BBC hat ‘nen faszinierenden Artikel über die weltgrößte „Cloning Factory“ in China, die im Jahr 500 geklonte Schweine „produziert“.

The first shed contains 90 animals in two long rows. They look perfectly normal, as one would expect, but each of them is carrying cloned embryos. Many are clones themselves. This place produces an astonishing 500 cloned pigs a year: China is exploiting science on an industrial scale.

To my surprise, we’re taken to see how the work is done. A room next to the pens serves as a surgery and a sow is under anaesthetic, lying on her back on an operating table. An oxygen mask is fitted over her snout and she’s breathing steadily. Blue plastic bags cover her trotters.

Two technicians have inserted a fibre-optic probe to locate the sow’s uterus. A third retrieves a small test-tube from a fridge: these are the blastocysts, early stage embryos prepared in a lab. In a moment, they will be implanted.

Syfy's Bitten is full of sex and werewolves, but not much of a plot onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com

onlinecollegedegreee.blogspot.com Syfy's Bitten is full of sex and werewolves, but not much of a plot

Syfy's Bitten is full of sex and werewolves, but not much of a plot S

Do you like sex and/or werewolves? Then you're still going to be hard-pressed to like Syfy's Bitten, at least from its painfully slow first episode. Sure, it's chock full of naked Laura Vandervoort and mediocre CG wolves, but somehow it forgot to have things happen.

I can describe all the meaningful details of the hour-long episode in 100 words. Somebody spot me:

Elena Danvers is a werewolf living in Vancouver with a boyfriend who doesn't know her real nature. She's estranged from her family/pack for unknown reasons, but a "wolf attack" caused by a rogue, unknown werewolf near the family's home causes the head, Jeremy, to call everyone together to deal with the situation. Elena has some undisclosed issues with her family, particularly a member named Clay, so she waits until the end of the episode to arrive at the mansion. Also, Elena is generally trying to not turn into a wolf, which means the transformations can happen randomly.

That's 96 words. Note, there were a lot of scenes with Elena's boyfriend's family, particularly his mom disliking her for no apparent reason, I'm pretty sure this stuff is never going to turn into an engaging storyline, and will just be a conflict Elena will occasionally indulge in to pad out the episode.

Now, two things before you all scorn me for pre-hating this show: First, I absolutely don't hate Bitten, if only because not enough happened to hate. Seriously, it's like we got the first half of a pilot that was supposed to be a two-hour premiere. I just don't have enough material to judge it yet.

Second, and here's what I find so weird, is that I know the show is going some interesting places, because the "This Season on Bitten!" preview had some genuinely interesting stuff in it! (Spoiler warning for the two people who think me describing the preview video which aired directly following the episode to be spoilers). The "mutt" who killed the lady is actually only one of many werewolves who are murdering people, because it turns out that someone is turning serial killers into werewolves to make them better at serial killing, which is breaking one of those Pact thingies monsters hiding amongst use to agree not to get themselves noticed (thank, White Wolf!). That's interesting to me! That, my friends, is what I'd call a hook, and I think might have been better served in last night's episode that's all about family drama, except the main character basically doesn't even go home until the last two minutes.

So one or more of these serial killwolves is out to bring attention to the Danvers family, and that's bad news. And the "next time on" video gave just enough detail about Elena's issues with Clay to pique my interest — they got a little kissin' cousin' than going on, apparently, and either it's forbidden by werewolf law or they just know it's a little gross. All of this is interesting, and I don't know why they refused to put any of it in the first episode — just so we had something beyond "sexually active werewolf with family issues returns home but does not have chance to enter house."

Assorted Musings:

  • I should mention that these "werewolves" just turn into wolves — no one's running around as an anthropomorphic wolf man. This is a little disappointing, mostly because it removes one major potential conflict — it's a lot easier to explain away a wolf than it is a werewolf.

