Astronomers say Super-Earths may be completely sterile S

The Milky Way appears to be peppered with so-called Super-Earths — distant exoplanets that are between two to 10 Earth masses. Many of them have even been detected within habitable zones. But a new study shows it doesn't matter. They're all just dead worlds.

Super-Earths — many of which are Mini-Neptunes — can be terrestrial planets like Earth, or gaseous blobs like Uranus and Neptune. Astronomers have catalogued nearly 400 of these exoplanets (many of which were identified in a recent Kepler study).

Because of their (relatively) reasonable size, some astrobiologists have wondered if Super-Earths are habitable. But a new analysis by researchers at the Space Research Institute (IWF) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences indicates this is likely not the case.

When planets from from hydrogen, helium, and heavier elements that orbit in the protoplanetary disk around stars, dust and rocky material clump together over time, eventually forming rocky cores that become planets. The gravity of these proto-planets draws hydrogen from the disk around them, some of which is stripped away by ultraviolet light.

Astronomers say Super-Earths may be completely sterile S

The mass of the initial rocky core determines whether the final planet is potentially habitable. On the top row of the diagram, the core has a mass of more than 1.5 times that of the Earth. The result is that it holds on to a thick atmosphere of hydrogen (H), deuterium (H2) and helium (He). The lower row shows the evolution of a smaller mass core, between 0.5 and 1.5 times the mass of the Earth. It holds on to far less of the lighter gases, making it much more likely to develop an atmosphere suitable for life. Caption and image: NASA / H. Lammer.

But according to Helmut Lammer, Super-Earths, unlike Earth-sized planets, hold on to almost all of their hydrogen. The resulting planets end up as mini-Neptunes with atmospheres much thicker than what we see here on Earth. The same holds true for Super-Earths within habitable zones, such as Kepler-62e and -62f.

"Our results suggest that worlds like these two super-Earths may have captured the equivalent of between 100 and 1000 times the hydrogen in the Earth's oceans, but may only lose a few percent of it over their lifetime," notes Lammer in a statement. "With such thick atmospheres, the pressure on the surfaces will be huge, making it almost impossible for life to exist." The ongoing discovery of low density super-Earths affirms these conclusions.

Of course, that excludes the potential for extremophiles to exist in super-dense atmospheres.

Shocks to the brain temporarily rouse people from vegetative states S

After undergoing transcranial direct current stimulation, patients in a minimally conscious state exhibited signs of increased awareness and even the ability to communicate. The effect didn't last long — but the insights gleaned could lead to more effective interventions.

Patients who are in a coma cannot move or respond to their environment. But a so-called vegetative state is a bit different; it's a type of coma in which people cannot fully emerge from unconsciousness. They often give the impression that they're pulling out from a coma, but they still lack true or full awareness. That said, brain scans show that some of these people have an inner life and are able to respond to their environment.

Unfortunately, doctors have had very little success trying to pull people out of such states. But in some cases, patients who were thought to be in an unrecoverable vegetative state were awakened after being administered a $5 over-the-counter sleeping pill called zolpidem. This pill seems to be invigorating brain cells that were once thought to be dead. But it now appears that low-level currents can do something similar.

Thanks to an experiment conducted at the University of Liège in Belgium, there may be hope in the form of mild electric shocks — or more accurately, transcranial direct current stimulation. Also known as tDCS, it's a form of neurostimulation that administers constant, low currents directly to the brain via small electrodes. It's typically used to help patients with brain injuries such as strokes. It can even improve math skills.

For the experiment, the researchers worked with 55 people who had experienced a traumatic brain injury or lack of oxygen to the brain. All were in a minimally conscious or vegetative state — some for as long as years.

During the 20 minute sessions of tDCS — which were aimed at areas responsible for memory, decision-making and awareness (i.e. the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) — 15 patients showed signs of increased awareness, including the ability to move their hands or follow instructions with their eyes. Remarkably, two patients were able to answer questions for two hours before drifting back into their previous state.

Indeed, for all patients, the effects lasted for just a couple of hours. And for most, the treatments yielded only moderate results.

"I don't want to give people false hope – these people weren't getting up and walking around – but it shows there is potential for the brain to recover functionality, even several years after damage," said Steven Laureys in a New Scientist article.

The researchers aren't exactly sure why it works, but they theorize that the stimulation boosts previously dormant brain activity over a threshold, thus enhancing processes involved in attention and working memory.

The team is now trying to figure out a way to prolong the effects.

Much more at New Scientist. The results of the experiment are set to appear in an issue of Functional Neurology.

This sleek gesture-control armband can now be used to pilot a robot S

If we're ever going to build remote-control Jaegers, we're going to need something just like this. It's the Thalmic Myo Armband, and as you'll see in this video, it was just used to control an unmanned robotic vehicle.

