Mike Parker ist gestorben. Er war als Chef der Mergenthaler Linotype Company Ende der Fünfziger für den Aufbau der Linotype Type Library verantwortlich, die im Laufe der Zeit zum Industriestandard für Schriftsatz wurde und bis heute die wahrscheinlich umfangreichste Sammlung hochwertiger Schriften ist. Die neueste Version davon ist die Linotype Gold Edition mit über 7000 Schriften für knapp 10.000 Euro.
Als Parker die Linotype Type Library erfand, fügte er ihr neben Schriften von Adrian Frutiger (Frutiger, Univers – letztere ist die Schrift aus dem Star Wars-Crawl) oder Hermann Zapf (Optima, Palatino) auch die Neue Haas Grotesk aus der Haas’schen Schriftgiesserei.
Die Neue Haas Grotesk war allerdings nie für den industriellen Fertigungsprozess von Linotype vorgesehen und so baute Arthur Ritzel von der Stempel Schriftgießerei unter Aufsicht von Mike Parker die Haas Grotesk in eine Schriftfamilie mit sehr viel mehr Schriftschnitten (bold, italic, etc) um, die der neuen Linotype Type Library zugeführt werden konnte. Und deren neuer Name war: Helvetica. Rest is History. R.I.P. Mike.
Mike Parker–a legendary typographer, type designer, and historian who is perhaps best known for his work giving the world Helvetica–died Sunday night. He was 85.
A consultant, type historian, and designer at Font Bureau, Parker has been described as “the font god,” with the development of more than 1,100 typefaces to his credit. His colleagues called him a shepherd of typography, who over the course of 50 years, helped guide the type landscape from hot metal, to photocomposition, and finally to digital printing.
To most people, though, Parker will be best known as the godfather of Helvetica. Parker did not invent Helvetica, but he’s perhaps more responsible than any other person for the font’s success.