  • The boyfriend's family stuff was a complete drag. We barely get to know anything about Elena's guy, and then we get shoved with his mom and two sisters, whose sole plot contribution is finding Elena a pretty dress.

  • Another thing that is interesting that the show completely fails to even acknowledge: Elena is the only female werewolf on the planet. I had completely forgotten that detail until I saw it on the Wikipedia page to look up character names. YOU HAVE INTERESTING QUALITIES, BITTEN, PLEASE DO NOT FEEL THE NEED TO HIDE THEM FROM US

  • I know pilots by their very nature have to deal with a lot of establishing relationships and exposition, but man, was Bitten clunky. "Hello, older brother!"

  • The first female victim decides to leave a bar by walking home through the woods. What is she, a French peasant girl?

  • George and Josh from the Being Human shows would scoff at Elena's shoddy transformation night preparation. At least put your clothes in a bag, woman!

Okay, now we're really excited for Terry Gilliam's long-delayed The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. The director just released some pretty compelling concept art, which has us hopeful for the film's future. We need a good one from you, Gilliam!

The director took to his Facebook page to announce that the plans for the wayward flick The Man Who Killed Don Quixote are BACK ON, and to celebrate here's a glimpse at what we could see in theaters.

Dreams of Don Quixote have begun again. Dave Warren has started doodling. Will we get the old bastard back on his horse this year? Human sacrifices welcomed. Stay tuned.

Honestly, we just love this. Fingers crossed!

Breaking: ESP still bullshit, say scientists S

Some people claim to have a sixth sense — an ability to innately sense imminent danger or the presence of an unseen person. But scientists now say there's a more reasonable explanation after discovering that people can reliably detect a change in their surroundings — even when they can't see or explain what had changed.

A number of people claim to be able to sense changes directly with their mind, a phenomenon known as extrasensory perception, or a "sixth sense." They can do this, they say, without having to rely on the conventional physical senses like vision, hearing, taste, smell and touch, or the senses that go beyond the standard five.

But new research out of the University of Melbourne shows that, while people can reliably sense changes they could not visually identify, this ability does not have to be attributed to ESP or a sixth sense.

Detecting Differences

For the study, which was led by Dr. Piers Howe from the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences, participants were shown pairs of color photos, both of the same female. In some cases, the photos would vary, such as a different hairstyle. Each of these images were observed for about 1.5 seconds with a one second break inbetween. Once all photos had been observed, each participant was asked if a change had occurred and, if so, to identify the change from a list of nine possibilities.

Breaking: ESP still bullshit, say scientists

Results showed that each person was good at detecting a change even though they couldn't say, exactly, what had changed. For example, observers noticed that the two photos had different amounts of red or green, but they were not able to use this information to determine that the person had changed the color of their hat. The researchers ruled out the possibility that the participants were using some kind of unknown verification strategy or were simply guessing.

"Mindsight"

So, this isn't a slam-dunk against the possibility of ESP, but according to Howe, this research is among the first to show that people can sense information they cannot verbalize.

A possible explanation for this trait is something called "mindsight" — our ability to detect changes before we're able to identify them. It's conceivable that the brain is somehow (unconsciously) collecting and processing information about a certain scene or layout. Or, in the words of the authors:

[S]eeing (i.e., identifying) a change may involve forming a coherent percept of the object that is changed, a process that would presumably involve attention. Without attention, only the underlying components of the objects, i.e. the features, could be detected which may provide enough information to detect a change, but not enough to allow the observer to identify which object has been changed.

Howe and his team suggest that the purpose of this type of detection is to alert us to the possible presence of a change so that we then know to search for this change using our focused attention.

WB may shoot Justice League immediately after Batman Vs. Superman S

Please head to your nearest salt dispensary and grab a choice-looking grain first, but the rumor mill says WB/DC will be shooting a Justice League movie back-to-back with Batman Vs. Superman, turning them into one extended shoot, but truth be told this rumor makes a lot of sense.

