This video of a common rabbit doing an uncommon thing has been haunting me for days. I cannot stop thinking about its peaceful wittle face, lounging in the sink while being bathed by its masters. It thinks its people, and that is both adorable and really upsetting.

The bunny's name is Cloody — and as you can see, it likes napping while taking baths. Many more Cloody videos at his youtube page. But this is truly the best one. Gross.

According to the owners on their youtube page:

While bathing,Cloody was so relaxed that he actually fell asleep. It's so beautiful and funny! As for all the negative comments, I hold him in a baby position in my arms as well and it relaxes him to sit that way so he falls asleep. He also enjoys a body massage, except for his feet. After his baths he goes outside to dry off as usual. Rabbits rarely bathe because they can use their tongues to clean themselves, but since he can't reach his back he likes the water. It is absolutely harmless! So don't be so negative about this people.

So apparently there has been some pushback on the bunny bathing thing.

Scientists working in Greenland have discovered an extensive aquifer of meltwater that sits under the Greenland ice sheet all year round — but it's not known if this reservoir, which is about the size of Ireland, will ever make its way to the ocean.

Meltwater pouring off from Greenland's extensive ice sheets is a known contributor to rising sea levels. And in fact, high meltwater runoff is responsible for half of Greenland's mass loss — and it's a phenomenon that's progressively getting worse. It now appears, however, that much of Greenland's meltwater isn't getting to the ocean, which may help explain disparities seen between climate models and satellite observations.

The discovery came as a complete surprise to a team of geoscientists who were expecting to find layers of dry snow. In a new study published in Nature Geoscience, they describe how the water, instead of being stored in the air space between subsurface rock particles, sits in the air space between the ice particles. It's similar to the way fruit juice stays liquid in a slushie.

The team, led by the University of Utah's Richard Forster, had been drilling in Greenland in early spring — a time before the annual melt. As they brought up a core sample, water started gushing out of it. The new observations suggest that a significant amount of water is stored in this partially compacted snow, which is called firn. This water remains in liquid form all year round — even when freezing air temperatures reach -5ºF (-15ºC). The water is insulated by the large amounts of snow that fall on the surface of the ice sheet in late summer.

Unsure of just how much water was below the ice, the researchers used ice penetrating radar to identify the top of reservoir near the watery cores. The resulting data was used to search for and map how much more water sat below. The survey revealed a gigantic area — about 27,000 square miles (70,000 square km). But what the scans did not reveal was the depth of the aquifer, the top layer of which just sits a few dozen feet below the icy surface. The geoscientists think the depth of the reservoir is about 16 to 165 feet (5-50 meters).

Should this be the case, that's about 140 billion tonnes of water. That's equal to 0.4 mm of sea level rise per year, which is about half of Greenland's contribution to the sea each year. The researchers don't know if the water will ever make its way to the ocean.

"It depends on whether it is currently connected to a system that is draining into the ocean or if it is a bit isolated and completely acting as a storage source without a current connection," said Forster. "We don't know the answer to this right now. It's massive, it's a new system we haven't seen before — we need to understand it more completely if we are to predict sea level rise."

While this feature usually promotes concept art - it's very pretty, after all - it'd be unfair not to also acknowledge the tireless work of VFX artists, who specialise in things like explosions, fluids, smoke, lighting, particles, fire and magic spells.

Imagine Lex Luthor as a really nice guy and you'll be pretty close to understanding Alfred Loomis. He was a scientist and inventor, a businessman and investor, a wealthy and prominent man. And he also invented the "Death Ray."

The Business World

Alfred Loomis was a millionaire, a philanthropist, and a guy you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. It's not that he was a bad person, it's just that if you were going to meet the inventor of the Death Ray, you would want to be someplace well-lit so you could see what he was pointing at you. Loomis was born relatively wealthy, and multiplied that wealth throughout his life. He started slow, quitting a law firm to join the army in World War I, and working his way into a weapons engineering unit. There, he perfected and patented a couple of weapons testing devices.