The Myo Armband can be used to control an assortment of electronic gadgets, including toys, computers, consumer electronics, video games. In this instance, it was used by a company called Clearpath Robotics to control its Husky Unmanned Vehicle. In the video, you can see the operator making it go forward, reverse, turn left and right, change velocity, and stop.

It works by tracking the electrical activity from a user's muscles to determine which sorts of gesture their hand is making. The band is equipped with sensors to monitor the rotation of both the user's hand and forearm. Importantly, it also features haptic feedback to let users know that a gesture has been received by the device. Eventually, this feature could be used to convey tension or the weight of an object — like the blow from a massive ocean-dwelling creature.

Gesture-control technology could also be used to guide military-grade robots, including DARPA's pack mule which can currently be controlled via voice commands.

Looter caught trying to sell a hoard of Roman gold and silver S

An amateur archaeologist — or more accurately, an opportunistic ass-wipe with a metal detector — recently uncovered a treasure trove of gold and silver artifacts in Germany. But he was promptly caught after trying to sell the rare items on the black market.

The items, which date to the early part of the fifth century AD, were uncovered by the unnamed looter in Germany's southwestern Rhineland-Palatinate state. He gave up the pieces voluntarily, but only after pressure from investigators. Regrettably, German authorities suspect he succeeded in selling some of the pieces overseas. The investigation is ongoing, and police haven't disclosed if the looter will be charged.

According to Archaeology News Network, the discovery is fuelling speculation that the artifacts are the legendary Nibelung treasure that inspired Wagner's opera cycle:

According to Nibelung legend, the warrior Hagen killed the dragon-slayer Siegfried and sank his treasure in the Rhine river. The Rhine has shifted its course many times over the centuries, so the treasure need no longer be under water.

The haul could be worth as much as 1 million euros (USD$1.36 million).

Looter caught trying to sell a hoard of Roman gold and silver S

The History Blog says that

By German law, all excavations for archaeological material must be authorized in advance by the government heritage authority. Different states have differing laws on the particulars. Some allow finders to keep half the value of a find, if not the find itself. The Rhineland-Palatinate is not one of them. Searching for ancient artifacts with a metal detector is a misdemeanor office. Removing any artifacts discovered without reporting them rises to the level of fraud, and selling them can result in a charge of receiving stolen property.

Certainly if monetary value plays a part in determining the severity of a property crime in Germany as it does in the US, this looter is going to be in big trouble. The hoard includes three dozen beautifully detailed solid gold brooches shaped like leaves even more gold square pyramids that archaeologists believe all once ornamented a ceremonial tunic of an important Roman official. There's also a silver dish with the remains of gilding still visible that was cut into pieces, possibly to be used as hacksilver, a solid silver bowl with gold accents inset with semi-precious stones, a crumpled and folded highly decorated silver plate that may have been a chest cover. A set of silver and gold statuettes and pieces of fittings are the remarkable survivors of what was once a curule seat, a commander's portable folding chair.

You can read more about this case at The History Blog, including more detailed information about the recovered pieces.

The genius who led the doomed fight for decimal time

Henri Poincaré was the brilliant mind who gave us the beginnings of chaos theory and Poincaré conjecture. He was also the doggedly persistent nut who was the last member of resistance too a twenty-four hour day and a sixty-minute hour. Let's look at his doomed quest to decimate our day.

Decimal, or metric, time has earned itself quite a reputation. Although plenty of political and social movements espoused the ten-or-hundred-hour day, the hundred-minute hour, and the hundred-second minute, the most infamous was the French revolution. The decimal day was meant to be part of a decimal year. Its base-ten roundness was meant to foster good, solid, rationalist thinking. While no one could say that it ushered in The Terror, it certainly didn't prevent it.

The decimal day did not die with the revolution. Love for it remained in certain circles, particularly in a little group called the Bureau des Longitudes. While not wielding a great deal of power now, it was quite a big deal back when no one quite knew how to measure longitude, and when no two countries could agree on the same international longitude anyway. In 1884, the Bureau des Longitudes was one of the many bodies making a play to have the zero arc run through their nation. In an age full of empires, when all countries wanted an international reputation, this was quite a coup. As we now know, the French Bureau had to forgo the honor, but was thrown a bone. The little bee they had in their bonnet about metric time was once again allowed to fly free. Their country and the world challenged the Bureau to show them what they could produce.

The genius who led the doomed fight for decimal time S

What they got, eventually, was Henri Poincaré, a mathematical genius whose Poincaré conjecture was solved in 2002, and whose musings on the three-body problem - the complicated way three bodies affect each other in space - started the ball rolling on chaos theory. Poincaré believed in decimal time with all his heart, and when he joined the Bureau in 1893, he pushed decimalization of time hard.

