Climatologists over at NOAA have mapped out the weather patterns hitting the host cities during the Winter Olympics since their beginning — and, big surprise, the Winter Olympics are heating up, with Sochi among the warmest of the last century. Here it is in more detail:
The global rise in temperature could mean that the Winter Olympics of the future might look different from the Winter Olympics of today — NOAA points, for example, to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics — where organizers had to ship in snow via helicopter to hold the skiing and snowboarding competitions.
Researchers over at the University of Waterloo made this chart of which former Olympic host sites could conceivably still maintain the requisite snow and ice needed for the events under both current temperatures and under future projections, which suggests that the games of the future might be moving considerably North.
