Crowdfund a kung fu time-travel comedy pitting vikings against Nazis

It's a quieter week on the crowdfunding front, but there's one project that looks like particular fun: Kung Fury, a goofball short film inspired by 1980s cop movies, in which a renegade cop travels back in time to kill Hitler, a.k.a. Kung Führer.

Kung Fury writer and director David Sandberg has already shot most of the 30-minute film, and you can watch the trailer above. The team is raising money to complete post-production and hire a poster artist. The movie will be released for free online, but if you want to give Sandberg and his team a financial helping hand, they're offering a digital copy of the script for a $10 pledge and a download of the finished film for a $20 pledge.

Love steampunk, but want to see a more culturally diverse range of stories? You can back an upcoming anthology with some top-notch contributors. You might also want to back a web series based on Legend of Grimrock, a puzzle RPG about archaeologists battling the Third Reich, or a comic in which the Axis Powers have weaponized mythological creatures.

Top image from Dead Century.

Steampunk stories tend to be in America and Britain (or fantasy settings that evoke those countries), but Steampunk World seeks to open up a wider world of alternate technology, gathering stories set in other regions. Jay Lake, Nisi Shawl, Ken Liu, Lucy A. Snyder, and tons of other writers will be sharing their steampunk tales from a different point of view. For a $10 pledge, backers can get a digital copy of the anthology, and for $20, they can get the paperback edition.

The folks behind the fabulous Fallout: Nuka Break are back with a new licensed web series set in the world of the game Legend of Grimrock. They are planning to develop a series of episodes that will connect into a feature-length film. For a $25 pledge, backers can nab an HD download of the finished film. For a $30 pledge, they'll receive both the film and Grimrock 2.

Dead Century is a lovely-looking piece of media that's part puzzle RPG and part comic, that, in the great Indiana Jones tradition, pits archaeologists against Nazis:

You command a small team of archaeologists as they try to stay one step ahead of Third Reich scientists in piecing together an ancient mystery from the dawn of human civilization.

The first installment of the game is available for $0.99 on iTunes, and the team is offering the full game for a $10 pledge.

Kyle Winters writes and Amanda Goebel illustrates this WWII comic in which the Axis Powers figure out how to weaponize creatures of folklore and myth. To combat the supernatural threat, General Patton forms a secret army unit. Backers can get the Operation Penumbra ebook for a $10 pledge and the print edition for a $25 pledge.

This week's Concept Art Writing Prompt takes us under the sea, where a small cottage sits in shadow near a bright and bubbly city. What stories happen in this underwater divide?

This landscape was created by Sam Nielson and is titled "Grandfather's House" (via r/ImaginarySeascapes). Nielson includes his own bit of flash fiction with the piece:

Grandfather often warns Peter about the dangers of ambition and curiosity, but the lure of the ruined city is too much for Peter.

See if you can come up with your own short story inspired by Nielson's digital painting and post it in the comments.

The Mysterious Origins of Cat Domestication in China S

Researchers studying a 5,000-year-old archaeological site in China have discovered that wildcats first came to ancient villages to feed on rodents, which were stealing farmers' grains. The research shows, for the first time, how the process of cat domestication started.

Pathways of Domestication

Over the years, there have been a number of different thoughts as to how domestication of various animals came about. Some people proposed that early domestication involved a kind of master-subject relationship, where humans guided wild animals to domestication through selective breeding and other techniques. On the opposite end of the spectrum, one theory holds that some domesticates manipulated humans into relationships that benefited the animals, at, possibly, the expense of people.

"Now, we look at it as being much more of a mutualistic relationship between humans and animals," said Fiona Marshall, an anthropologist at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. That is, both human and animal reap some kind of benefit through their increasingly co-dependent interactions. But not all relationships begin the same way — there are three different "pathways" to domestication.

