectious to animals or humans. Which is good, because in addition to being large, it is also apparently incredibly tough.

Via National Geographic:

Giant viruses are not just bigger but are hardier than others as well, said the researchers. This hardiness, along with a favorable environment, likely helped the newly discovered specimen stay intact for the thousands of years that it did. Viruses are often destroyed or rendered inactive by a number of factors, including light and biochemical degradation. "Among known viruses, the giant viruses tend to be very tough, almost impossible to break open," said Claverie and Abergel. "Special environments such as deep ocean sediments and permafrost are very good preservers of microbes [and viruses] because they are cold, anoxic [lacking oxygen], and in the dark."

Changes in global diet could make famines more likely onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

Changes in global diet could make famines more likely S

Over the past half-century, a few staple foods like rice and soybeans have come to dominate people's diets all over the world. And this could spell disaster.

A new research paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences explores how local staple crops like cereals and roots have been superseded by "energy-dense foods" like palm oil. "Wheat is a major staple in 97.4 percent of countries and rice in 90.8 percent; soybean has become significant to 74.3 percent of countries," the researchers say in a release about the study. Not only does this mean our diets are less diverse, and less healthy, but it could mean famines are on the horizons.

The problem is that when the world depends on a few staple crops for nourishment, the health of those crops are synonymous with world food security. And if there is a drought, or pests, we're more vulnerable to famines if we're only growing one or two kinds of staple crops. It would essentially be like the Irish potato famine writ large. One plant disease could take out the world's soybean supply, just the way a potato disease robbed Ireland of its export crops and food supply in the mid-nineteenth century.

Luigi Guarino, a study co-author and senior scientist at the Global Crop Diversity Trust, said in a release:

Another danger of a more homogeneous global food basket is that it makes agriculture more vulnerable to major threats like drought, insect pests and diseases, which are likely to become worse in many parts of the world as a result of climate change. As the global population rises and the pressure increases on our global food system, so does our dependence on the global crops and production systems that feed us. The price of failure of any of these crops will become very high.
