The good folks over at Slate put together a nice little glossary of terms from the show which may leave some folks scratching their heads. You may be a whiz at navigating your way around M-brane theory but do you know what a 419 is? What about the "psychosphere"? That sexy someone at the party might be impressed by your knowledge of Carcosa but when you tell them their body is a paraphilic lovemap you are getting laid for sure.

This is the cutest, and it'll fill your heart with joy for the rest of the day. Who doesn't want to dress up in costumes and take pictures with man's best friend?

Photographer Rocio Preciado of Cuije Photo did this shoot, explaining it this way:

Once upon a time, in a galaxy not so far away, a furry little dachshund was born, the force was good in him, so they named him Chewbacca.

Celebrating his 12th birthday, the long haired dachshund invited his friends Han Solo and Darth Vader to a picnic at Kashyyyk, his home planet, where every day, a new adventure begins.

You would think that a dachshund and Star Wars don't mix, but you would be wrong, growing up a Star Wars fan (it her case it was more like a religion) photographer Rocio Preciado knew just what to do when the opportunity to photograph Chewbacca came along, even making up the Han Solo costume from scratch by herself, that is the kind of attention to detail that sets her apart from the rest.

Let's just wait and see what Chewie has planned for his next birthday!!

Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart take over Late Night onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart take over Late Night

The best friends and frequent collaborators appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers Friday night to promote their Broadway performances of Waiting for Godot and No Man's Land before McKellen decided to live out his dream of hosting a late night show of his very own. Stewart was obviously booked as McKellen's first guest.

No offense, Meyers (truly – you had a good, brief run), but I think we all know who we really want co-hosting Late Night.

And yes, it is sheer perfection.

Soundcloud user FLIPSHOT sampled Jeff Goldblum's ridiculous laugh from the helicopter scene at the beginning of Jurassic Park and turned it into "Hahahrawrrahaha," a 188-second breakbeat tribute to the randy, snarl-like noises that have been known to pour out of Goldblum's mouth.

The scene in question, for the uninitiated:

Goldblum May not be appearing in Jurassic World, but this should assuage your disappointment. Easily our favorite treatment of the Goldblum guffaw since this little masterpiece.

Lose Yourself in these Stunning Lunar Maps S

From the Lunar and Planetary Institute's Lunar Map Catalogue comes a gorgeous series of charts of the Moon's nearside, farside and poles.

Click here to see in hi-res [6105 x 4277]. Click here to see in VERY hi-res [12211 x 8553]

According to the chart, the features depicted were "interpreted from the photographic records of Lunar Orbiter Missions I, II, III, IV and V," and "feature names were adopted by the International Astronomical Union in 1935 and amended in 1961, 1964 and 1970." Below are the farside and polar charts (click here and here for hi-res options). Not quite as colorful as these images from the USGS's Geological Atlas of the Moon, but every bit as stunning, in their own right (hardcore geology types might also enjoy comparing the two maps to see if they can correctly identify which regions of the non-geological map are composed of crater, dome, mare, or plains material.)

If you're into maps and are not already familiar with the Lunar and Planetary Society's extensive collection, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Fair warning: that catalogue will devour massive quantities of your time if you aren't careful.

Is everything finally coming together on Helix? onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Is everything finally coming together on Helix?

Is everything finally coming together on Helix? S

There were all the revelations you could want on last night's Helix, plus some you probably didn't want. Get ready to worship your psychic zombie goo barf god! Spoilers ahead.

This episode was one of those rapid-fire deals where everything is coming together in ways that aren't entirely unexpected but are still kind of creepy anyway. Let's go over the facts as we now know them.

1. Hiroshi is a total player.

Does this guy basically have love affairs with every amazing female scientist he comes into contact with? First he had an intense relationship with mad scientist-cum-entrepreneur Constance (whose head he lovingly preserved last week), which got him this Arctic Biosystems gig. Then he fell madly for Jane, Julia's mother, whom he describes as one of the most brilliant scientists he ever knew.

So yes, all of you who guessed that Hiroshi is Julia's father — he IS her father. "You have your father's eyes," he says creepily to her in the revelation scene, baring his silver peepers. Probably not the most sensitive way to go about this, Hiroshi, but whatever. Julia raises the question about how he manages to look exactly the same age as he did in the picture of him with her as a child, but he dismisses it.

Is everything finally coming together on Helix? S

Julia was already primed to be grossed out by this revelation anyway, after discovering that all those summers she spent in "Montana" were actually in a fake cabin build below "Level X," the ultra-basement of the Arctic Biosystems facility. Sooooo, was her mother Jane working with Hiroshi? Was she a prisoner? Did she and Hiroshi agree to turn Julia into some kind of super-baby? What did Constance have to do with all of this?

