Playwright and screenwriter David Mamet (Wag The Dog, The Unit, Hoffa) is developing is turning Christianity's Seven Deadly Sins into a television miniseries. Color us intrigued.

Variety is reporting Mamet will use "the themes invoked by the seven deadly sins will serve as a backdrop of a series of interconnected stories the reflect on the human condition through Mamet's distinctive lens." Which means Pride, Greed, Gluttony, Wrath, Envy, Lust and Sloth will all get their own little special on Fox. Hiring Mamet actually has us pretty excited about the potential of this miniseries. Hopefully we'll be getting something a little more like Seven, and a lot less like The Passion of the Christ.

It's not made completely out of Lego bricks — if you watch the video, there are some gauges in there, and probably a few other things — but it's still a car, made with 500,000+ Legos, that actually drives. Holy crap.

The car was crowdfunded and assembled by "Melbourne entrepreneur and marketing guy" Steve Sammartino and "self-taught teenage technology genius from Romania who Steve met on the internet" Raul Oaida. Here are the specs:

• The engine is made from standard Lego pieces and runs on air!

• The engine has four orbital engines and a total of 256 pistons.

• More than 500,000 LEGO pieces.

• Top speed around 20-30km (We drive it slow as are scared of giant lego explosion)

• Built in Romania and shipped to a secret location in Melbourne.

• It's a Hot Rod design, mainly because hot rods are cool.

The "giant Lego explosion" referred to above is because the engine is running on compressed air, which means if the Lego bricks that make it don't hold together... boom, the engine explodes and a 2x4 Lego brick shoots straight through your skull. But that risk is a small price to pay for putting humanity on a path where we can assemble all our own vehicles in our homes, and for that, Melbourne entrepreneur and marketing guy and self-taught teenage technology genius from Romania, we salute you.

And I know exactly where these guys should drive this thing.

S When Marnie Was There, the 1967 novel by Joan G. Robinson. It was #18 on Hayao Miyazaki's list of recommended children's books, so this shouldn't be a shock, although it's worth pointing out that Marnie will be directed by The Secret World of Arriety's Hiromasa Yonebayashi, as Miyazaki still maintains he's retired.

If you read this summary of When Marnie Was There, courtesy of Amazon, it sounds like it was written with a Ghibli movie in mind all along:

Anna hasn't a friend in the world - until she meets Marnie among the sand dunes. But Marnie isn't all she seems...An atmospheric ghost story with truths to tell about friendship, families and loneliness. Sounds messy. That being said, no movie could be as scary as the horrifying illustrations by Stephen Gammell.

Deadline is reporting that CBS Films has picked up the rights to the classic horror anthology Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, with Saw screenwriters Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton on to translate the many, many short stories into a single film.

How will a collection of scary stories work as a movie? Here's the pitch: The film will follow a group of "outcast kids who stand up to their fears to save their town when nightmares come to life," so the stories are all really scary dreams.

Not sure how to feel about this project. But hopefully it won't be as gutting as when the original illustrations were hideously replaced in a new printing to make the whole series more kid-friendly. But then again, Hollywood is full of surprises.
