Canada might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of urban exploration in North America, you know, being only 147 years old.. however, each province is home to some of the coolest abandoned buildings, tunnels, and towns in the country, giving adventurers a vast array of urban ruin to explore.
Lower Bay Station
One of the coolest abandoned places in Toronto is the Lower Bay Station, a kind of holy grail for urban exploration within the city. Bay Station was officially in service from February to September of 1966, before being abandoned after only 6 months. In recent years the station has been used as movie sets, and has been the backdrop for photo shoots.
Toronto Power Generating
Built in 1906 the Beaux-Arts style station was built by the Electrical Development Company just outside of Toronto. The plant closed on February 15th, 1974, and was officially named a national historic site of Canada in 1983. Since then the plant has become a favorite spot amongst urban explorers.
Kitsault, BC
This abandoned ghost town is an incorporated settlement and began as a remote mining town in 1918. In 2004 the ghost town was purchased for $7 million, and is in talks of being turned into a site for natural gas drilling.
Bank of Toronto
Built in 1905, the bank of Toronto is one of the most beautiful abandoned buildings in the entire city. Unfortunately, it's also one of the most dangerous.
Uranium City
Uranium City was a bustling mining town until 1982 with well over 5,000 residents and over 52 mines in operation. On June 30th, 1982 most of the towns residents moved from the area with the closure of the town's main mine, leaving the small settlement abandoned.
Canada has so many unique and interesting historical abandoned locations, it's an urban explorer's dream come true, so don't discount it the next time you're thinking about leaving only footprints and taking only pictures. Just remember… explore at your own risk.
