Abandoned Santa villages are latest casualties of the War on Christmas S

We've now entered the 2nd decade of the War on Christmas, making this the longest made-up war in modern times. Elves and reindeer wander the barren wastelands in diasporic exile, searching for a home. Meanwhile, these abandoned Santa villages serve as grim reminders of this brutal, unending conflict.

Santa's Village (Lake Arrowhead, California)

From May 28th, 1955 to March 1st, 1998, Santa's Village in Skyforest, California by Lake Arrowhead was once the most popular theme park in southern California. It opened a month before Disneyland, but the years have not been so kind to this kitschy theme park. Now it lays abandoned, lonely and forgotten. Like all those Yuletide wishes you made under the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree.

Santa Claus Acres (Golden Valley, Arizona)

Santa Claus Acres in Golden Valley, Arizona was once a bastion of good cheer to travelers along historic Route 66. The town even had the support of science fiction writer Robert Heinlein who wrote a short story about the place in Cliff and Colonies, in which "describes a diet-shattering gourmet feast served by Mrs. Claus, in reality a Mrs. Douglas, who ran The Santa Claus Inn restaurant in the 1940s." Santa Claus Acres began declining in popularity during the 1970s, and ultimately abandoned. Today it's a desolate, vandalized and lonely ghost town. If you venture down the Mother Road, be sure to stop off at this quirky roadside wonder.

Disaster interrupts an alien mission to rescue the human race S

The Fiah's Exodus mission is a noble one, to remove sentient races from their doomed planet and relocate them to a safer preserve. But Ethma and Endi's assignment on Earth is troubled from the start, though their crew of accidental human stowaways is the least of their problems when the entire Exodus mission takes a tragic turn.

Ran and Cory Brown's The End seems at first like an alien comedy of errors when the stern and cranky Ethma and the sweet but inexperienced Endi of the Axca first arrive on Earth, especially when their data-gathering mission takes them straight to a science fiction convention in the heart of Ottawa. Thanks to a broken cloaking device, an assortment of humans wanders onboard, including a TV actor, an angry college kid, a convention security official, a cosplayer thinking about hanging up her wig, and a young family going through an emotional rough patch.

But this isn't just a story about humans learning to get along with their semi-unwitting alien abductors. The Browns have built up a much, much larger universe beyond the convention doors, and the size and stakes of that universe become clear when the Exodus fleet is dealt a devastating blow from an unknown source. Suddenly, Ethma and Endi's priorities have radically changed; they must run on home with their human captives in tow and not all those captives are ready to follow along quietly.

And as the Browns expand their world, they deepen our understanding of the characters and the larger conflicts they face. Although there is a familiar alien bazaar scene (and they render alien speech in a particularly delightful way), it's given just enough of a twist that, when we see human-shaped characters, it's far more unnerving than seeing aliens with more beast-like forms. And while the main focus might be on the crew of the Axca, the camera occasionally shifts back to Earth and to other alien crews, so that we understand that there are individuals with personalities, whims, and desires involved in these worlds-spanning disputes before we thoroughly understand the nature of the disputes themselves. The Browns can be guilty of the occasional info-dump (as in a recent arc), but for the most part, they show a restrained hand, letting us get to know their characters on an intimate level before pulling back the curtain on the larger story.

As they slowly pull back that curtain, it seems that while The End is a large-scale, large-stakes alien conflict story, it's also a potentially frightening one from the human perspective. While one alien group has a rather indifferent view of humans, viewing them as they would view any sentient race whose planet is in peril, the other takes an intense interest in humanity, perhaps due to a shared distant history or a bizarre biological quirk. The question is whether humanity is prepared for such attention, whether they will be absorbed as pawns for an alien culture, destroyed, or if, with the help of allies, retain their independence, even if it means enjoying that independence somewhere other than Earth.

[The End]

This weekend in the world of cartoons we have an interesting selection for your viewing pleasure. Earlier in this week we were greeted by a visit from Root Beer Guy on Adventure Time, while this weekend an episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic airs that I'm sure many of you will identify with.