Animals such as sheep, goat and cattle became domesticated through the prey pathway. They began as prey for hunters, but when their numbers dwindled, people implemented smarter, more selective hunting practices and likely protected the animals from other predators. Over time, these game management strategies transformed into herding and eventually controlled breeding. By comparison, the directed pathway is seen as a kind of intentional domestication, where people selected animals to domesticate for things such as milk, wool and transportation.

Species most frequently became domesticated through the commensal pathway, Marshall told io9. Here, animals, including dogs, pigs and chicken, came to human settlements to eat refuse or prey on other animals. At some point, the animals developed closer bonds with humans, which eventually grew into a domestic relationship. Researchers have reasoned that Near Eastern Wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica; below) — which are thought to be the ancestors of all domestic cats — became domesticated through a commensal pathway, after they began visiting human settlements to eat rodents. Surprisingly, however, there has been little archaeological evidence to back up this idea.

The Mysterious Origins of Cat Domestication in China

In the archaeological record, the earliest evidence of a relationship between human and wildcat goes back to 9,500 years ago in Cyprus — at the site of Shillourokambos, archaeologists discovered a wildcat buried with a human. "This suggests that people cared for that cat," Marshall said. "This might have been a really early stage of domestication." The first evidence for actual domestic cats stems from Ancient Egyptian art from 4,000 years ago.

But just what happened during that crucial 5,500-year timespan has been a complete mystery — until now.

Unearthing the Ancient Food Web

Marshall's colleagues in China, led by Yaowu Hu of the Chinese Academy of Science, excavated the Quanhucun archaeological site, located in the village of Quanhucun, Hua County, Shaanxi Province, China. The site, Marshall explained, was an ancient farming village that was part of the ancient Yangshao Culture, which was involved in the early domestication of millet and pigs.

At the site, the scientists found the remains of various animals, including pigs, deer, dogs and rodents. They also found numerous other archaeological features and artifacts, such as houses, storage pits and pottery. Ancient rodent burrows leading to grain-storage pits suggested that the farmers had a major rodent issue — this was also evidenced by the presence of certain crop-storage pots that were designed to protect food stores from rodents.

The archaeologists discovered eight cat bones (from two or more different cats) in three refuse pits, which also housed various other animal bones, pottery and tools. Radiocarbon dating showed that the cat specimens were about 5,300-years old, and that they lived in the area for at least 200 years. Interestingly, scientists previously believed that cats first appeared in China only 2,000 years ago.

The Mysterious Origins of Cat Domestication in China

Some of the cat specimens unearthed: A. left mandible; B. right humerus; C. left pelvis; D. left tibia. Via PNAS.

The team analyzed the carbon and nitrogen isotopes present in the animal and human remains to determine what they ate. The results suggested that the wild herbivores, such as deer and hare, fed on some kind of wild vegetation in the area. The humans, dogs and pigs all had diets rich in millet-based foods; the researchers believe the diets of the dogs and pigs were based on human food remains (from leftovers or garbage) and feces. The rodents also had isotope values indicative of millet products. The cats, on the other hand, appeared to have been preying on animals with a high millet diet, which were most likely those grain-eating rodents.

The isotope values of one of cat specimens stood out from the rest. Unlike the other cats, this animal ate far less meat than would be expected if it were actively hunting rodents. The cat may have been unable to hunt for whatever reason and instead lived by scavenging from human food remains, or villagers may have taken care of it. "It certainly wasn't living in a way that a wild cat would normally live," Marshall said. Additionally, another cat specimen had very worn teeth, showing that it survived into old age. "That suggests that cats were doing very well in that environment, whether they were wild or domestic or like feral alley cats today."

The study suggests that the cats were able to carve out a niche in the Chinese farming village. As previous theories had suggested, the cats were drawn to the village because of the abundance of rodents, which were living off of the farmers' food. Here, they had access to year-round food and were possibly cared for by humans after they could no longer hunt — this allowed them to thrive in the new habitat. Humans equally benefited from having a new kind of pest control. Over time, the relationship between cats and humans strengthened, leading to true domestication.