Is everything finally coming together on Helix? S

I kind of love and kind of hate the fact that so much of the plot in this show boils down to Hiroshi's science nerd love life. One the one hand, Hiroshi is undeniably snacky and I love that he only boinks super scientists. On the other hand, can we please have a show that isn't about daddy issues?

2. Peter is the Lord of the Zombies

It's kind of like being Lord of the Dance, except you have to drink the black goo barf of all the other zombies before you jump up and start throbbing and dancing and forcing all the other zombies to kneel before you. Seriously, the barf drinking was gross. Way to go, Helix! Anyway, that's what Peter is busy doing with all the zombies down in Level X. The zombie love-in wouldn't be that much of a problem except for the fact that all of Arctic Biosystems' secret copies of every dangerous pathogen in the universe are also kept down there.

Is everything finally coming together on Helix? S

Miksa forces Hiroshi to reveal his secret plans to Alan and Sarah because he's done with the whole "Hiroshi is my daddy" thing. When Hiroshi describes making the virus, he insists it's actually "something better" than the killer virus that Constance wanted. I'm failing to see why, but maybe we'll find out. Also, he reveals that parent company Ilaria will be sending an army to crush the lab soon. So they'd better get those original vials of black goo zombie virus stuff from Level X right away!

But first, we have to figure out that freezing the zombies slows them down, which involves a bunch of stuff where there is zombie purloining and Sarah finally faints and admits she's dying and then Julia has to listen to Sarah moaning about how Alan should sleep with her again. Because Alan, like Hiroshi, somehow always gets to score with every cute scientist within 20 feet of his position.

3. The pathogen room is so hilariously awful/great.

I just love the bit where Julia and Alan are going through the vials of pathogens while frozen zombies drool on the window and watch. It gets especially great when she starts finding vials of the black death and "Justinian plague." OK WHUT. Nobody even knows what the Justinian plague was, let alone has a freakin' vial of it.

Is everything finally coming together on Helix? S

"They have more than the CDC does!" Julia exclaims. Yeah, that's because they also have all the plagues ever unleashed in the Judge Dredd comics, and that disease from Andromeda Strain, and whatever it was that caused everyone to grow mushroom heads in The Last of Us. This scene is like going into the Toon Town version of a weird science show.

4. Miksa's family reunion . . . sigh.

I'm a Miksa fan, but that was really underwhelming. Brothers punching each other, yay! Please return to my earlier request that we not have a show about daddy issues again. Somehow daddy issues always lead to brothers punching each other boringly while women watch and try to pretend it's amazing.

Is everything finally coming together on Helix? S

Hopefully this means that Sergio has been redeemed and can get some genuine love from Miksa's sister. But first! They must stop the army that Constance inexplicably dispatched to destroy the Inuit village!

5. Mr. Character-We-Never-Met-Before is in a pivotal position!

Hello, guy whose only lines involve complaining about not getting a paycheck! Did you just parachute in from the Alien franchise or something? Because in this show, everybody is being paid handsomely and that's kind of important to the plot!

Is everything finally coming together on Helix? S

Oh well, never you mind about those details because you're just there to be the random Ilaria mole (or maybe a corporate spy from elsewhere) who steals the last vials of the zombie goo viruses and heads out into the whirling snow as the episode ends.

Over 120 spoof papers withdrawn from major journal publishers S

The publishers Springer and IEEE announced they would remove the papers from their subscription services after French researcher Cyril Labbé demonstrated the works were not original scientific work at all, but rather "computer-generated nonsense."

Top Photo via robotlab

Via Nature News:

Among the works were, for example, a paper published as a proceeding from the 2013 International Conference on Quality, Reliability, Risk, Maintenance, and Safety Engineering, held in Chengdu, China. (The conference website says that all manuscripts are "reviewed for merits and contents".) The authors of the paper, entitled 'TIC: a methodology for the construction of e-commerce', write in the abstract that they "concentrate our efforts on disproving that spreadsheets can be made knowledge-based, empathic, and compact".

It's still unclear who submitted the papers, or why, but they're easy to spot according to Labbé, who has built an applet that users can use to upload papers and determine whether they've been generated using SCIgen, so it's unsettling to think that they could make their way to such esteemed publications (and in their subscription offerings, no less).