Poincaré wanted a lot of things changed. For example, he wanted a circle to have 400 degrees, instead of 360. He found mixes of base-ten and base-six messy. Rising through the ranks of the Bureau, he went from secretary in 1893 to president in 1899, pushing the new and improved system all the way. It must have been disappointing when, in 1897, the Bureau debuted a compromised system. Each day would still have 24 hours. It was only the minutes and seconds that would get changed to hundredths of an hour and a minute respectively. Unsurprisingly, this did not sweeten the deal for anyone. At home, people complained that they'd have to change everything from their watches to the navigational equipment of ships. Other governments were openly incredulous. Although a successful mathematician, physicist, engineer, and philosopher, Poincaré was a failure as a standardizer.

The U.S. Navy says stealth drones could be used to attack enemy planes

Imagine a scenario where a human pilot is accompanied by a fleet of robotic wingmen, each of them ready to attack any wayward enemy aircraft that dares to get in their way. The U.S. Navy says it's a distinct possibility — one that's not beyond current technological capabilities.

Top image: Lockheed Martin UCLASS.

Now that the U.S. military has these handy-dandy Unmanned Carrier-Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike (UCLASS) weapons, it's seriously considering their use in an air-to-air role. So says USNI News who recently interviewed the Navy's director of air warfare Rear Adm. Mike Manazir. This is an intriguing development because UCLASS vehicles were specifically designed for strike roles, intelligence, and surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).

Here's how the proposed system would work: Take a UCLASS aircraft, like an X-47B UAV, and equip it with a bunch of AMRAAMs (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles). Because it's just a drone, it would serve as a virtual airborne transport truck — it doesn't have the capacity (or the legal provision) to instigate an air-to-air attack on its own (at least not yet). So each UCLASS would be be accompanied by a human pilot flying, say, a Northrop Grumman E-2D Hawkeye or a Lockheed Martin F-35C Joint Strike Fighter. These human flight leaders would remotely command the UCLASS vehicles and serve as the decision-maker.

In other words, a single pilot could have one or more robotic wingmen accompanying them during a mission. Very armed and dangerous wingmen.

More from USNI's interview with Manazir:

"This is not beyond the state-of-the-art," Pietrucha said. "The difficulty is always that the aircraft it self has no judgment and no prioritization scheme and isn't going to have the systems onboard to do all things that a fighter does."

The solution, Pietrucha said, is to leverage the sensors, situational awareness and inherent human judgment of a fighter pilot in a manned command aircraft. The manned aircraft would detect, track and identify the target, then hand-off the target for the unmanned aircraft to engage the "bandit"—as hostile targets are known.

"The Navy is ahead of the Air Force on this," Pietrucha said, specifically citing the Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air (NIFC-CA) concept where a common air picture would be shared across multiple air platforms via a network of data-links.

Under the NIFC-CA concept, any "shooter" can fire on a target that is being tracked by a "sensor", so long as the target is within range.

"If you solve that problem, then your missile caddy UCAV [unmanned combat air vehicle] wingman is a going concern," Pietrucha said. "You can now target his missiles for him."

What if video game legend Sonic the Hedgehog existed in the real world? It would probably look something like this. And this is disgusting.

We are not sure where this originated from but thank you to the So Chill Network for pointing this out. Also if anyone knows where this monster was created can you tell them to make another one where he's rolling? Thanks bye.

Update: Is it a modified creation from Altered Beast? Taking all guesses in comments.

Why cutting off the tail off someone's horse used to be a huge insult

During the Middle Ages, horses were a symbol of wealth, power — and manliness. So, if you really, really, wanted to hurt a guy, you could hit him where it hurt the most — by cutting off his horse's tail.

In his article, "'Tails' of Masculinity: Knights, Clerics, and the Mutilation of Horses in Medieval England" (Speculum: October 2013), historian Andrew Miller writes that, "Few greater images of power, wealth, and manliness in the Middle Ages can be conjured than that of a mounted knight charging into battle or of a nobleman astride a magnificent steed, falcon at his wrist, leading a braying pack of hounds on the chase."

Why cutting off the tail off someone's horse used to be a huge insult S

So, by removing the tail of a rival's horse, it served as a ritualistic and symbolic act that attacked their masculinity, with the horse's tail serving as a phallic symbol. It was a potent insult, one that took place in medieval England, Europe, and even the Arabic Middle East.

No doubt, as noted in Medievalists.net, the physical condition and appearance of a horse were of the utmost importance, "for a handsome horse complemented its rider." Accordingly, horses were bred to have long tails and manes. From Medievalists:

The Normans were...pre-occupied with their own manliness and were much more open to using punishments such as castration and blinding than other medieval Europeans as they saw it as a way of destroying and emasculating their enemies. The same notion applied when attacking the horse's tail – the perpetrators were symbolically attacking one's manhood. Miller notes that Thomas Aquinas even found this to be the case when he wrote: "Vengeance is wrought on dumb animals and any other irrational creatures, because in this way their owners are punished."

