Next, the researchers decided to discover how the hornworms were utilizing the nicotine. In a previous study, they found that a gene that's normally expressed in the caterpillar's midgut, CYP6B46, isn't as active in hornworms that are fed plants with suppressed nicotine production. This seemed a good place to start, so they created N. attenuata plants that are able to silence the caterpillar's CYP6B46 gene. Sure enough, caterpillars with the silenced gene became very attractive to spiders.

Further work showed that the gene is able to take some of the nicotine in the caterpillar's midgut and transport it to the hemolymph (its blood). Nicotine, Baldwin explained, works by attacking the acetylcholine receptor, which "drives the neuromuscular function of all animals on the planet." What's more, there are no acetylcholine receptors that are resistant to nicotine, meaning that caterpillars aren't necessarily able to eat tobacco because their receptors are resistant to


nicotine. "The way the caterpillar handles the nicotine is that it poops it out," he said. The work with the CYP6B46 gene shows that the hornworm doesn't poop out all of the nicotine — it transports 0.65 percent of the nicotine it ingests into its blood.

But how does blood laced with nicotine help the caterpillar? The researchers figured that M. sexta must exhale the nicotine through their spiracles, which are small respiratory holes they breathe through — the nicotine warns the spiders that the caterpillar is toxic. To see if this was true, "we glued little nicotine trapping devices on the spiracles and then took them off after the spider caught the caterpillar," Baldwin said. The devices showed that the tobacco hornworms were puffing out nicotine from their spiracles when the spiders attacked. "Normally, it would work as a type of toxic halitosis, or bad breath."


Interestingly, this defense doesn't work for all predators. The scientists discovered that the big-eyed bug Geocoris pallens, another major predator in the N. attenuata field, wasn't deterred by the caterpillar's nicotine-rich breath. Baldwin thinks this may be the case because the bugs only feed on the hornworms' hemolymph, which has very low levels of nicotine. The spiders, on the other hand, eat the caterpillar's nicotine-loaded gut. Still, the study is the first documented case of a "toxic bad breath" and an animal being able to use its exhalation as a signal that it has eaten something poisonous, he said.


The research also highlights how important field studies are for determining what individual genes do. "We've discovered the function of the gene CYP6B46 in the caterpillar because of a spider in the field," Baldwin said. "This shows that nature is an important laboratory for discovering gene function."

The first official image from The Imitation Game has been released, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as computer scientist, mathematician, and father of artificial intelligence Alan Turing.


The movie is set during World War II, when Turing helped crack the Enigma code. A discovery which greatly impacted the length of conflict. This image which was released via the film's twitter site, was most likely released due to the news that Turing has received a posthumous pardon from Queen Elizabeth II, "for his conviction in 1952 on charges of homosexuality, at the time a criminal offense in Britain."


Here's hoping The Imitation Game will educate the masses on that historic injustice, as well as the pivotal role Turing played in shaping the world we all live in.

The first picture of the Earth and its moon in a single frame


Earlier this month, NASA released this unprecedented clip of the Moon orbiting Earth. The footage reminded me of another image captured more than thirty years ago by Voyager 1 when it was still just 7.25-million miles from Earth: the first photo to feature Earth and its moon, in their entirety, in the same frame.

In the picture are eastern Asia, the western Pacific Ocean and part of the Arctic. Voyager 1 was directly above Mt. Everest (on the night side of the planet at 25 degrees north latitude) when the picture was taken. The photo was made from three images taken through color filters, then processed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Image Processing Lab. Because the Earth is many times brighter than the Moon, the Moon was artificially brightened by a factor of three relative to the Earth by computer enhancement so that both bodies would show clearly in the print. Voyager 2 was launched Aug. 20, 1977, followed by Voyager 1 on Sept. 5, 1977, en route to encounters at Jupiter in 1979 and Saturn in 1980 and 1981. JPL manages the Voyager mission for NASA.