The scientists aren't sure about the cats' lineage. The bones were smaller than European wildcat bones and comparable to those of modern European domestic cats, but there's no DNA evidence yet that the unearthed cats are descendants of the Near Eastern Wildcat, which are not native to the region. It may be the case that these Yangshao cats are semi-domesticated Near Eastern Wildcats that had come from the west along a complex trade network. These animals could also have interbred with Asian wildcats (F. s. ornata and F. s. bieti). Less likely, the cats may have been locally domesticated from the Asian wildcat population, which would mean there's an entirely different domestication history of cats we don't know about. The Chinese researchers are now working with scientists in France to get DNA data and some answers.

Whatever the case, Marshall thinks the work helps us understand what our relationships with cats were initially like. "We now know that humans and cats are historically tied together by food," she said.

Why a healthy lifestyle could save your sanity S

We know that adopting a healthy lifestyle, like not smoking, exercising regularly, and keeping our weight down, yields long term benefits. But a recently concluded 35-year study is showing just how extensive these health benefits can be — and not just to our bodies, but our minds as well.

It's called the Caerphilly Cohort Study and it all got started back in 1979. It's one of several recent studies showing the importance of lifestyle on our health.

An Extensive Long Term Study

Researchers recorded the health habits of 2,235 middle-aged men aged 45 to 59 in the UK. Over the course of the next three decades, these participants were tracked for their incidences of diabetes, vascular disease, cancer, and death (a stat the researchers refer to as "all cause mortality" — which includes everything from death-by-disease through to getting hit by a streetcar).

To monitor healthy lifestyles, the researchers tracked five specific behaviors:

  1. Regular exercise (described as walking two or more miles to work each day, or cycling ten or more miles to work each day, or 'vigorous' exercise described as a regular habit)

  2. Non-smoking

  3. Low body weight (a BMI of 18 to under 25 Kg/m2)

  4. Healthy diet (three or more portions of fruit and/or vegetables a day was accepted as 'healthy', together with less than 30% of calories from fat)

  5. Low alcohol intake (defined as three or fewer units per day, with abstinence not treated as a healthy behaviour)

Four Out of Five Ain't Bad

After analyzing the results, the researchers discovered that participants who followed four or five of these lifestyle habits experienced — get this — 70% fewer instances of diabetes, heart disease and stroke, when compared to those who followed none. Whoa.

In terms of specifics, the numbers broke down like this: 50% reduction in diabetes, 50% in vascular disease (equating to delayed onset of 12 years and an added six years of life!), and 60% for all-cause mortality.

But here's where it gets even more fascinating: The same group — the 4/5 or 5/5 people — experienced a 60% decline in dementia and cognitive decline. And surprisingly, exercise was the strongest factor. Actually, if you're a regular reader of io9, this won't really surprise you. The researchers say this can be attributed to the stimulation of vascular metabolic and emotional pathways.

Strangely — and even the researchers were taken aback by this — the only health behavior that influenced the onset of cancer was non-smoking. That's actually quite upsetting. If we're to accept these results, it means that all that exercise and all that healthy eating you're doing is contributing squat as far as cancer is concerned.

Minority Report

Speaking through an official release, Principle Investigator Professor Peter Elwood had this to say about the findings:

The size of reduction in the instance of disease owing to these simple healthy steps has really amazed us and is of enormous importance in an aging population. What the research shows is that following a healthy lifestyle confers surprisingly large benefits to health – healthy behaviours have a far more beneficial effect than any medical treatment or preventative procedure.

Taking up and following a healthy lifestyle is however the responsibility of the individual him or herself. Sadly, the evidence from this study shows that very few people follow a fully healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, our findings reveal that while the number of people who smoke has gone down since the study started, the number of people leading a fully healthy lifestyle has not changed.

Elwood is referring to the fact that less than 1% of people in Wales (a location chosen because of its highly representative social class distribution) followed a completely healthy lifestyle.