As Latino Review points out, there are several reasons that point to a double-shoot: 1) the schedules of the stars involved, especially Ben Affleck, who it will be much easier to keep rather than try to schedule back for filming next year; 2) the multitude of heroes being cast, which seem more reasonable if they'll be introduced in two movies instead of just one; 3) there's also a rumor that Batman Vs. Superman will end have a cliffhanger ending, which WB/DC might theoretically feel safer doing if a sequel was ensured to be coming out the following year, but this is two rumors trying to support each other, so it's kind of tenuous.

So, yeah. If true, I think this is a very smart decision on WB's part. Feels weird typing it out like that.

How is Google involved in James Frey's YA book and movie deal?

James Frey, the writer notorious for his not-quite-factual memoir A Million Little Pieces, just landed a $2 million deal with Fox for the movie rights to his upcoming young adult novel, Endgame. But how is Google involved in this Hunger Games-esque project?

Deadline reports that Fox nabbed the Endgame film rights for somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 million. Here's the pitch:

In a world similar to Earth, there are 12 bloodlines, or races. Each bloodline has a champion between the ages of 13 and 17 who is trained as a warrior and is always ready to do battle. When they turn 18, the teen warrior behind them gets promoted. This has been the case for hundreds of years, but no one remembers why — they're always ready for some sort of battle to take place, but it never does. But the tradition continues. And then one day they're called to fight, and all the bloodlines but the winners will be exterminated. They're fighting to be the last race.

Fellow NewsCorp company HarperCollins will be publishing the book, which is intended to be the first in the series. Frey's last foray into YA science fiction was I am Number Four and its sequels, which was based on an idea by Frey and seemed like it was begging to be turned into a movie — which it was. The feature film adaptation of I am Number Four wasn't well received, but given that Frey has seemed intent on churning out Hollywood-friendly books through his Full Fathom Five production company, it's not surprising that he's launching another book series intended for the screen. But as the LA Times notes, many folks are already accusing Frey of cynically piggybacking on the success of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games franchise, with those warriors from 12 bloodlines too closely evoking the battling Tributes from Collins' 12 Districts.

And what about Google? Deadling says, "Details will be forthcoming, but Google is involved." Are they getting into film production, or is this a sign that Frey is looking to add another medium to his transmedia fiction?

Why our memories don't begin until we're three years old

Everyone has a first memory, but the average age that those first memories begin isn't until 3- and 1/2-years-old. A new theory explains just why that may be so.

"Every one of us has a personal 'beginning of time,' the first events we recall from our lives," Nautilus magazine explains. To get at why that time begins typically after age 3, Nautilus references the "pasta theory" of memory and the work of Patricia Bauer from Emory University:

Children are actively forming memories even at a very young age, but they lose them faster than adults do. "I compare memory to a colander," Bauer says. "If you're cooking fettucine, the pasta stays in. But if you're cooking orzo, it goes right through the holes. The immature brain is a lot like a colander with big holes, and the little memories are like the orzo. As you get older, you're either getting bigger pasta or a net with smaller holes." . . . In a forthcoming article in Journal of Experimental Psychology, Bauer reports on interviews with 100 children and 20 of their parents, which showed that the forgetting patterns of children and adults are quite different. Children forget things at a steady rate that doesn't depend on the age of the memory. By contrast, adults tend to hang on more to their older memories. After many years, the memories become sticky, like the fettucine that won't slip through the holes. Adult memories also come with more contextual information, more "who-what-when-where-why," which may make them stickier.

So what was your own "beginning of time"? And what age were you? Tell us about it in the comments.

Human dwellings must seem stupidly boring for cats who, in their natural state, are fond of climbing, jumping, and perching. Looking to overcome this egregious oversight, German company Goldtaze has put out this incredible line of handcrafted designer cat climbing furniture.

The brain-child of Stefan Hofmann, the items were created for his own cat, Mowgli (who he inherited when he moved into a new apartment).
