Vocativ put together this visual analysis of the relationship between the top 50 movies of 2013 that passed and failed the Bechdel Test, and how they did at the box office.
Now, of course merely passing the Bechdel Test doesn't necessarily have any implications for whether or not a movie is fun or enjoyable - and neither does failing it. You'll notice that Pacific Rim failed the Bechdel Test, and yet I would hazard a guess that most of the ODeck thought that was a fucking fantastic movie! I would argue that some of the films that passed the Bechdel Test in a "dubious" way are less dubious examples than the creators of the infographic might think, but sometimes that's a matter of interpretation, and sometimes of degree.
But it is sobering to think, when considering this interesting correlation, that something as simple as having two female characters have a conversation with each other about something other than a male character seems to be so hard to achieve, even for movies that are really great.
Think about it. Frozen passed the Bechdel Test with flying colors almost from the first line:
"Do you wanna build a snowman?"
The solution to passing the Bechdel Test, of course, and hopefully to more good movies, is to add more female characters. Bonus points if they're well-rounded, with their own stories and internal motivations.