After the war, Loomis headed to the business world. He and his brother-in-law, Landon Thorne, acquired an ailing investment house and nursed it back to health. Loomis' science training came in handy. Thorne and Loomes were looking to finance public utilities at a time when electricity was spreading across the country. Having someone who could understand the technical details was the key to knowing which nuts to pick. And speaking of nuts to pick, Loomis spent the latter years of his business career collecting and funding promising scientists. At the time, there wasn't much public funding available for the sciences, so Loomis knew he'd have to work to support the people who were trying to engineer new technology.

The Death Ray

In 1924, he got together with Robert Wood, a professor of physics at Johns Hopkins University, and started the real mad science. The two of them researched high-frequency sound waves, and their effects on matter. They found that, with enough intensity, these sound waves disrupted the tissue in blood vessels. Exposure to the waves killed small animals and frog eggs, as well as a few plants. The two published an article titled, "The Physical and Biological Effects of High-Frequency Sound-Waves of Great Intensity," and the news of the "Death Ray" was out. Loomis' background in weapons research informed the work on the weapon, and for the next decade popular science publications predicted a death ray that burst the insides of cells. Its possibilities made headlines again and again. At first, people thought it might be used to simply zap enemy troops. Later, when it was found that these waves worked best through liquid and solid, people thought the ray might be a way to kill submarine crews.

Eventually, they found that sound waves were not useful in terms of murdering anything more than frog eggs and the hopes of a million megalomaniacs died. However, science and weapons research found champions outside the private sphere. And after World War II, most governments got more interested in the applied sciences. Loomis' laboratories had competition for the best scientists, and Loomis himself wanted to take it a bit easy after his years as a lawyer, soldier, investor, engineer, and mad scientist. Still, those must have been heady times. Loomis remains a famous patron of the sciences. He died in 1975, respected by scientists, loved by his family . . . and feared by anyone with any sense.

Back in the late 40s, Bozo the Clown was hot stuff. He was the star of a lot of kids' books, including one about an amazing rocket. Unfortunately, this futuristic story was also amazingly racist.

The Bozo character was originally created by Alan Livingston for a series of children's books that combined words and pictures with a recorded story and music. The voice of Bozo was played by Pinto Colvig. Bozo eventually became so popular he became the official mascot for Capital Records. He became a TV star in 1949, with Colvig again playing Bozo. Larry Harmon bought the rights to the character in 1956 and immediately franchised the clown to TV stations coast-to-coast. Harmon's genius lay in his realization that anyone could play Bozo and the kids wouldn't know the difference.

Among titles like "Bozo's Jungle Jingles," "Bozo at the Circus," and "Bozo and the Birds," we have "Bozo and his Rocket Ship."

The story starts off with Bozo proudly showing off his brand-new rocket.

"Hello! Hello! I'm Bozo, the circus clown!

I'm going to take you on a trip around the world

In my new sky-rocket ship!"

And sure enough, he does. Things start off pretty well, with visits to Scotland, where everyone wears kilts, Switzerland, where everyone makes cuckoo clocks and France, where a cute little French girl shows Bozo the Eiffel Tower and sings "Frere Jacques" for him.

He even makes a stop in Brazil, where a little barefoot kid has his parrot ask for crackers in Portuguese.

So far so good, but...

Bozo's visit to Greenland is just a forewarning, when the Eskimo he meets there explains in broken English, "Me Eskimo. My house is called an Igloo. It is made of ice. Dog pull me over snow in sled." The Eskimo urges Bozo to see some of the other wonders of Greenland. "You go in rocket ship to see big Walrus. He live in Greenland too. Dog say, 'Walrus big funny face!'"

On his next stop, Bozo tells his little readers,

"Here we are in China!

I think I'll take a ride in this carriage.

It is called a 'jinrickishaw'—-

Well, what are we waiting for, China Boy?"

The rickshaw driver will have none of Bozo's fat ass and yells, "You too heavy! You too heavy! Me velly tired! Velly tired!"

Just wait.

Bozo finally stops in Africa. This is the text as it appears in the book:

Bozo: This is Africa! Hear the jungle drums?

And look at this funny fellow!

What happened to your lips, mister?