Confounders?

Of course, there could be a ton of other factors, or residual confounders, other than the five listed by the researchers. Like socioeconomic status, education, or marital status. "Nevertheless, our findings confirm that there is a substantial health benefit associated with a healthy lifestyle," conclude the researchers in the study.

Moreover, the researchers admit that the study was limited — but limited in way that the full impact of healthy lifestyles had to be underestimated owing to the small numbers of men adhering to all five healthy behaviors. In other words, the 4/5 and 5/5 people may have actually benefited even more than the study suggests.

We've been waiting far, far too long for a new book from Mike Carey, author of the Felix Castor books and also writer of such great comics as The Unwritten, Lucifer and My Faith in Frankie. So rejoice in the book trailer for his new book, The Girl With All the Gifts.

The Girl With All the Gifts is actually credited to M.R. Carey, but the name change hasn't dented Carey's brilliance at all. I've read most of it already, but I made myself stop because the book doesn't come out until June 2014 in the U.S., and I wanted to have it fresh in my mind when I review it then. Suffice to say, though, that it was hard to quit reading such a compelling, intense book.

I won't give away any of the book's secrets here — but you can read some chapters right now, if you like its Facebook page.

On the list of projects looking for a little crowfunding is an artbook depicting a world created by movie concept artists, a collection of comics based on the tales of the Brothers Grimm, a swashbuckling all-ages fantasy novel, a series of stories from the universe of the Elite computer games, and an anthology of short films from Italy's exploitation directors.

Top image from Erstwhile Tales.

Justin Sweet and Vance Kovacs are concept artists who have worked on the Narnia movies, Snow White and the Huntsman, John Carter, Thor, The Avengers, and more. In The Art of Eclipse: The Well and the Black Sea, they will be sharing a fantasy world of their own creation, collecting traditional and digital paintings, sketches and watercolors, writings and ideas into a concept art book. For a $35 pledge, they are offering hardcover copies of the book.

We're great fans of the webcomic Erstwhile Tales, which adapts the less popular fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. The second print volume contains the stories "Snow White & Rose Red," "Brother & Sister," "Iron Hans," "Death of the Little Hen," "Doctor Know-It-All," and "The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes." For a $15 pledge, backers can nab ebooks of both volumes, or they can pick up a print copy of Volume 2 for an $18 pledge.

Aaron de Orive (Star Wars: The Old Republic, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided) and Nebula-nominated Martha Wells (The Death of the Necromancer, Emilie and the Hollow World) have collaborated on a new, all-ages, swashbuckling adventure novel, Blade Singer:

Manuel "Manny" Boreaux, a troubled adolescent from Texas, is magically transported into the body of a goblin pickpocket in an alternate world inhabited by faerie creatures. Manny must quickly adapt to the danger all around him and try to find a way to get back home, a feat complicated by the pickpocket's association with a notorious gang of thieves. But when Manny uncovers a plot to assassinate a young king, he must enlist the aid of an elf cavalier and a cat burglar to thwart a Sidhe witch's scheme to ignite a civil war between humans and the Fae.

For a $10 pledge, they are offering ebook copies of the novel and a print volume for a $20 pledge.

When the open-ended space trading video game Elite was first introduced in 1984, it came with Robert Holdstock's novella The Dark Wheel, set in the game's universe. In that same spirit, Dan Grubb is working with 18 authors to produce a series of audiobooks and print novels set in the world of Elite. They should make a nice companion to the game Elite: Dangerous, which Frontier Developments is planning to release early next year. Grubb is offering various book and ebook packs at various pledge levels.

Twelve Italian directors from the Giallo and horror genres gather for THE BOOK, an anthology of gory love letters to Rome. Each director will helm their own episode of the series, showcase their unique vision of Rome—with plenty of genre movie magic. For a $25 pledge, backers will get to view the completed project digitally. For a $50 pledge, they can get a signed DVD/Blu-Ray copy of THE BOOK.
