Hot on the heels of the announcement that The O.C.'s Ben McKenzie would play rookie cop Jim Gordon, Fox's pre-Batman series Gotham has cast four more roles, including (from left to right) Erin Richards as Gordon's fiancée, Sean Pertwee as Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred, Zabryna Guevara as Gordon's boss at the GCPD and Robin Taylor as the Penguin.
Here's the official character descriptions from Warner Bros.:
• Barbara Kean: "A sophisticated ER doctor, who is engaged to marry Gordon. She's joyful but with an edge of vulnerability who stands by her future husband … which can be difficult in a world as corrupt as Gotham."
• Alfred: "A tough-as-nails ex-Marine from East London, who has loyally served the Wayne family. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he is fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne."
• Captain Essen is "[R]ookie Gordon's boss at the Gotham City Police Department Homicide Squad, who balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that is as much corporate litigator as cop."
• The Penguin "is described as having the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal who is a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor."
I still have no idea how to feel about this. The Hollywood Reporter has a pretty discomforting quote from Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly: "We will follow Bruce Wayne right up until the point where he gets interesting."
...ahem. So the plan is to make a show about Bruce Wayne's uninteresting years, and then when he finally does get interesting, stop? Great.
