onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Simulations show how complex bodies evolve in challenging environments

As Auerbach and Bongard discovered, organisms have little choice but to adapt when environments get tricky. Their control group was placed on a flat, high-friction surface, while the experimental bots were placed on high-friction surfaces with rows of ice. Over the course of many mutations and selection, the winning body-type was one that could reach into the gaps between ice bars and pull across — meaning that they had to evolve more advanced appendages. Fascinatingly, complex environments instigated rapid evolution — a phenomenon that evolutionary biologist Stephen J. Gould would have referred to as punctuated equilibrium.

"By evolving virtual organisms for locomotion in a variety of environments, we are able to demonstrate that selecting for locomotion causes more complex morphologies to evolve than would be expected solely due to random chance," wrote the authors in the study.

Indeed, as the researchers discovered, the more challenging the environment, the more costly is it to an organism, and by costly they mean the imperative to evolve more complex body plans. This is what's referred to as the "arrow of complexity" hypothesis — the idea that the most complex outcomes of open-ended evolutionary systems tend to increase in complexity over evolutionary time. Now, this is not as straightforward as it may appear; many incredibly simple organisms (like single-celled organisms) continue to exist in massive numbers (showing that a tendency towards complexity is not the rule, but probably the exception), and that some animals even evolved to lose their morphological complexity.

But as this new study clearly demonstrates, environmental niches matter — and they matter a lot.

Interestingly, this work was partly funded by DARPA. The advanced-concepts research wing is likely looking at this as a way to "evolve" more effective robots.

The proposal to put a bikes-only highway high over London

Will London soon have a bikes-only highway rising high over the city? Well, maybe. The plans have been released, but whether it will actually be built is up in the air.

The Guardian explains the plan for the the 136 mile bike-path, dubbed SkyCycle by Norman Foster, the architect behind it:

SkyCycle proposes a network of elevated bike paths hoisted aloft above railway lines, allowing you to zip through town blissfully liberated from the roads. The project, which has the backing of Network Rail and Transport for London, would see over 220km of car-free routes installed above London's suburban rail network, suspended on pylons above the tracks and accessed at over 200 entrance points. At up to 15 metres wide, each of the ten routes would accommodate 12,000 cyclists per hour and improve journey times by up to 29 minutes, according to the designers.

The path would be built above the existing rail-lines, using the platforms over railway stations as guideposts. So what's the hold-up? Unsurprisingly, it's money. The Guardian also raises the sad specter of California's own attempt at an aerial bike path, attempted over 100 years ago.

The early bike-path of the future, designed to link Pasadena and Los Angeles with a cyclists-exclusive wooden roadway, never managed to get enough funding to break through. At a cost of about $220 million to build, SkyCycle could take awhile to get off the ground as well.

The "screw you" effect and other perils of informed volunteers

It's important to keep experimental subjects in the dark; this isn't hard when they're rats, but can be challenging when they're humans. An informed human being can do a lot of damage to your experiment. A misinformed one can do even more.

Demand Characteristics

An ideal experiment calls for the experimenter to disappear. Subjects are meant to respond to the conditions of an experiment as if they weren't being watched. Sadly, with the current state of consent laws, subjects have to know they are being watched, so the next best thing, experimentally speaking, is to give them no clue as to why they're being watched. Since the experimenter is exactly as human as the subject, that's not an easy task. Researchers have a goal in mind when they conduct experiments, and they can convey that goal through their voice, their actions, and the conditions they set up during the experiment. The conglomeration of all the cues they give to let the subject in on the hypothesis of the experiment is called the demand characteristics of the experiment.

The "screw you" effect and other perils of informed volunteers

It's surprisingly easy to let people know what an experiment is meant to test. One study on demand characteristics involved setting up a dummy study. (Yes, a study-within-a-study, Inception style.) The "experimenters" were asked to give the subjects tasks which required them to think of a physical object. In one section of the study the subjects were asked to visualize the object, and in one section they worked with the physical object in front of them. Meanwhile, half the experimenters were given one hypothesis for the study — that subjects with the physical object would do better. The other half were given the hypothesis that people would do better when visualizing the object. The experiment was real, the subjects uncoached, but the two groups of experimenters got opposite results. The subjects did better when the experimenter expected them to do better. When reviewing recordings of the procedure, the actual researchers saw that the experimenters gave slower and clearer instructions for the part of the study during which they expected the participants would do better. The participant, given clearer instructions, more time to think about them, and probably sensing the emphasis of the experimenter, did better.

