There is perhaps nothing more poignant than an abandoned prison. When you see these haunting images, it's hard not to imagine what once went on in these now-crumbling rooms.
A jail on the island of Procida in Italy, built in 1563 as a castle, transformed into a prison in 1815, closed in 1988.

Vilvoorde Prison, Vilvoorde, Belgium, opened in the late 18th century as a prison, later used as a military hospital, barracks and a dentention centre. It was closed in 1974.

The Sinop Fortress Prison, a Turkish state prison inside a fortress in Sinop, Turkey. Opened in 1887, closed in 1997. Now it's open to public.

A top secret prison and labor camp on Goli Otok (Barren Island), now in Croatia. The uninhabited island was made into a high-security, secret prison for political prisoners, used between 1949 and 1956 by the Yugoslavian government.