You could write a few lines on on the grudge-holding capabilities of the crow, compose a quick couplet on Voyager exiting the solar system, or follow the example of commenter LadyCommentariat, who upon hearing the news that the mysterious picket fence-like structures found in the Amazon had finally been identified as the work of some very enterprising (but shy!) spiders, riffed on some famous Walter Scott lines:

"Oh what a tangled web they weave

when scientists observing they perceive"

Lots of fantasy RPGs have toyed with the idea of "epic levels," where your characters become extremely powerful and face epically dangerous foes — but this concept has been hard to pull off. Until now. Mythic Adventures for the Pathfinder RPG lets your character take on unbelievably huge challenges.

In Dungeons & Dragons, and games derived from it (including Pathfinder), the standard levels top out at 20^th. Anything above that would be considered "epic." And you can see how it would be awesome to play an "epic" level, where your characters can get way more powerful and face epically dangerous foes — or just straight up battle against gods.

But there's an inherent problem with just scaling the attack bonuses and armor classes and damage rolls up and up and up. Eventually the numbers become ridiculous. If your attack bonus is +85, whatever you roll on your trusty D20 seems pointless. There are other problems with different classes not scaling properly and other game design stuff that I won't bore you with. It's sufficient to say that RPGs have always had issues with high-level play.

This all explains why Paizo's approach to Mythic Adventures is so interesting. It is not a book of stuff for characters above 20^th level. It actually adds a separate tier of "mythic power" to characters, giving them access to seriously impressive abilities that go far beyond another D8 for your damage roll. And characters of any level can become mythic.

Here's how becoming mythic works: at some point in the campaign, the characters will encounter some method of accessing mythic power. They might draw the attention of a god, find a font of power, or acquire a mythic artifact. At this point they will undergo ascension and receive their first mythic tier. Mythic tiers are like experience levels, but it's a separate system that runs alongside your usual XP/level-up mechanic. Instead of gaining experience points, you complete mythic trials. Complete a given number of trials and you can advance to another mythic tier (there are ten mythic tiers altogether).

So for instance you could be a fairly average 5^th level fighter, but complete a lot of mythic trials and have six mythic tiers. A 15^th level fighter might only have three mythic tiers if he underwent his mythic ascension later in his career. The tiers are totally independent of your regular character level.

Players choose a path when their character ascends, each path corresponding to a very broad fantasy archetype (Archmage, Trickster, Champion, etc). At each tier you gain certain abilities, as well as mythic points which you can spend for powerful effects. For instance, all mythic characters can spend mythic power to roll an extra D6 if they've just rolled a D20 (for an attack, skill check or saving throw) and failed. A character who chooses the Archmage path can select an ability that allows her to automatically identify any spell cast within 100 feet and easily identify all the properties of magic items. At higher mythic tiers, an Archmage can create an illusory double and teleport 30 feet away when she is struck by a melee attack, completely negating the attack. Each path has roughly three dozen of these abilities, and they're all fun and suitably epic, far more interesting than simple stat boosts.

Mythic characters also get access to mythic feats and spells, as well as mythic magic items. The bulk of these are basically buffed up versions of their non-mythic counterparts – this is my one disappointment with this book. I wish some of the feats and spells were more interesting than, "This is a regular spell but 10 percent better!"

What does a mythic character do? Fight mythic monsters, of course. This might be my favorite part of the book, an entire mythic bestiary. It's heavily focused on classic, iconic monsters like vampires, mummies, and dragons (each chromatic dragon gets a mythic version, and in case you're wondering, a mythic elder wyrm red dragon is worth 1.6 million experience points). You'll also find monsters drawn from Greek mythology: mythic minotaurs, medusas, a hydras.

The book makes a point of describing mythic adventures and the types of trials you might face, with a heavy reliance on Joseph Campbell's monomyth/hero's journey. There's plenty of advice on making your mythic adventures really feel like incredible, world-shaking events, not just regular RPG adventures with extra hit points. They even include an adventure with an erupting volcano, long-abandoned island, and – minor spoiler alert – mythic dinosaurs.