TMNT is off this week. As always - minor spoilers ahead!

Steven Universe - "Bubble Buddies"

Steven is surrounded by ladies in his new position as a member of Crystal Gems, but this week he finds a special someone he really likes and traps her in a crystal bubble. Normal guy stuff.

Regular Show - "The Heart of a Stuntman"

Timmy's tenth birthday is this week, leading Mordecai and Rigby to venture out and get their stuntman licenses when the one scheduled for 'lil Tim's party cancels at the last minute. Check out the clip for a montage of their journey through stunt school.

Adventure Time - "Root Beer Guy"

This episode opens with a look at the relatively mundane life of Root Beer Guy, telemarketer and denizen of the Candy Kingdom. His normal life gets crazy when his pastime of writing hard-boiled fiction is interrupted by Finn and Jake kidnapping Princess Bubblegum.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - "Daring Don't"

Rainbow Dash is whipped into a Deathly Hallows level of frenzy awaiting the new release from A.K. Yearling. When the author has a few unexpected delays, RD and friends visit to lend a hand. Who will Rainbow Dash visit next? George R. R. Martin? Patrick Rothfuss?

Avengers Assemble - "Planet Doom"

Doctor Doom uses a combination of time travel and cunning to rip the Avengers from the history books and install himself as Ruler of Earth. This alternate universe episode features some nice nods to Marvel's recent past, including the Defenders and one of Peter Parker's aliases from Slingers.

Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. - "The Venom Inside"

Climate Model of Middle Earth onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Climate Model of Middle Earth

„Radagast the Brown“ hat mit den Supercomputern der Uni Bristol ein Klima-Modell von Mittelerde erstellt. Das Paper gibt es scheinbar auch in Elvish und in Zwergensprache, es hat sich allerdings herausgestellt, dass das nur Augenwischerei mit Fonts und keine echte Übersetzung ist. Das Klimamodell selbst wurde allerdings anscheinend tatsächlich berechnet.

Ever wondered what the weather and climate was like in Middle Earth, the land of hobbits, dwarves, elves and orcs, from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings? Climate scientists from the University of Bristol, UK have used a climate model, similar to those used in the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, to simulate and investigate the climate of Middle Earth.

The results show that The Shire, where the hobbit Bilbo Baggins lived before he was whisked away on his unexpected adventure described in The Hobbit, had a climate very similar to that of Lincolnshire and Leicestershire in the UK. However, Mordor, the land of the evil Sauron, had a climate similar to that of Los Angeles and western Texas.

Therapy, Vampire Diaries-Style! onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Therapy, Vampire Diaries-Style!

Is this clip the most ludicrous thing you've ever seen, or just one of the most ludicrous things? It's Stefan's therapy session from last night's Vampire Diaries, and it's Exhibit A for why I still love this show.

Spoilers ahead...

So last night's episode was about both Salvatore brothers confronting their past traumas, and in the core of those traumas there was a little nugget of guilt or maybe self-loathing. Stefan is still freaked out about the summer he spent in the bottom of a quarry locked in a safe, drowning over and over — so Caroline gets the bright idea to lock him in that safe again. That doesn't work, until he's locked in there with Katherine, his former-vampire ex-lover, who points out the obvious: Stefan is really traumatized about being abandoned by the people he loved, who left him to drown over and over, plus Elena dumping him. This catharsis leads to humping, as so many good catharses do.

Love the whole notion that exposure therapy plus sexytimes = cured of trauma.

Oh, and a core part of Stefan's "therapy," as seen above, is reasserting control — he gets better at least in part because he won't kill Katherine when she's presenting her vulnerable throat to him. He needs to overcome his inner monster at least as much as he needs to feel safe again.

Meanwhile, Damon (and soon Elena) are locked in cells by the Augustine society, which experiments on vampires. And we explore Damon's five years of suffering at their hands in the mid-1950s — culminating in Damon and his friend Enzo cooking up an escape scheme that half worked.

