If there was a winner for the best movie trailer that aired during last night's Super Bowl, it would be the new Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer, hands down. It was packed with new shots, new faces and new info — as you can see in our immense screencap breakdown below!
The Winter Soldier's robotic hands looks great. In the comics, The Winter Soldier is created by the U.S.S.R. for use in the Cold War, which is why there's a red star on his arm (you can see it clearly in the very last picture). Since HYDRA scientist Arnim Zola will be making an appearance in the film, I'm guessing he helps the Russians make the Soldier in some way.
The Winter Soldier gets a mental tune-up, indicating he's likely at least partially programmed to serve whoever his masters are. By the way, that guy on the left? That's Ed Brubaker, the writer whose Captain America run include the original Winter Soldier storyline, which this movie is mostly based on (and is a damn fine read all on its own).
The S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ foyer! I don't expect the sculpture to make it out of the movie intact, do you?
New S.H.I.E.L.D. executive officer Alexander Pierce strikes an ominous pose.
The Winter Soldier did not get his conceal-and-carry permit, apparently.
How to stop a car the Winter Soldier way: 1) Blow up car.
2) Step very slightly out of car's trajectory.
3) Walk like a badass toward smoldering car.
4) Receive dirty look from Samuel L. Jackson.
Nick Fury needs medical attention after his encounter with the Soldier. On the plus side, I bet the health care at S.H.I.E.L.D. is pretty good.
It's weird that Robert Redford's good looks and amiable charm have almost entirely defined his long career, allowing him to play some of the most likable, sympathetic protagonists in movie history, but he just looks so evil here.
A good look at Cap's new uniform, inspired by his recent S.H.I.E.L.D. agent uniform in the comics.
The Winter Soldier brings along henchmen for tasks more difficult that blowing up the car of the director of the most powerful defense organization in the Marvel universe.
"Aim for the knees, you idiots!"
Is that a U.F.O.? No, it's just Cap wanting to play a game of catch!
The Winter Soldier happily obliges!
Okay, maybe not so happily. This is the best close-up of the character's face we've seen, and either the man really enjoys his eyeshadow, or there is something quite wrong with him.
Cap recruits Sam Wilson (played by Anthony Mackie), who becomes the Falcon. Looks like they're at a cemetery, doesn't it? A tombstone would explain why Cap has his eyes lowered...
The Falcon's wings getting ready for take-off! Great design.
Screenshots don't really do the Falcon's flying justice, so make sure you watch the trailer again if you want to see how awesome it is.
S.H.I.E.L.D.'s helicarrier parking lot!
Sorry, this scene was too fantastic not to add. See that tiny dot just right of the center of the pic? That's Cap on a motorcycle, about to face off with a heavily-armed, Harrier-like jet.
Cap ain't care. That U.F.O. on the left? That's his shield, and Cap has invited the jet to play catch.
The jet is not as good at catch as the Winter Soldier is.
A human-proportioned Black Widow swings into action.
The Winter Soldier is shown without his mask, but the trailer still hides his lower face. Oh, that thing he's holding? It's his "Bring down the Falcon" device.
Works pretty well.
...which the Falcon does not appreciate.
The awesome elevator fight shown more completely in the last trailer. We're looking at mostly guys in suits, so they're most likely government officials, Since Cap is in his uniform, I think we can safely assume they're S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and ordered to take down Cap (the poor dopes), because clearly Cap and S.H.I.E.L.D. are going to have a major falling-out. In fact, I'd bet the Harrier-jet above was also sent by S.H.I.E.L.D. (Wacky bonus caption: Don't you wish you used Dial?)
Nick Fury survives the Winter Soldier's attack, but is definitely worse for wear.
So awesome.
That's... that's not good. Given the building's reasonably futuristic design, the helicopter landing pad and how similar the landscape looks compared to the helicarrier screencap above, I'm guessing this is probably a S.H.I.E.L.D. building. Given that there might be a schism inside S.H.I.E.L.D. itself in the movie, this is a pretty good way to encapsulate that. (Bonus wacky caption: This is why you never try to parallel-park a helicarrier.)
Captain America and the Winter Soldier face off on a helicarrier; if the Winter Soldier is responsible for downing it, as per the pic above, then clearly he gets the best of Cap here.
Someone has died, and someone important enough that Black Widow and Cap have paid their respects. Since it would be weird to kill Fury after having him survive the Winter Soldier's attack on his car, I'm guessing it's someone else. But who? Maybe Maria Hill? Man, I hope not. (If only so we keep getting Cobie Smulders in Marvel movie gag reels.)
Just Black Widow being Black Widow.
That is totally the Falcon catching Captain America. Did the Winter Soldier chuck him off the helicarrier?
Holy hell, is that three helicarriers that have been destroyed?!
Yikes.
The end. Until Captain America: The Winter Soldier debuts on April 4th, at least.