The most notorious example took place on Christmas Eve, 1170, when Robert de Broc and his men attacked a park owned by Thomas Becket, the archbishop of Canterbury, where they cut off the tail of one of the archbishop's horses. The animal was brought to Becket, who exclaimed, "a mare in my service has in contempt of my name had its tail cut off—as though I could be put to shame by the mutilation of a beast!" The archbishop then excommunicated Robert. A few days later, on December 29th, Robert de Broc led the four knights who came from Henry II's court to Canterbury, where those men would enter the cathedral and murder the archbishop.

In addition to cutting off the tail, an attacker might also cut off the ears or lips of a horse — or make a person kiss his horse's ass:

For example, in 1313 a group of townsmen from Canterbury attacked the archbishop's home, where they found and seized Richard Cristien, the archbishop's dean. According to the complaint made, these men took the dean and "put him on his horse with his face to the tail and inhumanely compelled him to hold the tail and ride, with songs and dances, through that town and afterwards cut off the tail, ears, and lips of his horse, cast the dean in a filthy place, carried away writings, muniments and some privileges of the archbishop in his custody, and prevented him from executing his office."

Ah, good times.

Much more at Medievalists.

User DarthKy submitted this X-Mansion set to LEGO CUUSOO, where folks can submit and vote on their favorite LEGO ideas. The proposed set is massive, featuring several rooms from the mansion's interior as well as three staircases. Naturally, Charles Xavier, Beast, Kitty Pryde, and a number of other X-Men characters would show up in minifig form—although perhaps not nearly as many as DarthKy has included in the mockup. It would certainly be an expensive set if Marvel and LEGO decided to make it, but the result would be a pretty sweet stage for all your imagined X-Men adventures.

You can see more mockup images on the campaign page, and if you dig the project, vote for it at LEGO CUUSOO.

Elton John Making Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Movie! S

Just think of all the new GIF possibilities!

Elton John's production company has just picked up the rights to Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's wildly theatrical musical adaptation of the Biblical story of Joseph. One of the most musical-y of all musicals, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was so popular it resurrected the career of Donny Osmond.

The show features a gigantic children's choir (who stand around the edges of the stage to sing for most of the show) a modern day narrator, an Elvis-impersonating Pharaoh, and a mostly shirtless male lead. It's fabulous. And now, THR is reporting that Elton John will be turning the colorful spectacle into a movie. John will executive produce the film, along with Webber and Rice (which makes us happy that they're all aboard).

But oh my goodness, this movie is going to be insane. I wonder if Elton will play the Pharaoh? Or cameo as God? It could work.

This ancient tablet says Noah's Ark was round S

A recently deciphered 4,000-year-old clay tablet from ancient Mesopotamia is providing new details about the mythological tale of Noah and his ark, including detailed instructions on how the massive, round floating vessel was to be built.

The tablet, which went on display at the British Museum on January 24, is the subject of a new book, The Ark Before Noah, by Irving Finkel, the museum's assistant keeper of the Middle East and the expert who translated the tablet. Finkel acquired the piece when a man brought in a damaged tablet his father had acquired in the Middle East during the Second World War. No larger than a smartphone, it was covered in the jagged cuneiform script of the ancient Mesopotamians.

This ancient tablet says Noah's Ark was round S

The tablet describes how the animals should enter "two by two," and how the giant vessel should be made of rope, reinforced with wooden ribs and coated in bitumen. Completed, the coracle would be two thirds the size of a football field in area (213 feet or 65 meters in diameter) and walls 20 feet or six meters high.

Kinda like this, but MUCH bigger:

This ancient tablet says Noah's Ark was round S

Why a round shape? The Toronto Star explains:

"It was really a heart-stopping moment — the discovery that the boat was to be a round boat," said Finkel, who sports a long grey beard, a ponytail and boundless enthusiasm for his subject. "That was a real surprise." And yet, Finkel said, a round boat makes sense. Coracles were widely used as river taxis in ancient Iraq and are perfectly designed to bob along on raging floodwaters. "It's a perfect thing," Finkel said. "It never sinks, it's light to carry." Elizabeth Stone, an expert on the antiquities of ancient Mesopotamia at New York's Stony Brook University, said it made sense that ancient Mesopotamians would depict their mythological ark in that shape. "People are going to envision the boat however people envision boats where they are," she said. "Coracles are not unusual things to have had in Mesopotamia."

According to Finkel, the instructions (or Godly Orders, depending on how you want to look at it) appear sound, but he doesn't yet know whether it would have floated. A TV documentary due to be broadcast later this year will follow attempts to build the ark based on the ancient texts.

This mind-bending music was created using Voyager spacecraft data

An Italian scientist has taken 37 years worth of data from both Voyager space probes and turned it into music. The result is surprisingly good.