Half, because Damon left Enzo to die. And also, Damon's overcomplicated revenge on his captors left a massive trail of bodies, and a single traumatized heir to the Tortureford family in every generation — with the latest generation being Aaron Tortureford, who is horrified at his family's past but also at Damon's murder of everybody ever. So Damon's trauma winds up being very much tied up with him being a monster. And his past screw-ups definitely come back to haunt him — in the form of Aaron, but also Enzo, who is (not surprisingly) not actually dead.

I bet you wish your therapy sessions were this much bloody sexy fun!

First scientific paper to be released in Elvish, Dwarvish and English S

University of Bristol climate scientist Dan Lunt, writing under the name Radagast the Brown, released a paper today where he used powerful supercomputers to model the climate of Middle Earth. So of course he had to release it in Dwarvish, Elvish and English. He made some fascinating scientific observations, too.

Lunt, who works in the University of Bristol's Cabot Institute, used the same kinds of climate modeling software used by scientists who contribute to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. This software harnesses the powers of supercomputers to extrapolate about future climate changes, based on millions of years of data from Earth's past.

For Middle Earth, Lunt chose to model the mythical land by extrapolating from a map of the topography and batheymetry of Arda's northern hemisphere during the Second Age (Middle Earth is part of Arda). He notes that this map came from Rivendell records, and that he had little data on the Third Age when Lord of the Rings takes place, so he assumed that the climates of the Second Age and Third Age were similar. He then assigned heights to the mountains, as well as depths to the oceans, and used those to calculate what the likely winds, ground cover, and temperatures would be.

As you can see in the image at the top of this post, Lunt compared Middle Earth to today's world as well as the Late Cretaceous, 100-66 million years ago, when dinosaurs ruled the planet.

First scientific paper to be released in Elvish, Dwarvish and English

According to Ian Randall, writing at Science:

The Middle-earth model (pictured, showing predicted ground coverage: with grass in light green, trees in darker green, desert in yellow, and ice in white) reveals that the Shire—home to the Hobbits—would enjoy weather much like England's East Midlands, with an average temperature of 7°C and about 61 cm of rainfall each year. An epic journey to Mount Doom, however, would see a shift in climate, with the subtropical Mordor region being more like Los Angeles or western Texas.

The topic is fanciful, and Lunt did the calculations in his spare time. Neverheless, as Lunt said in a release, it may help people understand how climate modeling software works:

This work is a bit of fun, but it does have a serious side. A core part of our work here in Bristol involves using state-of-the-art climate models to simulate and understand the past climate of our Earth. By comparing our results to evidence of past climate change, for example from tree rings, ice cores, and ancient fossils of plants and animals, we can validate the climate models, and gain confidence in the accuracy of their predictions of future climate.

Normally, of course, we would have maps of our Earth, rather than Middle Earth. But the process would be the same. Scientists would compare today's climate to a previous era (like the Cretaceous) to see what has changed and why. The software Lunt works with can help us puzzle out the relationships between inputs and outputs in the great machine we call Earth. The better we understand the environmental inputs (like carbon) that result in outputs of, say, higher temperatures and more acidic oceans, the better able we'll be to prevent unwanted climate changes in the future.

Lunt's colleague, environmental scientist Richard Pancot said:

Because climate models are based on fundamental scientific processes, they are able not only to simulate the climate of the modern Earth, but can also be easily adapted to simulate any planet, real or imagined, so long as the underlying continental positions and heights, and ocean depths are known.

And that's exactly what Lunt has done here.

Read Lunt's paper in English, Elvish, or Dwarvish.

UPDATE: Readers have discovered that these papers are not in actual Elvish or Dwarvish, but instead in silly fonts designed to look like those languages. We are not amused.

After Disney swallowed up Marvel and consumed Lucasfilm, we thought they'd be prying the Indiana Jones franchise from Paramount's cold dead hands. But not so — Paramount has signed over the rights. Congratulations Disney, you now own everything we love.