Voyager 1, of course, captured another famous photo of Earth and the Moon in 1990, this time from 3.7-billion miles away. The Moon, while technically within the frame, isn't really visible; but then what do you expect when our planet appears as little more than a Pale Blue Dot:

Voyager 1 finally left the solar system earlier this year – but not before having the cameras turned on it. Back in September, NASA released this view of the probe (then over 11-billion miles away) as "seen" from Earth – its faint radio signals a whitish-blue glow, detectable by some of Earth's most powerful observatories:

It may not look anything like Avatar's Pandora or Jedi's Endor, but if verified, it could be the first moon ever discovered outside our solar system. Located 1,800 light years away, it's a large moon orbiting a planet four times the size of Jupiter. But strangely, the duo isn't even remotely close to a star.

To make the discovery, David Bennett of the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, and colleagues used a technique that's not often used to detect exoplanets. It's called gravitational microlensing, an optical phenomenon where light emanating from a distant object gets warped and distended by the gravity of another nearby object. This warping can create a magnification effect, making celestial objects, like planets and galaxies, easier to find. And now, owing to this latest discovery, it can also help us find moons as well.


Back in 2011, Bennett's team spotted a microlensing event that amplified the brightness of a star by a factor of 70 times. An hour later they observed a second event, this one much smaller. The astronomers interpreted this as a large object passing in front of the star, followed by a smaller one.


They posited two explanations: Either it's a moon orbiting a planet, or it's a brown dwarf (a kind of planet that doesn't have quite what it takes to be a star) orbited by a Neptune-mass planet. But after performing Bayesian calculations on the data, the astronomers had to admit that the "most likely" explanation is the planet/moon hypothesis.


If the system consists of a planet and a moon, however, it's a strange one, indeed. First, the pair is adrift in space. The star that was used to detect the microlensing event is far, far away. Now, rogue planets do exist, but if confirmed this would be the first one discovered to have a moon; and in fact, this pair might actually be two planets that were ejected from a tumultuous star system, likely a binary system. That said, this observation would seem to add credence to the brown dwarf theory — but the hard data suggests otherwise.


Second, the moon, which is about half the size of Earth (which is huge by moon standards), orbits its host planet at an extreme distance — about 20 million kilometers out. Contrast this with Jupiter's largest moon, Ganymede, which is about 1 million kilometers out.


Sadly, we may never learn the truth. Gravitational microlensing doesn't lend itself very well for detecting repeat events.

Building on this instructional from Maker Mama, datavisualization expert John Nelson has created a template you can use to craft your very own paper globe ornaments out of satellite imagery from NASA's Visible Earth team (the same imagery used to create this animation of a breathing Earth).


According to Nelson, you'll need a printer, a stapler, some scissors, and a copy of his 20-panel (!) globe template. Yes, 20 Panels means a lot of cutting, but the end result looks pretty sweet.

We've been waiting forever to hear more about Transcendence, the new movie directed by Wally Pfister, best known as Christopher Nolan's cinematographer. Transcendence has been shrouded in mystery — until now. And holy hell, its official synopsis sounds ambitious.


Here's the synopsis that was just released by Warner Bros. (in its 2014 preview kit):



Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him.


However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should.


Their worst fears are realized as Will's thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.



We absolutely, positively want to see Johnny Depp giving rise to an all-knowing, omnipresent entity! Sounds like a blast. Transcendence will be released on April 18th, 2014.

People have been passing around this video for the past few days because it captures an astonishing phenomenon. The newly-built Freedom Tower emits a long, flute-like moaning sound. It's eerie and it's real. But no, it's not the ghosts of 9/11.


The Freedom Tower, built on the site of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, is in fact a massive aeolian harp, also known as a wind harp. As wind rushes past the metal bars at its top, those bars vibrate, create sound waves, and result in the long, mournful notes you hear in this video. Observers also heard similar sounds coming from the Freedom Tower during Hurricane Sandy, for the same reason.


Over at Doubtful News, Sharon Hill writes:



Stuff like this happens and is likely responsible for many of the mystery "sky noises" that have been hyped over the past two years . . . Please learn some simple acoustics. The wind against objects makes noise – it causes vibrations that generate sound. This sound can be eerie, beautiful or disturbing. But it's natural, not supernatural. I fear that this structure at Ground Zero will forever be associated with spirits of the dead and predict the building will perpetually be "haunted" . . .



Sadly, Hill is probably right. The sounds emitted by the building, already associated with so much trauma, will probably give rise to legends of haunting. Which is doubly sad, because the beautiful sounds of a massive aeolian harp are a tribute to the power of nature and science — as well as a lovely way to memorialize those we lost.