The composer, Domenico Vicinanza, is a project manager at Géant — Europe's high-speed data network that powers Cern and the Large Hadron Collider. He used 320,000 individual measurements of cosmic particle data taken at one-hour intervals using the spacecrafts' cosmic ray detector.

To make this data sound musical, Vicinanza mapped different frequencies, or detections, to different frequencies of a note. And to distinguish between the two spacecraft, he created a kind of duelling duet by giving each probe its own arrangement and sound texture.

"I wanted to compose a musical piece celebrating the Voyager 1 and 2 together, so used the same measurements (proton counts from the cosmic ray detector over the last 37 years) from both spacecrafts, at the exactly same point of time, but at several billions of kilometres of distance one from the other," said Vicinanza in a Guardian article.

I love stuff like this, including John Cramer's auditory interpretation of the first 760,000 years of the universe. While there's a certain novelty to doing this, it's also a way of presenting data a bit differently — in this case, data auditorialization. Listening to Vicinanza's piece, you can "hear" the journey made by the spacecrafts as they traveled through different regions of the solar system.

As an aside, and in the name of unabashed self-promotion, I put out an album called Voyager 2 back in the 1990s to chronicle its journey through the solar system (yes, I used to compose and perform electronic music). You can download it for free here.

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com What happens after medicine finds a way to fight the zombie outbreak

In the midst of a zombie epidemic, a woman wakes in a medical facility that seems to have found a way to control the outbreak. But the epidemic may have left behind deeper scars than her physicians are ready to treat.

David Freyne's The First Wave is meant to be a prequel to a feature film, being developed with support from the Irish Film Board. The premise has shades of the BBC drama In the Flesh, but with a chillier tone. Here we see a world that is trying to rebuild in the wake of a cataclysm, but is so eager to move forward that it neglects the profound traumas that still mark the lives of its denizens.

First Look at the Ape Headquarters in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes S

A whole host of new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes pictures has revealed what happened after the Apes took the Golden Gate Bridge. Including a first look at the primate HQ, where the apes have apparently learned how to use fire, and created their own language.

The first movie in the newly rebooted Apes series concluded with a super uneasy truce — with the Apes in the California woods and the humans in the city. Now, in the year 2026, you can see that things aren't going so well for the humans. According to the new Dawn website (just launched today) the part of the human population wasn't wiped out by "Simian Flu" got killed in bloody human-vs.-simian battle. And now the images below are all that remains of the Mission District of San Francisco.

Also on this new site: a first look at the newly formed ape-dominated world. Including a look into the simian lair, with lights and some sort of ape language. We're getting excited...

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale S

In a double-feature finale, Sleepy Hollow pulled out all the stops: big reunions, big plotcakes, big trouble, big reveals, big cliffhangers, zombie George Washington, and Victor Garber literally eating the scenery. What more can you ask for? (Nothing, there's literally nothing left.)

Oh, Sleepy Hollow. The thirteen-hour B-movie that could has spent the season hurling every horror reference, fantasy stopgap, Masonic handwave, time-travel joke, and monster-flick trope it found. The finale goes for broke (which is saying something), screeching to a cliffhanger you just know everyone in the writers' room cackled about, and leaves all the principal actors worried about their renewal clauses.

And wow, was this finale a trip. Its first half was the most National Treasure the show's ever skewed, complete with an enormous tomb for George Washington (who's dead in there despite taking a brief holiday from being dead so he could return as a zombie and draft a map to Purgatory, because of course), and a faceoff with Andy "Friendzone" Brooks during an escape from the alternate entrance from a thematic hidden tomb with its own rolling track whose vestibule contains a secret exit protocol, which is just about how I always imagined Masons spend their free time and extra money!

The second episode scoops everything the show's been heading for into a blender and adds some new things, leading to a final confrontation that feels slightly like a food fight, except instead of a shoulderful of macaroni everybody's miserable for eight months. ("Tune in next fall or else!" - Sleepy Hollow.)

Is it two hours of plotcakes? You bet. But it has its moments, and some great character beats. This show has always prioritized character continuity over plot continuity, and so that's how we're going to break this thing down.

ANDY

The first returning face: Andy, the kind of guy who in life will offer to watch your house while you're on vacation and copy your keys, and who in death will repeatedly show up and offer to save you by making you his plus-one in hell.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Abbie's actual line: "We need to talk about boundaries."

The rest of the conversation is conducted with Andy chained to a radiator, because Abbie did not get to the season finale just to take chances with her personal creeper. Andy begs for Washington's Bible, because it leads to a map (of course) that leads to the gateway between our world and Purgatory.

Shockingly, she's not into it, and back in the tunnels he's so angry that he begs (with a darkly comic shriek of "Take me seriously!") to be turned into an instrument of Moloch's glory.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

It's probably a tactical error.