Variety is reporting that this new deal gives Disney distribution and marketing rights to all future Indiana Jones films. Meanwhile, Paramount will keep their distribution rights for the first four Indiana Jones films and will have "financial participation" on all future films as well.

Which means, Disney is going to make an Indiana Jones 5 movie and soon, while Harrison Ford still has the use of his knees. This all kind of makes sense when you think about the recent rumors that Ford wouldn't agree to reprise his role as Han Solo in the new Star Wars franchise until Disney and Lucasfilm guaranteed him another Indiana part. Well played, sir. In return we offer you this deal, we're not paying for your next Indiana movie until you kick Shia LaBeouf the hell out of it.

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com These genetically-modified bees make concrete instead of honey

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

Gizmodo's 3D Printing Week, a collaborative project with GE that comes to a close this evening, would only be partially complete without a look at the use of animals as living 3D printers. They are sentient printheads, we might say: biological sources of material, whether it's silk and honey or, as we'l see below, plastic and even concrete.

Animal Printheads

Spiders, silkworms, and honeybees are already 3D printers—in a sense that bioengineering is rapidly making more than just a poetic metaphor. These creatures are organic examples of depositional manufacturing, and they have been domesticated and used, throughout human history, for specific creative ends.

Just this week, for example, we've learned that, given a special diet, silkworms can produce colored silk, readymade for use in textiles, and other examples are not hard to come by. Indeed, using bees as 3D printers is already something of an accepted artistic process.

Perhaps the most famous recent exploration of the animal-as-3D-printer concept was done earlier this year for, of all things, a publicity stunt by Dewar's, in which the company "3D printed" a bottle of Dewar's using nothing but specially shaped and cultivated beehives.

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

The pictures tell the tale clearly enough: starting with a large glass bottle, used as a mold in which the bees could create new hives, the process ended with the removal of the glass and the revealing of a complete, 3D-printed hive.

As Dewar's joked, it was 3B-printed.

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

Or, for example, take the Silk Pavilion, another recent project you've probably seen, in which researchers at MIT, led by Neri Oxman, 3D-printed a room-sized dome using carefully guided silkworms as living printheads.

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

The Silk Pavilion was an architectural experiment in which, the designers explain, "the silkworm itself [was] deployed as a biological printer in the creation of a secondary structure," the primary structure being a labyrinthine, continuous thread wrapped around a metal scaffold.

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

At that point, Oxman's group adds, "A swarm of 6,500 silkworms was positioned at the bottom rim of the scaffold spinning flat non-woven silk patches as they locally reinforced the gaps across CNC-deposited silk fibers."

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

The "CNSilk" method resulted in this gossamer, woven dome that looks more like a cloud than a building.

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

What both of these examples demonstrate, despite the fact that one is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek media ploy by an alcohol company, is that animal bodies can, in fact, be guided, disciplined, or otherwise regulated to produce large-scale structures, from objects to whole buildings.

In both cases, however, the animals are simply producing what they would normally—that is, naturally—produce: silk and honey. Things get substantially more interesting, on the other hand, when we look at slightly more exotic biological materials.

Bee Plastic

Several years ago, materials scientist Debbie Chachra at New England's Olin College of Engineering began researching what's known as "bee plastic": a cellophane-like biopolymer produced by a species native to New England called Colletes inaequalis.

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers

These bees create cocoon-like structures in the soil—seen in the photo, above—using a special gland unique to the species; the resulting, non-fossil-fuel-based cellophane-like polymer not only resists biodegradation, it also survives the temperate extremes of New England, from the region's sweltering summers to its subzero winter storms.

More intriguingly, however, the bee plastic "doesn't come from petroleum," Chachra explained to me for a 2011 end-of-year article in Wired UK. "The bees are pretty much just eating pollen and producing this plastic," she continued, "and we're trying to understand how they do it."