Labbé developed a way to automatically detect manuscripts composed by a piece of software called SCIgen, which randomly combines strings of words to produce fake computer-science papers. SCIgen was invented in 2005 by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge to prove that conferences would accept meaningless papers — and, as they put it, "to maximize amusement" (see 'Computer conference welcomes gobbledegook paper'). A related program generates random physics manuscript titles on the satirical website arXiv vs. snarXiv. SCIgen is free to download and use, and it is unclear how many people have done so, or for what purposes. SCIgen's output has occasionally popped up at conferences, when researchers have submitted nonsense papers and then revealed the trick.

Read more about Labbé's revelation at Nature News. Curious if you can distinguish between a spoof paper and the real deal? Have a go at arXiv vs. snarXiv (I managed to get 7 out of 10 on my last go, but I'll admit I've scored much lower in the past).

The Wild Hunt is no match for Wesen conservatism on Grimm onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com The Wild Hunt is no match for Wesen conservatism on Grimm

The Wild Hunt is no match for Wesen conservatism on Grimm S

Remember this bit from my recap of Grimm's last episode, the first installment of this two-parter? "I can't help but feel we're going to watch the next episode and feel like they both could have been condensed into a really good single episode." Am… am I psychic?

Because "Revelation" was even slower than "The Wild Hunt," and even if you cut away all the needless meandering in both episodes, I don't know if you'd even have enough for a regular episode. Let's do the word count thing, shall we?

• Most of the episode is Monroe and his terrible parents, who hate both mixed-Wesen marriages and Grimms. They eventually come around.

• In a not particularly surprising twist, Stefania is working with the royal family, so Renard has his agents hide Adalind away.

• And those evil Wesen who kept scalping people in uniform? They go after Nick. Nick wins.

61 words. To be fair, I could use more, but I don't think they would be to Grimm's benefit. I could point out that Nick's mom and dad are COMPLETELY AGAINST EVERYTHING IN MONROE'S LIFE TO THE POINT OF DISOWNING HIM but then Monroe' dad sees Nick fight alongside his son, and cuts everybody some slack (far more terrible is Monroe's mom and Rosalee sniffing each other, and suddenly her racism is fixed).

I could mention that the scalping enthusiast Wildesheer, who are not only supposed to be great warriors but part of The Wild Hunt which brings thunder and wind and disaster, actually turn out to be three rednecks with stringy hair and shitty taste in coats, and who Nick, Monroe and Monroe's dad dispatch by giving haircuts. It's not even that difficult for them.

I have no idea why this was turned into a two-parter. Hopefully next week will be better; it looks like Adalind is finally having her baby, so maybe she'll be in the episode for more than three minutes total. Or maybe she'll actually come back to Portland! Ha ha I'm joking she's never directly interacting with another main cast member again.

The Wild Hunt is no match for Wesen conservatism on Grimm S

Assorted Musings:

• Really, Wildesheer? I know you liked killing "warriors in uniform," but a forest ranger? Really?

• Here's a fun game: Replay the first scene of Monroe's folks meeting Nick and freaking out, and whenever Munroe's mom and dad say "Grimm" pretend they're saying "homosexual" or "black person." Still works!

• Grumpiness aside, seeing Monroe and Nick stock up on weapons and go charging into the night together, by themselves, was a welcome sight. More of that, please.

• At the very end, Monroe's dad says some nonsense about "The Wild Hunt" portending "something, somewhere, that will change the world!" It's obviously Adalind's baby, but given all the hype that the Wild Hunt got and completely failed to pay out forgive if I don't scoot to the edge of my seat just yet.

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Watch the opening scene of the Veronica Mars movie

More of a recap of the show's original three-season run than a foundational scene to the new movie, itself, the two-minute title sequence to the new Veronica Mars movie still has us damn excited to meet the "marshmallow" Veronica says she's become.

Of course, the best way to prepare for the movie's March 14th release would be to mainline the first three seasons. Starting now. Word is the movie doesn't waste much time getting newcomers to the world of Veronica Mars up to speed and, for the most part, stands alone in terms of its storytelling. Hopefully this quick intro is a reflection of that.

Meet the Exosuit – a 6.5-foot tall, 530 pound, aluminum alloy atmospheric diving system that stands to change the way we explore the ocean deep. Designed to envelop a single human occupant in surface atmosphere conditions at depths of up to 1,000 feet, stepping into this articulated, human-shaped shell is like putting on a custom-tailored submarine.

On display at the American Museum of Natural History until March 5, the Exosuit pictured here is built and designed by Vancouver's Nuytco Research. Currently the only suit of its kind, similar suits have been worn to perform internal repairs on NYC water supply pipes, but the first production Exosuit will be put through its paces this July, when researchers on the Stephen J. Barlow Bluewater Expedition will use it to explore a gaping stretch of ocean floor called "The Canyons." For more details on the suit, check out Leslie Horn's in-depth feature over at Gizmodo.