So, in a show where there's not a lot of moral gray area (even this episode glosses over some things it shouldn't, but we'll get there), Andy's been the most conflicted character. His obsession with Abbie is refreshingly framed as Not Okay, but for a foregone conclusion of a guy he's often helped Abbie at cost to himself. And though he's a go-between, there's a sense of him struggling against his bonds that's even, slowly, made him sympathetic.

It helps that Nicole Beharie and John Cho have given them the sense of long acquaintance, a shared history that goes deeper than Andy's creeping. Abbie's never been truly afraid of Andy; she was wary of him and took him seriously when he said he couldn't be trusted, but the most afraid of him she's ever been is when he desperately claims Ichabod's going to abandon her like her parents did – a shadow of the confidences she'd shared with him. It's first time she reacts as if he's really betrayed her.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

When he confronts them in Washington's Tomb in his newly gooey form, it's the first time he's attacked Abbie since the pilot, when he knocked her out to keep her out of the fray. And as soon as he's momentarily himself, he begs Abbie to kill him already.

He shows up later in her vision in Purgatory, and it's striking: Corbin would have been more than enough draw for her, but Andy's surrogate-brother mode is clearly something else she's missed. They were friends, once; his descent has been one of the show's most quietly tragic arcs.

I don't know how demon death works on Sleepy Hollow, but I suspect nothing but low ratings is going to kill John Cho. And that's just as well; the show could use more gray areas. Maybe we can just cut down a little on his hilariously escalating suffering.

THE IRVINGS

Speaking of suffering, the Irvings had a pretty shitty day!

The good news is, in the wake of Macey's demonic possession, the Irvings are once again a cohesive unit. The bad news is, Sleepy Hollow is the one fictional township ever to demand real-life answers for supernatural shenanigans; they're out to discover who killed Father Doomed and Agent Blandy, and Irving doesn't have any explanations to give. (Morales is no help, given that his fate is aggressively kept in the dark, perhaps awaiting analysis of his Tumblr popularity.)

Irving confounded my early suspicions and became a moustachioed do-gooder when the chips were down; instead, his burden has been handling the mundane consequences of supernatural warfare. If he'd never confronted the Horseman, this arc could have been him out to imprison Ichabod and Abbie for some of the carnage that's happened on their watch, but now he's a believer, and it's given him nothing but trouble.

Before they can test the DNA swab they took from Macey (without a warrant, apparently – thanks, Sleepy Hollow Commissioner of Jackassery), Irving confesses.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

That's a season wrap on Orlando Jones.

Even though this sidelined Irving at a crucial time, at least he wasn't caught in this crossfire, which will be handy for next season. And in fairness, it really would be hard to explain why you went to a cabin with guards and a priest to avoid a threat on your life and came back with two corpses and no alibi, and I respect that we're going to be wrestling with that for a little while next season. (Knowing this show's pace, "A little while" will be "Ten minutes until he extricates himself or Jenny busts him out.")

JENNY

I mean, if Jenny's still alive. (Of course she's still alive, don't even think otherwise, if you read that sentence and thought otherwise you're a monster.)

Jenny's arc has been revealing the sweetheart beneath the badass. She's still happy to show up at the scene of even minor conflict toting eight guns, but she's actually slowly become the softer of the Mills sisters: cooking Thanksgiving dinner, terrified at any urge she might have had to ever want to hurt her sister. Knowing she's not a Witness could have slotted her into the resentment of second-best, but instead she's become a necessary voice: "You're talking to the girl who spent a decade in Tarrytown Psychiatric for telling the truth" about Irving's chance at justice was a truth bomb perfectly delivered, topped only by her aside to Abbie's concern about having burned the only map to Purgatory: "Wait for it."

And in these last few episodes, she's become Abbie's personal-Hell-No advocate when Abbie's too focused on the bottom line to advocate Hell No for herself. This episode that comes up double, as Jenny pulls Abbie aside to check that she's not marching into Purgatory just because Ichabod's asking; Jenny puts more weight in the prophecy than either of them (smart!), and thinks it's a lot easier not to get your soul stuck in Purgatory if you're not there to start with.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Another thing Jenny loves now: going in for a hug without fear of rejection.

To prove her point, she brings up that dollhouse they had when they were little (you remember that dollhouse, it's that one they never mentioned before), the place Abbie promised her they'd always be safe, which is an adorable yet oddly specific thing to bring up just before a seemingly unrelated adventure.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Wow, someone's childhood memories are on POINT this episode.

Wading through archival tapes, she's the first one to discover the importance of the abandoned church, where she also finds the clue Henry Parrish is a big old liar, which is great, except for this dude:

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Fun fact: I was so busy with everything else that was happening that this guy hadn't occurred to me for an hour, and when he showed up I said out loud, "Oh, right, hi!" like I'd forgotten a brunch date and not the headless guy.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

It doesn't look great. But luckily for Jenny, Sleepy Hollow is also the one fictional township to sell cars that don't instantly explode on impact, so as soon as she wakes up from what had better be a flesh wound, she'll be right back on track and the Horseman is probably going to regret fucking with her. (The last time he messed with a Mills she trapped him in a Masonic cell, you think he'd have learned by now to steer clear.)