Bee plastic, Chachra justifiably speculates, could perhaps someday be used to manufacture everything from office supplies to car bumpers, acting as an oil-free alternative to the plastics we use today and perhaps kickstarting a homegrown bio-industry for New England, where the species thrives.

But even this, of course, is a vision of animal-based manufacturing that relies on the already-existent excretions of living creatures. Could we—putting aside for now the moral and ethical implications simply to discuss the material possibilities—perhaps genetically modify bees, silkworms, spiders, and so on to produce substantially more robust biopolymers, something not just strong enough to resist biodegrading but that could be produced and used on an industrial scale?

Not unlike Dewar's bee-printed bottle, then, augmented cousins of Chachra's plastic-producing bees could print whole car bodies, kitchen counters, architectural parts, and other everyday products, literally 3D-printing the world of tomorrow.

This becomes far more strange and promising, if we move to materials like concrete.

Concrete Honey

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

For an ongoing collaborative project, New York-based architect John Becker and I have been looking at the possibility of using bees that have been genetically modified to print concrete as architectural printheads.

Initially inspired by a somewhat willful misreading of a project published by the CCA in Montréal under the title "Bees Make Concrete Honey," we've imagined and illustrated a series of science-fictional scenarios in which a new bee species, called Apis caementicium, could be deployed throughout the city to repair statues and fix architectural ornament, and even to produce whole, free-standing structures, such as cathedrals.

Concrete-Printing Bees And Other Living 3D Printers S

Like the process followed for the Dewar's bottle, seen above, the bees would be given an initial form to work within. Then, buzzing away inside this mold or cost, and additively depositing the ingredients for bio-concrete on the walls, frames, or structures they're attached to, the bees could 3D-print new architectural forms into existence.

This includes, for example, in the image below, the iconic lions outside the New York Public Library, damaged by exposure and human contact, but now fixed from within by concrete bees.

But, of course, tidy plots such as these invariably spin out of control and things don't go as planned.

Feral Printers

The bees, of course, eventually escape, first just a few here and there, but then an upstart colony takes hold. Within a few years, as they reproduce and thrive, and as the colonies grow, the city becomes aware of the scale of the problem: rogue 3D-printing bees have infested various parts of the city.

They print where they shouldn't print and, without the direction of carefully made formwork and molds, what they print often makes no sense.

They print on signs and phone poles; they take over parks and gardens, where they print strange forms on flowers.

Tiny fragments of concrete can be seen on plants and door frames, beneath cars and on chain-link fences, coiling up and consuming the sides of structures where they were never meant to be, like kudzu; and, of course, strange bee bodies are found now and again, little concrete-laden corpses in grass of backyards, in parking lots, and on rooftops.

Striking creatures, augmented and extraordinary, dot the very city that they've also beautified and improved, where they once printed church steeples and apartment ornament, where they fixed cracked walls, statues, and sidewalks.

Of course, other, more adventurous or simply disoriented bees make their way much further, hitching inadvertent rides in the holds of ships and airplanes, mistakenly joining other hives then shipped around the world.

The bees are soon found in Europe, China, and, especially—for reasons never yet clear to materials scientists—India, where, in the image taken below, they can be seen adding unnecessary ornamentation to a temple in Rajasthan. Swarming and uncountable, they busily speck the outside of the building with bulbous and tumid additions no architect would ever have planned for.

As the bees speciate yet further, and their concrete itself mutates—in some cases, so hard it can only be removed by the toughest drills and demolition equipment, other times more like a slow-drying sandstone incapable of achieving any structure at all—this experiment in animal printheads, these living 3D printers producing architecture and industrial objects, comes to end.

A Bee Amidst The Machines

Designers learn from the, in retrospect, obvious mistakes that led to these feral printers, turning back to their more easily controlled inorganic factories and industrial processes. But, even then, on quiet spring days, there can still be a tiny buzzing sound that comes from the machine, and whole assembly lines come shuddering to a halt. Inside, just doing what it's used to—what we made it do—a tiny 3D-printing bee has taken root, leaving errant clumps of concrete wherever it alights.