The Good Subject Effect Versus the Screw You Effect

Once a subject guesses what the psychology experiment is all about, there are all kinds of ways they can skew results. Naturally, they want to make themselves look good. In one study examining the effects of demand characteristics, two groups were asked to measure the relative tapping speed of both of their index fingers. One of the groups was told that students at Yale didn't have much of a gap in performance between their dominant and non-dominant hands. Guess which group ended up with similar tapping speeds for their left and right hand?

Generally, the subject who guess demand characteristics will separate into two groups. One group wants to help the researcher out. They want to be part of a successful experiment. They will try to play to the researcher's expectations or hopes. This "good subject" effect is also found by people conducting surveys, who will often notice that people will tell them whatever it seems like they want to hear.

The "screw you" effect and other perils of informed volunteers S

On the other side of the coin is the "screw you" effect; it happens when people get discouraged or angry. They try to rile up the experimenter by screwing up their experiment. The Milgram Experiment — during which participants were made to think they were shocking someone to death — quite possibly led to a few cases of the screw you effect. They weren't particularly kind to human nature. One man, asked why he walked out rather than shock someone to death, said he knew he was being "lied to" by the experimenter and wasn't going to stand for it. This, surprisingly, makes the experiment even darker — what we might think shows a conscience is actually a tantrum.

Overall, though, there is one thing that's more likely to produce the scew you effect than any other — dislike of the experimenter. The more obnoxious (or just different) the experimenter was from the subject, the more the subject decided to try to wreck the experimenter's hopes and dreams. So clearly, if you're going to do human research and want to publish a lot of successful studies, try to be nice to your participants. You'll still get crap data, but you'll get publishable crap data.

There's no way to adequately describe this new trailer for Donnie Yen's The Monkey King, so you're just going to have to watch it. Just don't confuse it with Stephen Chow's goofier cinematic take on the Chinese legend, Journey to the West. Because when it saw this Monkey King trailer, it curled up into a fetal position and wept.

Frogs are not okay with being slowly boiled alive, metaphors be damned

Many people have heard the old metaphor about the frog; if you put one in boiling water it will hop out, but if you gradually increase the temperature of the water it will let itself be boiled. It's meant to warn us about slowly developing dangers in addition to obvious ones.

As metaphors go, a boiling frog works. Step into the realm of reality and the metaphor breaks down. Dr. Victor Hutchison, at the University of Oklahoma, dispelled the myth when he studied frogs' reaction to temperature changes in water. He followed the procedure outlined for a proper frog-boiling; put a frog in cold water, and gradually warmed the water up. (He stopped well before the boiling point.) The frogs most definitely did jump out when the water got too warm for them. So that aspect of the metaphor breaks down.

What about the other aspect? If we want to get really gruesome, we can discuss what happens when you throw a frog into boiling water. No one has done this as an experiment, but scientists are pretty sure they know what will happen if someone did. Getting dropped into boiling water would be serious trouble for a human, and we have nice thick skin and quite large legs. The surface of the body parts that were exposed to the water would be damaged or destroyed, but we'd have enough muscle mass to get out of the water, provided the edge of the container was close and we didn't go into shock. A frog is not nearly as big as we are. The boiling water would destroy its muscles to the point where it could not hop out and would die in the water.

So the real story should be the exact reverse of the "fact" that's so often quoted. Put a frog in some cold water and heat it up slowly, and the frog will hop out. Drop a frog in boiling water and it will be boiled alive. Is it me, or does that sound even scarier?

Try not to get too excited about these Agent Carter TV series rumors onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Try not to get too excited about these Agent Carter TV series rumors

Please take this with an iceberg-sized grain of salt: The MirrorThe Mirror claims that Hayley Atwell has signed the lead role and is moving to Los Angeles to film that rumored Agent Carter TV series to premiere later this year. As much as I would love this to be true, I'm pretty sure it isn't.

See, The Mirror says that Atwell is moving to L.A. for six full months to film an entire season of the show, which is where my doubt begins. Marvel isn't going to make an entire season of a TV series before finding a channel to put it on; they'd make a pilot first, and that really doesn't require a six-month commitment. Furthermore, studios don't make shows like this on the sly — given the number of people involved in making virtually any modern TV series, they couldn't if they wanted to. The announcement of an Agent Carter series should make the trades well before Hayley Atwell would need to pack up her UHaul boxes.

But say the show is automatically going to ABC, so it's already found a home, and say The Mirror has somehow gotten the scoop before Hollywood. The biggest problem is Agents of SHIELD isn't doing so hot, so I don't know why ABC would want a show starring a lesser-known Marvel movie-verse character right now.I could easily see the show going somewhere like Netflix, but Marvel has already announced four TV series that aren't even due until 2015. So again, I don't know how or why Marvel would be trying to sneak an Agent Carter series in 2014 without some kind of announcement first.