Mythic Adventures has a companion volume, the softcover Mythic Realms. This places mythic adventures specifically within Pathfinder's particular campaign world, Golarion, and gives you places where characters can achieve ascension along with a host of mythic bad guys. These range from hideous undead creatures to bizarre alien titans that fell to Golarion in ages past. I'm particularly fond of a jungle region that is overrun by kaiju (and they actually refer to them as kaiju). I can't think of anything more mythic than an adventuring party battling Godzilla.

What's intriguing is that mythic tiers can easily be temporary, so you don't have to devote an entire campaign to this material if you only want to dip your toe in mythic waters. The god takes the power away, the artifact crumbles to dust, and the awe-inspiring power fades from the characters as suddenly as it came. But a few remnants of that power stick around, and the heroes' exploits will live on in epic sagas — even as they return to the simple, boring lives of typical samurai/gunslingers and fighter/witch/druids.

It's looking extremely unlikely that we'll ever be able to revive dinosaurs using their fossilized DNA, but if a British biochemist is right, we may be able to recreate these ancient animals by rewinding the DNA of birds.

In a recent Telegraph article, Oxford University's Dr. Alison Woollard explained that, by identifying and altering certain genes found in the DNA of modern birds, scientists may be able to reconstruct the genomes of dinosaurs:

"We know that birds are the direct descendants of dinosaurs, as proven by an unbroken line of fossils which tracks the evolution of the lineage from creatures such as the velociraptor or T-Rex through to the birds flying around today," said Dr Woollard.

"The most famous of these is the Archaeopteryx, a fossil which clearly shows the transition between feathered dinosaurs and modern birds.

"This evolution implies that buried deep within the DNA of today's birds are switched-off genes that control dinosaur-like traits.

"Could we 'rewind' evolution by switching these genes back on and using them to guide the development of that bird's offspring, and its offspring's offspring, backwards?"

All animals and plants are related, sharing a common ancestor that lived about 1.6 billion years ago.

"In theory we could use our knowledge of the genetic relationship of birds to dinosaurs to 'design' the genome of a dinosaur," said Dr Woollard.

The challenge, says Woollard, is understanding the full length of a dinosaur's genome to know which "edits" to make to a bird's genome; surviving dinosaur snippets would be found in very short fragments. So, to make a full genome, scientists would likely have to combine together millions of short fragments of nucleic acids in exactly the right order.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Rumor has it this sequel's searching for a "physically imposing man, age range 40-50, Caucasian" — and there's some reports this could be the character of Baron von Strucker, one of the main leaders of HYDRA. Supposedly, Strucker would be a supporting role in Age of Ultron, but this would still mean the film's adding another villain to the one mentioned in the title. If this movie also keeps the Marvel thread of having Thanos as the hidden Big Bad, that means the Avengers would be looking at a lot of villains.

Latino Review says the HYDRA leader part is the boss of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, and that that the studio's looking at Marton Csokas and Dougray Scott for the part of Strucker. As usual, until confirmation, take this rumor with a grain of salt. [Latino Review]

Interstellar

According to Matthew McConaughey, who refuses to actually talk about the plot, the story is "very personal" to Christopher Nolan, as it combines one of his original ideas and an existing script by his brother, Jonathan. McConaughey also described a bit of his experience during filming:

American Horror Story

Here's the synopsis for episode 10, "The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks":

In the aftermath of the slaughter of her people, Marie Laveau seeks a truce with Fiona and the Coven... but her dark master, Papa Legba, demands his annual due. The next morning, Cordelia is horrified when she finally learns that Hank is a Witch Hunter... and Marie confesses hiring him to kill the Coven. Fiona is forgiving of Marie on the grounds that she was doing what she had to do, but is furious with Cordelia for having married Hank and letting him turn her against her own mother. They learn that Hank's father, Harrison, was his primary employer, and they cast a spell to make his corporation begin losing money, the better to weaken him. Later, Fiona attempts to out Misty as the next Supreme. When Misty proves uninterested in the position, Fiona tempts her by inviting a White Witch... Stevie Nicks, Misty's favorite singer. All the girls are enraptured by Stevie, except Madison, who is upset that Misty is the new Supreme-apparent, and, in her jealousy, goes to extreme lengths. Meanwhile, as Fiona becomes ever more ill, she asks Marie for the secret of her eternal youth, and Marie tells her the terrible price. As Fiona brings the Axeman a proposition and learns a startling truth about herself, Nan, wielding her growing powers, confronts Joan about Luke's death. And later, Marie and Fiona make a terrible deal – a deal involving a most unexpected betrayal.