KATRINA

On the other hand, maybe he just had other things on his mind, since he was on his way to pick up his Cracker Jack prize.

After a season of narrative water-treading and sub-par flashbacks surrounding declarations of love that made Katrina sound like an object even to Ichabod, and hoping Katrina would at any point manifest an active role in the series and sidestep being the damsel, here's what happens:

- Abbie and Ichabod storm into Purgatory to get her to prevent the rising of the second Horseman, who I thought we'd already seen in Ye Old Roanoke, but apparently we're all collectively pretending that episode didn't exist.

- After two tries, she divines the way to the Four White Trees:

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

"Northeast." Or southwest! It's a stick with no defining end! You're honestly terrible at this! Why does this show hate you!

- She gets captured by Henry, knocked out, and given over to the Horseman, who bros up on his horse just in time to grab her and go.

Good luck next season, Katrina. You'll need it.

HENRY

The person who hands Katrina over to the Horseman? Her son, Henry! OR SHOULD I SAY JEREMY. *crack of thunder *

Yup. Sin-eating Henry Parrish is actually the Horseman of War, appointed by Moloch thirteen years ago. God apparently sent Abbie to stop it, but since she was like fourteen years old and God had not bothered to explain anything, it was not a triumph, shall we say. In fact, nothing about the roles or powers of Witnesses has been explained, if you think about it, which this show is hoping you don't. Did it mention Henry's actually Jeremy?

Looking back, there are clues, many of them stirred into trope soup (his talk about crossword deflections), and many hilariously overwrought in retrospect: remember when he talked about his dad supporting him when his powers manifested? HIS REAL DAD, ICHABOD, OKAY?

These episodes wanted you to figure it out, though, when he couldn't touch the rosary without hurting himself and declared, "There's a hex on these beads." Of course Ichabod and Abbie bought it, because half the stuff in Sleepy Hollow is covered in hexes by now, but when that wound healed up by itself and demons just Fosse-d in his general vicinity rather than attacking, that jig was up.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

It's a loss, because Henry was a great addition to the series, poignant but wry, and his sin-eater power, which worked less like traditional sin-eating than it did the Rogue of Sleepy Hollow, was another grasp at moral complication and the best exposition delivery system this show could hope for. Now that's gone, courtesy of an extremely convoluted and conditional Bondian plan for revenge that Henry's very lucky panned out anything like he wanted (and for which he had to push their immortal connection – "Remember your bond" – which was probably secretly hilarious for him). Now we're slated to come back next season planted in one of the less interesting subplots of the season. At least maybe now that he's a clear and present danger, things will move.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

John Noble sold it, of course. Imagine him in front of the mirror, oozing evil into lines like, "We had to know that finding a map to Purgatory wouldn't be easy." And they really wouldn't know! They've found everything else they were ever looking for in under forty minutes. Evil indeed.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

("I trusted you," Ichabod bites out, booted toes wriggling with outrage.)

Still, John Noble gives great bad guy. Hopefully Season Two answers some lingering questions: How long did Henry really know "old friend" the Horseman, who was asleep in his tomb when Henry rose and has only been on earth a few months? Do they visit often? How has Henry been out of the grave only thirteen years after being put in stasis in his early twenties, yet is now in his sixties rather than his late thirties? Didn't we already see the next Horseman in that other episode, or is the Horseman of Daddy Issues traditionally second?

ICHABOD

The man, the myth, the Mason.

Amid wrestling with autocorrect, dating Betsy Ross, missing Yolanda, and briefly forgetting he had photographic memory, Ichabod had some problems to grapple with: stumbling into a weekend reenactors' camp and getting some new duds while correcting their details with some Romantic Lead Face.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

(One of my favorite things about this show is when it historically nitpicks and then uses the magical teapot of Thomas Jefferson to pour holy water to seal the Fissure of Destruction that will inevitably be located just outside town.)

His other real problem was that Abbie finally called out his myopia about Katrina at the risk of all of humanity. He explains, "I have waited a very long time for this." (Dude, it's been like six months. You know who's been waiting a long time for this? Katrina. Get your head right.)

And there was a flicker of organic, morally-gray conflict in this finale that did not get its due: Ichabod, who destroyed the map explicitly as a show of trust in (and to) Abbie, goes home, remembers he has photographic memory, and drops Katrina's necklace the Horseman barfed out of his neck stump one time so he can draw a recreation.

When Abbie finds out she is, quite rightly, stricken: "You lied." But as soon as the plot's demanded they get to Purgatory, he's demanded she tell him she appreciates what he's done.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Your Jesus halo is full of shit, Crane.