Maybe The Mirror has their finger on the pulse of this single theoretical TV series, and we're going to get an official announcement in the new few days. Maybe Disney told ABC they're going to show as many Marvel series as Disney wants them to, ratings be damned. I'll be delighted to be wrong here. But as the moment, I don't think I am.

The U.S. Northeast's gigantic snow storm as seen from space

The NOAA has released a satellite photo of the massive storm that's currently wreaking havoc across the U.S. northeast. It's a bad one folks, with snow accumulation reaching one to two feet in some areas and temperatures dropping as low as -13F (-25C).

Some 2,300 flights have already been cancelled, with hundreds more likely to come. New York's JFK airport is closed for snow removal and all public schools are closed. Both New York and New Jersey are currently in a state of emergency.

From the NOAA:

Two low pressure systems will converge over the Mid-Atlantic Region Thursday resulting in heavy snowfall potential and dangerously cold temperatures from the Midwest through the central Appalachians and into New England into Friday. Heaviest amounts of snow, upwards of 10-12 inches, are expected for coastal southern New England, and along the Great Lakes. Some areas of coastal Massachusetts could see 12-15 inches of snowfall. In addition to heavy snowfall, north to northeast winds gusting to 35 to 50 mph could cause blizzard conditions for eastern Long Island and coastal Massachusetts. Wind chill temperatures well below 0 F are forecast for much of the Central and Eastern U.S. on Friday. Wind chills below -30 F are expected for portions of northern New England. This image from the GOES-13 satellite on January 2, 2014 (17:45 UTC) shows the two weather systems (moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and cold air from Canada) moving across the U.S.

A Captain America: Winter Soldier writer explains why Cap has no character arc of his own. The Walking Dead has a new poster. And new Dracula photos show the show getting its corpse on. Plus, new photos from Arrow and Tomorrow People. Spoilers now!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Co-writer Christopher Markus explained that Captain America doesn't have an arc in which he changes, but that his stories are about how he affects the world around him:

What helps us get past the pious Boy Scout that he could turn into is that he doesn't really want to be this guy. He would prefer to be Steve Rogers just walking down the street, helping people sometimes. … He's kind of the still centre and things happen around him and are influenced by him. It's interesting in this movie, for instance, to watch his relationship with Black Widow, who of course has a very different outlook.

It can make it difficult with executives who often want arcs. It's very difficult not to sound lazy when you go, 'Well, he doesn't really have an arc.'

In the same Empire story, co-director Anthony Russo expanded on that idea, explaining that what gives the sequel its edge isn't Steve, but the story's subject matter:

What made '70s thrillers interesting is that it was a very complicated time. We were peeling back the curtain with Watergate and realizing how corrupt the system was. Now, again with the proliferation of social media, you can blow the whistle on the NSA and it can be round the world in 30 seconds. And we have the morality of drones. Is it right to preemptively use them to kill suspected terrorists prior to any sort of trial? So the times we're living in are even more complex.

Marvel

The next Marvel One-Shot will be coming, of course, on the Thor: The Dark World Blu-Ray, and it'll be called "All Hail the King." All that we know is that it's 16 minutes and 14 seconds long. However, if the name's any indication (and not some sort of redirect/bluff) a good guess is that it involves the plot point revealed at the end of The Dark World, which showed Loki taking the throne of Asgard while disguised as Odin. Below's the synopsis for January 15th's "Blast Radius," and go here for more photos from that episode. Seeing Oliver shake hands with Blood and try to save him is pretty hilarious, given what we know. It's shades of last year's saving of Malcolm Merlyn.

ARROW HUNTS DOWN SHRAPNEL — Oliver must tackle a new threat to the city when bombs start to go off in Starling City. Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) discovers the person setting them off is Mark Sheffner (guest star Sean Maher), a man who goes by the nickname Shrapnel. Arrow discovers Shrapnel's next target is Sebastian Blood's (guest star Kevin Alejandro) "Unity Rally" and tries to talk the alderman out of hosting it, but he refuses. Arrow sets off to stop the bombing, but Shrapnel tricks him and traps him in a bomb-laced antique store where he is unable to move without setting off the device. While Felicity helps Oliver, Diggle (David Ramsey) races to the plaza to find the bomb before it goes off. Meanwhile, Roy (Colton Haynes) continues to hide his new strength from Thea (Willa Holland) but, after she witnesses his super strength in action at the rally, she demands answers. Laurel's (Katie Cassidy) suspicions about Sebastian grow stronger once she learns that he grew up with Cyrus Gold, the man who killed Lance's (Paul Blackthorne) partner. After Donner (guest Star Dylan Bruce) refuses to help her investigate, she turns to Arrow (Stephen Amell) for help. Rob Hardy directed the episode written by Jake Coburn & Keto Shimizu (#210).