During the Summer of 2013 I set out on a mission to entertain my (somewhat grumpy) neighbor with an outdoor embroidery project on their discarded sofa that would make the seemingly unlovable couch more lovable. Weeks had gone by without a single bite; no one wanted that sad brown three-seater.

I gave it a voice.

More specifically, I gave it Lionel Richie’s lovable voice, and the rest is history.

It has often been claimed that “monsters”–supernatural creatures with bodies composed from multiple species–play a significant part in the thought and imagery of all people from all times. The Origins of Monsters advances an alternative view. Composite figurations are intriguingly rare and isolated in the art of the prehistoric era. Instead it was with the rise of cities, elites, and cosmopolitan trade networks that “monsters” became widespread features of visual production in the ancient world. Showing how these fantastic images originated and how they were transmitted, David Wengrow identifies patterns in the records of human image-making and embarks on a search for connections between mind and culture.

Wengrow asks: Can cognitive science explain the potency of such images? Does evolutionary psychology hold a key to understanding the transmission of symbols? How is our making and perception of images influenced by institutions and technologies? Wengrow considers the work of art in the first age of mechanical reproduction, which he locates in the Middle East, where urban life began. Comparing the development and spread of fantastic imagery across a range of prehistoric and ancient societies, including Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and China, he explores how the visual imagination has been shaped by a complex mixture of historical and universal factors.

Examining the reasons behind the dissemination of monstrous imagery in ancient states and empires, The Origins of Monsters sheds light on the relationship between culture and cognition.

In real life, Florence Gardiner (c. 1891-?) was a pioneering advocate of Asian martial arts as feminist self defense. Her theatrical and literary alter ego, "Florence Le Mar, the Ju-Jitsu Girl" may just qualify as one of the first superheroines.

Florence and her husband, professional wrestler and showman Joe Gardiner, toured vaudeville theaters throughout New Zealand prior to the First World War. Their signature act showed audiences how a Lady might defeat an aggressive Hooligan (mugger) via the skilled application of jujitsu.

According to a 1913 poem promoting the vaudeville act:

In 'The Hooligan and Lady', they are smart, clean, clever, straight.

No act in this world is better – fast, and strictly up-to-date.

This act's a small-sized drama – constructed round Jitsu

A Japanese discovery, wherein they show to you,

How it's possible for a lady, when molested by a cad,

Maybe tackled by a robber, in fact, any man that's bad,

Can hold her own against him and quickly put him through,

When she knows the locks and holds – pertaining to the art Jitsu.

So clever is the lady that when the tough with pistol, knife

And bludgeon tries to rough her and mayhap take her life,

Like lightning-flash she meets him and quickly stays his hand,

By tumbling him hard earthwards – I tell you it is grand –

And proves to me and all here what women folk can do

When attacked, if they but study Miss Le Mar at Ju Jitsu.

These techniques were also explained and illustrated in Florence's book, The Life and Adventures of Miss Florence Le Mar, the World's Famous Ju-Jitsu Girl, which is undoubtedly one of the rarest and strangest self defence manuals ever written.

In addition to jujitsu lessons, the book offered a great deal of feminist polemic and a series of six fantastical tales describing her hair-raising adventures as the Ju-Jitsu Girl, taking on desperadoes including opium smugglers in Sydney, crooked gamblers in New York City and an English "lunatic" who believed he was a bear. The Jujitsu Girl defended the weak and innocent, solved crimes and punished villains through her mastery of the martial arts, pre-dating comic book superheroines like Lady Luck, Black Canary, Phantom Lady and Wonder Woman by nearly three decades.

Though not without charm, these short stories have the sharp corners and hard edges typical of early 20th century dime novels. They are also undeniably theatrical and, in combination with Florence's biography and her fierce feminism, inspired the production of a play, The Hooligan and the Lady, which was a hit at the 2011 New Zealand Fringe Festival.