That he would ask that of Abbie after explicitly breaking her trust is one of the most jarring moments in the episode; that she capitulates on this is the other one. From the very start, trust has been the thing in their relationship that needed constant proving. The pilot was about establishing it, and any time they've come into conflict with one another—rare, but it's happened—it's been because Abbie couldn't trust Ichabod to keep his word on something, as in "Necromancer" when he was losing his cool. Even at the beginning of the finale, Abbie was struggling with the instinct to believe Andy when he said Ichabod would abandon her.

It would, I think, have been another matter if he'd just remembered the way, but to write it down in another easily-stolen form is actually Ichabod playing more directly into the forces of evil than the show seems to think, and for me this is the sourest note of the finale. (It would have been fine to have tension over this right up until they hit Purgatory; it could have actually worked better! Double guilt for Ichabod!)

But into Purgatory they go. His vision falls a little flat, since his dad's just a distant dickweed on the winds of history. But if you're going to get someone for a single scene, make it Victor Garber in a powdered wig and muffin hat, and if you're going to have him do something supernatural, make it literally eating the scenery as he screams Ichabod right out of town.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Purgatory itself was kind of great. The creepy plunk piano-soundtrack being played in situ is perfect, and there's always room for a Purgatory that looks like a Cirque du Soleil number.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

And the fist-bump ID verification was one of the best callbacks of the season, re-establishing their rapport just in time to decide who's going to stay behind for Katrina in Purgatory. Abbie volunteers to stay to face Moloch, and though both of them are aware they're fulfilling the prophecy by doing it, Ichabod agrees.

And then, in a tonally interesting move, they intensely hug as they promise each other their trust and aid in these darkest times, as Ichabod swears he'll come back for Abbie right away, probably much sooner than he came for Katrina, just, he'll be back instantly, remember the bond, he's already on his way back, just think of him and count to one hundred and he'll be right back to get you, as poor Katrina stands vaguely at the edge of the frame.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Yikes.

After the pent-up emotion of this doomed parting, it's somehow an afterthought that he gets trapped against a tree and forced to listen to his son's bad-guy monologue.

Losing Katrina and losing Abbie within a few minutes of such a huge betrayal has him reeling, and when Henry throws him to the ground Ichabod doesn't have it in him to fight. And so after all this, he ends the season where he started it: in the grave.

ABBIE

So, let's talk about Abbie Mills, because despite being on a show that routinely asks its characters to talk very seriously about lanterns made of human heads, Abbie is one of the most important characters on the TV landscape this season.

She's definitely working in partnership with Ichabod, and some of her appeal is their fantastic rapport. But over the season, Ichabod is delightful but often serves largely as someone who was around when groundwork was laid; he provides topical information, moral support, and good company. Abbie's been the person to struggle with her place, to actively recruit help, to manage iffy circumstances, and to get the results she wants. She is this season's hero, and when she goes down, she goes down fighting, in a tiny dollhouse. (Forget that last part.)

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Her concerns about the map in the face of Ichabod's single-mindedness reflect her supreme internal question since accepting she's a Witness: "What are we willing to do to keep everyone – everything – safe?" It's one of the reasons Jenny has to make a side plea to make sure she's not throwing herself on a bullet for Crane. (Jenny and Ichabod are going to have such an awkward reunion after this.) It's the reason she's concerned about Irving, Henry, Andy. She even gets to monologue about Cincinattus, the Emperor who didn't want power and gave it up when his war was over.

It makes her time in Purgatory even more telling. Corbin's cabin is a heartbreaking battlefield for her; Corbin's every inch the caring dad, and it's an even bigger sting that the other figure in it is Andy. When she embraces Corbin and whispers, "I miss you so much," you forgive her for forgetting. And her carefree mien at the table – reciting Corbin's pie axiom, stealing from Andy's plate – is great work by Nicole Beharie.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Damn you, show, you know how much I wanted their reunion. BUT NOT LIKE THIS, SHOW. Not like this.

As I'd hoped, when confronted by Moloch, she punches the apocalypse in the face and runs for it, ending up in the safety of her childhood dollhouse (good thing we planted that seed early), meeting up with the memories Moloch robbed them of that day in the woods. From them, she learns about Henry's treachery, and that the plot doorway to Purgatory has closed, leaving her with no way out.

Sleepy Hollow Goes Full Masonic in its Season Finale

Hey, here's a fun thing: Moloch locking Abbie and Jenny's memories in means that even in such a desolate place, they've been able to support and lean on each other in a way the aboveworld Abbie and Jenny missed out on for thirteen years. You're welcome.

And though I expect this captivity to be swiftly dealt with when the show returns, Abbie, too, ends up where she started: forever trapped in the moment with the Four White Trees.

Thanks for the season, Sleepy Hollow. It's been beautifully-cast, hilarious, plotcakey, and occasionally sublime. See you in the fall.