Her hair appointments are simply written as “hair” and usually took place at 8.30am or 9am. They more than likely involved styling using Carmen heated rollers. The brand, popular in the 1980s, was Thatcher’s favourite.

In 1982, she had to borrow a set from an embassy employee during a trip to China, while in 1978, ahead of a visit to Iran, Sir Anthony Parsons, Britain’s ambassador, was distracted from the imminent Islamic revolution by a request from Mrs Thatcher for him to arrange a “good local hairdresser” to call before dinner. “He should bring Carmen rollers,” the note added.

3000 (!) chinesische Cops haben heute morgen das Kaff Boshe gestürmt, dabei drei Tonnen (!) Meth und nicht weniger als 23 Tonnen an Chemikalien konfisziert. Massive!

The Yangcheng Evening News, a local newspaper, said the raid involved 3,000 police officers who seized three tonnes of methamphetamine in the raid. Photos showed paramilitary officers in camouflage uniforms and holding rifles stood over large boxes filled with large packets of what is presumably crystal meth.

Boshe’s villagers have resisted Chinese authorities for years, blockading the village entrance with motorcycles when word of a raid spread. The villagers would brandish replica AK-47s, lay nailboards on the road and hurl stones and homemade grenades at officers, said the paper.

It's the first trailer for the Veronica Mars movie, and things are looking damn good. Of course there's a ten-year high school reunion, and of course bad boy Logan is involved in a murder scandal. And Veronica is kicking ass.

Everybody is in this trailer — all your favorite characters from the show, including ones played by actors who've gone on to have major careers in other shows and in film. Even Veronica's wide-strap shoulder bag is back. Nice. Looks like all those people who funded this flick on Kickstarter will be proud.

The movie will be out in March.

Dogs align their bodies along a North-South axis when they poop S

Ever wonder why dogs need to get themselves into just the right position to do their business? As it turns out, dogs align their body axis according to Earth's magnetic field when they squat to poop—a behavior that changes when the magnetic field is unstable. But why do they do it?

The results of this recently published paper from Frontiers in Zoology sound goofy, but the takeaway is all in the title, "Dogs are sensitive to small variations of the Earth's magnetic field." The researchers measured the direction of the body axis of 70 different dogs while they were off-leash during 1,893 acts of defecation and 5,582 acts of urination over a two-year period. They found that, under calm magnetic field conditions, dogs prefer to orient their bodies along the North-South axis when they poop. However, this behavior did not occur during unstable magnetic field conditions, and the best predictor for this change of behavior was the rate of change of magnetic declination. This means that the dogs are responding to changes in the polarity of the magnetic field rather than changes in intensity. It's that change in behavior that has the authors of this paper particularly excited, since it's the first time, according to the paper, that magnetic sensitivity has been proven in dogs and that a predictable behavioral reaction from natural magnetic field fluctuations has been unambiguously observed in mammals.

The question that this inevitably invites is: why on Earth do dogs do this? The paper notes that it's not just that dogs prefer to align themselves along the North-South axis; they also seem to avoid the East-West axis when they poop, although it's not clear whether they do so consciously. The researchers suggest that perhaps, when dogs poop, they are also taking the opportunity to orient themselves:

An answer may lie in the biological meaning of the behavior: if dogs would use a visual (radical-pair based) magnetic map to aid general orientation in space as has been proposed for rodents [32], they might have the need to center/calibrate the map now and then with regard to landmarks or a magnetic reference. Aligning the map and the view towards North (or South) facilitates reading the map. Furthermore, calibration only makes sense when the reference is stable and reliable. We might think of this the same way as a human is stopping during a hike to read a map. When the map is blurred or the reference (perceived magnetic direction) is dispersed or moving due to magnetic disturbances, however, calibration is impossible. In the case of the dogs it thus would totally make sense to not pay attention to magnetic body alignment any more under conditions of a shifting magnetic field.

The first Thor movie gave us a dazzling view of Asgard as well as Jotunheim, home of the frost giants — but there was supposed to be a third realm in there: the home of the Rock Trolls. Check out some Rock Troll concept art by artist Wil Rees.

Update: Apparently this isn't a separate realm, after all, but is part of Asgard, where the Rock Trolls live until they're banished to Vanaheim.

These images of the Rock Trolls' home come via Film Sketchr. More at the link. [Wil Rees]
