Arthur C. Clarke didn't just put the smackdown on A.I. skeptics — he also predicted the future of compuers with pinpoint accuracy, in this recently released 1974 interview. Not just the personal computer, but telecommuting and internet commerce.

The Ever-Changing Role of Doctor Who's Human Companions


Doctor Who has changed a lot over the years, including its format and its setting. But one of the biggest changes might be the nature of the show's companions, from protagonists to sidekicks... and back again.


In this post, looking at the split between classic and new Doctor Who, commenter lightninglouie looks at how the mantle of mystery had shifted from the Doctor to his companions, over the course of the re-boot — and how the pendulum might just swing back the other way with the newest Doctor:



With Rose, you can see how much the show has changed since the beginning. She was the audience identification character for all of the first and most of second season, because the Doctor was supposed to be strange and mysterious, too alien for casual audiences to relate to. By the middle of the Tennant era the Doctor was clearly the main character, because viewers had come to trust and identify with him. With Moffat as the showrunner, the roles are reversed; the Doctor is definitely the main viewpoint character, and, as another commenter observed last night, the companions — Amy, River, and Clara — are mysteries to be solved. I have to wonder if the roles will switch back with Clara as the protagonist and Capaldi's Doctor as the enigmatic, otherly character.


There is a clear parallel with the original series here. During the Hartnell years, the Doctor was a mysterious, even unsympathetic character and the Earthborn companions were our identification figures. By the '70s, under Pertwee and Baker, the Doctor was the hero, and the companion was just a sidekick. In fact, by the end of the '70s there were no human characters in the main cast at all — just two rather flirty Time Lords and a robot dog.



So what do you think? Will Capaldi bring with him a return of the Doctor's alien-side? Or is the newest Doctor going to tap even deeper into his humanity, while his companions teeter on the brink of their own?

Why wine and tea taste so good


Wine and tea are both delicious, this we know and have always known. But, new research has finally given us the precise locus of just where their deliciousness comes from.


Today, we took a look at the most amazing scientific breakthroughs that this year has seen in a pretty incredible year in science. And commenter Sparrowgrass gave us one more breakthrough to add to the list: "The [discovery of the] tannosome, the plant organelle where tannins are stored. Finally we might see some science-led advances in tea agriculture, brewing and technology."


Yes, scientists finally found the source of where the tannins in our tea and wine come from this year. Why is this important? Well, two reasons, one of which we've known about for a long time: taste. When they come up against our tastebuds, tannins import a quick shock of bitterness. But, when they're allowed to mellow with age (perhaps as part of a nice Malbec), we start to experience the taste of tannins as an almost textural sensation — the famed "dryness" of wine.


The second reason this discovery is important is that, although we've known what tannins do for a long time, just where in the plant they come from has remained a mystery — and finding their source opens up a lot of possibilities for bioengineering. "People have been trying to figure this out since the 1960s," Ian Burbulis, a professor of biochemistry and molecular genetics at the University of Virginia explained to Scientific America. "By understanding the molecular mechanism, we can engineer systems that direct payloads within different compartments of the cell, which could be used in anything from biofuels to changing the content of wine."

Why a shrinking Y chromosome still doesn't mean the end of men


Is the Y chromosome really headed towards disappearing? Well, perhaps (give or take 10 million years or so.) But most likely not.


In a Q&A today with science historian Sarah Richardson on genetics and sex differences, commenter decemberfifthburner asked about reports that the Y chromosome could be headed for extinction. The Y chromosome doesn't use standard recombination for repairs, says Richardson, hence the concern over shedding genes. But new research shows that the Y-chromosome is using a recombination-like process to make repairs:



It's certainly a fact that the evolution of the Y chromosome (from its original status as an X chromosome), because it is passed clonally from male to male and does not repair through standard recombination, has involved the sloughing off hundreds of genes. This is true in every sex chromosome system – over millions of years, the clonally inherited chromosome in the sex chromosome pair loses its function other than sex determination and diminishes in size and gene count. Now, is the human Y chromosome going extinct? In some species of voles, it already has, so it's certainly a theoretical possibility.


But why are we so concerned about this now? The Y going extinct isn't happening any time soon, if it all (estimates run in the 10 million years+ range). And, as in voles, the disappearance of the Y doesn't, in principle, mean the loss of the male sex. David Page at MIT has discovered that recombination-like processes in the Y chromosome ("gene conversion") may help repair the human Y and be keeping it in a holding pattern from further degeneration.



So, with a repair process in sight and a timeline measured in millions, just why has the idea of a disappearing Y-chromosome captured the public imagination? Richardson says it may have more to do with culture than research:



I think the popular concern about the status of the Y is continuous with concerns about the decline of men in a postfeminist age and with other biologistic discourses about males sperm count decline and males' lack of evolutionary adaptation to the supposedly "feminized" environment of the post-industrial workforce. Y chromosome degeneration theories are truly a node where a good understanding of the cultural gender context helps understand the shape of the scientific debate.
